Home entry, garage and driveway placement

I was curious about virgilcarter's remark on another thread that "By any measure, having a driveway as one's 'front door' for all guests, as shown in this plan, is not the best of design solutions."

virgilcarter, would you be willing to explain a bit more? Is it just that you think driveways can be ugly? Other negatives? Do others agree?

I'd really like to hear your opinions. We are planning to have a driveway forecourt entry, our garage is detached. We will have landscaping between the house and forecourt/garage and in the front yard opposite the garage. We will have a permeable paver driveway (it's not very long) in hopes of improving appearance and being kind to the trees. We had a choice to site the garage in back of the house, but we're one of those funny families that likes to use the front door when we come home! Our new house is just on paper so there's still time to change our minds . . .
