swanstone vs swan veritek?

Hi all,

We are installing a Kohler enameld cast iron shower base in one new shower. The second shower's measurements fit the Swanstone/Veritek shower base.

Has anyone had any experience with either Swanstone or their less expensive product, Veritek? All I could find out is Swanstone comes in more colors, but there must be more than that.

We have the Swanstone solid surface; it is very durable, easy to clean, and similar to Corian.

The Veritek we saw looked more like the old acrylic/fiberglass shower walls - it was much thinner.

I've had the Swanstone solid installed for 8 years...it looks great. It does require just a little more than a light scrub, though, to clean the base. The recessed areas between the non-slip 'bubbles' are harder to clean than the Veritek surface, though.

My daughter has the Veritek because it was the only way she could get the size to replace a bathtub with the drain at one end, but it does look more like acrylic. But her 'bubbles' seem to be rounder which makes the surface easier to clean.

Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Good luck with your project.

lil geek, If you want a tiled pan and you want to do it DIY, look into the Kerdi System by Schluter. Schluter makes a pre-sloped pan base, which is of excellent quality, and it's very easy to install. The pan and walls are then covered with Kerdi membrane, then the tile is thinsetted to the Kerdi. A Kerdi shower is well within the realm of DIY, the quality, in terms of water-tightness, and avoidance of future water saturation problems, is second-to-none. With the Kerdi membrane being just beneath the tile, there is no deep wetting of the substructure of the tile. There are installation picsutes available here, and if you look in the right column on the webisite page there are installation videos as well. Do not confuse or compare Schluter's pre-formed shower pan with other premade trays that people on this forum are gripping about. Unsupported, thin flimsy trays are a failure waiting to happen. The Kerdi line is nothing like that. Just another idea...but only consider doing this DIY if you can follow simple instructions, if you have basic skills, and you have enough intelligence to be smart enough to map out the steps to success before you start mixing thinset. The ability to think through a project ahead of time, step-by-step, from start to finish, before starting seems to be a rare skill these days. It seems I learned the difference too late. Our local home improvement store made it sound great. It looked good and was easy to install. The product just doesn't cut it. Remember, this is my SECOND Veritek tub. The first one cracked during install. I blamed that on the contractor. Now I am not sure.

NyefNyef By "called Blanco", I meant I telephoned Blanco's US HQ and asked them to find me their sink within a 200 mile radius of my home. They pointed me to their regional sales teams, who could not locate it readily available, or in their nat'l warehouse. They said most of the time, nobody really stocks them and they're all custom ordered. No matter. Amazon & FedEx came thru. cal Ditto! I'd love to FedEx them too. breezyThanks for answering my original question. My suspicion was that they weren't as good, just based on how often I see Blanco mentioned and never hear the other makers. And compared to what we've spent already on things, you're right that $100 is a small price to get exactly what we wanted exactly when we need it.

I believe Veritek IS acrylic. It is a cheaper product than Swanstone solid surface.

You cannot compare the two. Swanstone solid surface is a Corian competitor. Veritek is one step above the cheapo fiberglass units sold in big box stores. It's a little nicer, but not by much. My relatives use Veritek in their rental remodels.

You should also go to cultured marble stores and get quotes. Their 'cultured granite' is similar in look to Corian/Swanstone - a little glossier in finish, but most people can't tell. We own both - Swanstone kitchen counters and bathroom integrated sink vanity, and cultured granite for shower surround on one tub and a complete neo-angle shower (walls and pan).

For a bathroom, the cultured granite has been as easy to maintain and as good looking as the Swanstone. Our bathrooms/kitchen were remodeled in 2003 and we are very pleased with both products.

We saved enough on using the cultured granite to pay for several custom touches that made a HUGE difference: edge molding and extra storage units. Install is included in the price of cultured marble/granite, which tipped the scale for us.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. We went with the Swanstone. The Veritek did sound rather inexpensive so, in this case, you get what you pay for? We'll see next week when it arrives.

To clarify, both Swanstone and Veritek are made from the same process. It is a compression molded solid surface. The difference is the material used and how much of it is used. Swanstone is typically a thicker surface and comes in a wide variety of unique colors using various particulates and fillers where Veritek only come in white, bisque and bone. Both offer similar performance and characteristics far superior to its competitors.
