Structured wiring

What are reasonable cost estimates to install structured wiring in a new construction? here are the particulars:

- location is suburb of NYC

- house has 4 finished levels (including basement)

- total finished living area is about 9000 sq ft

- desired wirigin includes: coax, phone, cat6 in most rooms and common areas:

Maybe someone here or on the electrical forum can give you a ballpark but your best bet is to get real world estimates from reputable contractors in your area who can see your project up close and personal.

I would just like to be the supplier for a 9k s.f. home...That's a lot of wire!

I have 1 estimate already, and am planning on getting 2 more. The first estimate came in around 20k. However, on the internet, I am seeing a $1/sq foot rule of thumb. Am wondering if the rule of thumb is wrong or my estimate is high.

We chose a couple locations in each room for ports (usually across the room from each other, to hedge bets). To each port, we ran 2 1/2 inch pvc pipe runs from the basement, as channels through which wires or future cables could be run or changed out. Each port on the wall ends in a faceplate with multiple connectors, so each pipe run can serve multiple wires, up to the number of plate connectors. So for example, our plates serve ethernet, phone, etc. each plate. Color coding is key here!!! Everything terminates (or originates) in the basement in central panel control for internet, phone, power, etc. Each has a central hub. We also ran channels from the basement up to the attic, in case we wanted to run something up to there then distribute it down to a room below the attic. You would have to consult code/fire code to see how this might work for you. Depends on your location, code, etc. The key is to pick your potential port locations well, and to put in the channels so that you have future flexibility, as technology changes so fast nowadays. And use wide curves in your piping if curves needed, so you can drive through your runs with a fish wire later without it getting hung up on corners in the pipe. Sounds like a pretty typical inspection report for a home built in 1930. Seems to me that this wanna be buyer doesn't have a clue about old homes and thinks they are being cute by posting this report. For a price in the ballpark of 150,000-165,000, I'd think this is a very fine house!

I have a similar, but more expanded situation as I have almost all of the downstairs walls down to the studs. I decided to install a Structured Media Center (SMC) in the laundry room wall and will be running CAT5 for phone and CAT6 for Internet, along with HDTV quality CATV. It will eventually go to virtually every room in the house. The SMC will connect to the crawl space via a 1-1/2 inch gray PVC conduit. It will also connect to the attic via another conduit. I plan to install low voltage (orange) outlets at all ground floor locations and then run orange LV spiral conduit from each down through the bottom wall plate into the crawl space. This way I can pull whatever cables I need after the walls are closed. I'll do something similar for the upstairs after I decide on the layout. This is not for everyone but I decided to do it while I could in an attempt to future-proof the house. The hardest part is deciding on the locations, which takes some thought. Good luck

Cost of structural/low voltage wiring. Is this OK or too much?

that is a reasonable price IF it includes the wire. if it does not, then buy the materials and do it yourself. since the walls are open this won't be that big a deal to run. do not wait until the sheetrock goes up or the price will likely triple.

The only pricing I've seen for Coax, Cat5e and Speaker is based on how many drops, not sq ft.

In Charlotte, around $50-$100 per drop (speaker counts as 2 for stereo, 5+ for surround).

The security pricing I've seen started with a base package (not enough sensors for a condo) and then added on from there for glass breaks, motion and contacts. Most were $50 per plus $15 for the rough in wiring.

I'm assuming that up north, the prices will be higher, but I don't know why the cost structure would be different.

With that size house and four levels, I hope you're planning on doing home-run electrical wiring in addition to structured wiring. Our house is a mere 7K SF and two levels of living space. Can't tell you how much we've appreciated having an "All Off" light switch next to the bed!

Our house is 5500+ sf. I feel we got around the mid level of sructured wiring with 5 rooms of music, a kick azz surround sound for the Great Room, some outdoor living space (deck, pool area, screened porch wired) done, a few components, whole house for cable, satellite, internet, phone, upgraded speakers, security, blah, blah, blah.

Total is around $12,000, so $20 sounds OK to me. (We are in the South, so I imagine prices might be a bit lower here.)
