Are you all eating 'Sweet Corn' yet?

Today we had our first "sweet corn"...no t'scape, sorry! But I think I'll try to work in one this coming week...nothin' like sweet corn & fresh tomatoes...& a cucumber salad besides! Keep checking this thread this week! (since I'm not keeping up with the gardens & weather is uncooperative, it's time to t'scape!) LOL! Jeanne S.

Never had luck with sweet corn in our garden :(
but so far, I've been enjoying yellow squash, peppers and cucumbers! Been trying to keep up with the watering, with all this heat. It's amazing how the weeds are 'florishing'
'Big Time', and you don't even have to 'tend' to them! They're actually taking over everything...grrrrr

I think you've got the right idea..time for some tablescaping... lol

The local roadside stand has a big sign up "Homegrown Sweet Corn"... that means it was grown in PA and shipped here. lol! We'll buy it when it says "Local Homegrown...". lol!

yup, there's nothing better than fresh homegrown tomatoes (tomato sandwich or BLT) with good sweet corn, fresh cukes, etc. sigh. It will be awhile here yet, but I am harvesting my summer squashes, and the first of the cukes and extra-early cherry tomatoes. I have some peppers that should be harvested too. It won't be long now.... :)

When I was cleaning one of my perennial flower beds this past autumn I fould a piece of red indian corn that the squirrels had left me. For kicks, I planted a small block in my veg garden this year. It's mostly 4-5' tall now and the tops are doing their 'thing' (whatever that is), but I don't see any ears forming yet. If I don't get ornamental corn from it, I'll at least have some cornstalks for decorating. :O) It's growing great, so I wish I had tried regular sweet corn now!

I tried True Gold, and I thought it had a good flavor--sweet and sort of buttery tasting. Of course, it wasn't as sweet as some of the xtra sweet hybrids, but my family enjoyed it. I tried to save seeds, but the deer got to them before I did!

Only certain varieties of sweet corn will have their flavor affected by a nearby field corn planting. These are the ones labeled "super-sweet," "sugar-enhanced," etc. That's why some of the advice above is incorrect -- though it would be true for "ordinary" vegetables (and non-enhanced varieties of sweet corn, for that matter). You could try timing your planting to avoid cross-pollination, but I wouldn't rely on starting indoors; direct-sown corn catches up quickly to transplanted. Or simply plant a variety of sweet corn that doesn't become starchy if cross-pollinated. Some people prefer these; their disadvantage is that the corn must be eaten very quickly after harvest, while the enhanced varieties can keep their sugar for days. Actually it depends on the variety of corn, some of the newer sweet corn will hold it's sweetness for a few days, providing it is cooled. Out on the counter is not the place. When you remove the husk, you will loose moisture, the husk helps to keep that moisture in. Same thing with the shanks, which most grocery stores never see. The older varieties of corn, you needed the water boiling before you picked for the perfect corn taste.

I've just begun reading that book. I never got a chance to start earlier in the year but finally broke down and made time a week or so ago. (I usually save most of my reading for late fall/winter when I'm not up to my eyeballs in chores.) I'm only a third of the way through the book but am love, love, loving it! If only I could keep my eyes open longer while reading in bed, I'd be further along. I can't wait to read her take on flour corn. Thanks for the link to her site. I didn't realize she had one (or I did and forgot). So, George, have you experimented any with flour corns yet? I'd love to hear your take on it. I remember you mentioning wanting to try parching. Yes! Last weekend was the first time I got some at our local stand. It was SOOOOOOO good. We've had it twice since then.

Ours is on it's way out :^( It has really been good though!
Tonight we will have the last of the corn, some fried okra and some sliced cukes and tomatos....yum!

No luck growing corn here either, slinkey! Farmer's Market purchase! Yup, got 'Big Time' weeds here, too!...can't keep up...but today got out for a total of 3 hrs (a bit at a time)...humid & hot...but cooler this morning & cloudy...& got gently rained on! (but that felt good thru the sweat!)

bonnie & jaybird...yum! yum! & party...looks like you'll be having some soon! But the BEST grows in Iowa...just ask any farmer! LOL!

So, no t'scaping today! (but soon to come :-) LOL! Anyway, ere's how my Door Arbor Vignette looked today (yah, you can still pick out a few weeds!) LOL! Jeanne S.

Wow! I LOVE your door arbor!!! Did you make it?! (now wishing I had kept the old doors from my house)

BTW: corn might be best when grown in Iowa, but it's not nearly as good by the time it reaches NY! lol!
