To tile all the way or paint?
Comments (14)I like more tile and less paint, UNLESS it's a bathroom where you will be taking care of little kids (eg. bathing, supervising toothbrushing, etc.). Little kids can be LOUD, and in an acoustically hard room (all tile), all that loud bouncing back and forth on all that tile can really make your ears ring. You can offset this by having more soft materials: shower curtain instead of tub enclosure door, curtains on windows, lots of towel racks with towels hanging on them, throw rugs on floor; you get the picture. Bathroom I will use alone: lots of tile, glass door, sleek surfaces. Bathroom with kids: design with acoustics in mind. Oh, and it doesn't get quieter as they get older. Two teenage sisters getting ready at the same time and randomly arguing is louder than two "terrible" (not so terrible, I now know) twos playing in the tub. We're going to have a bath for every person in this house when I'm done with it! That, or we're going back to an outhouse by the lilac in the corner of the backyard, and a pitcher and bowl in every bedroom. Anything for a little peace and quiet!...See MoreIf you don't tile the shower all the way to the ceiling...
Comments (7)In a previous bathroom reno, I tiled the whole room to the ceiling. I didn't wash many monkeys in there, but I loved having the tiles. I'm currently doing a small bathroom reno and have a low ceiling and about a foot above the shower stall, and I'm going to tile the lot - and I'm considering tiling the ceiling just above the shower. I think it's worth considering going as far as possible. I don't know if it will make an uneven ceiling better, leaving the gap or not, I'd go as high as possible, personally....See MoreTile all the way up? Or casing/paint on garden window?
Comments (14)dianalo, Thanks for that vote of confidence. Soapstone is the counter. Paint or wood worries me, as this will be used for a functional herb garden. In the NE in the winter, good, fresh herbs are hard to come by, that's not ridiculously expensive. We don't know how paint or stain will hold up with the watering. remodelfla, no wood frame as yet. Just bare bones from the install. But we can do that option. ellendi, the BS will be subway, but since it is back ordered we can do whatever⦠up the sides. By halfway are you meaning to the bottom of the cabs, and painting the sides of the window and up and over? Thanks for clarifying. We can cut the pieces but that said, you may be right that it might not look good. Thanks, abbeys. I'll run all this by the GC tomorrow. I do think the wood trim would offset it nicely as well....See MoreTile all the way to the ceiling: yay or nay?
Comments (16)Counters are beech butcher block, waterloxed but no stain. I also thought all the way to the ceiling. It's so close anyway, seems silly to stop just shy. Contractor already said he would take the hood down so I can put up tile if I wanted it to go all the way up. God bless him, he knows my decision making abilities are impaired at this point in the project. I have tile samples on the way of all the above plus a few I didn't save pictures of. Will post back with actual images in situ once they arrive. Back to the sawdust......See More- 14 years ago
