My family is fine, OT

If you heard about the shootings in Aurora, CO, my family is all OK.

My heart goes out to the families affected by this tragedy.

I am at a loss to understand how anyone could commit such a horrific act!

I come over here some,glad you are OK! This is all that was on news all day. Those poor families, the man carrying around pic of his son was so sad. I think they are finally getting the dead out .But now they think he may have rigged the college so that could be problem & the room he had I don't think they have even gone in. Unfortunately he was a very smart guy & there is way too much junk on Internet but I guess he came back to Ca. to ask about different things not sure if it was about guns or explosives but shop owner saw his pic & said Oh,no! Even if he had reported it the guy kept clean until now. His mom is psychic nurse. She said right away "they have the right guy" so she must have noticed that something was wrong with him. I met 1 of girls that survived Columbine & she still had nightmares said she didn't think it would ever go away. i don't go to movies but my GK'S would go to a midnight thing,as they have before. Hope no one you know is injured either. Jan

Glad your family is all fine. I've followed the news, tho not sure why as its so horrific and depressing. I can never understand how some people can be so EVIL. The magnitude of his actions are beyond comprehending.

You can't change anyone's behavior except your own. So wishing that the joint gifts would stop or that they will stop chastising you if you don't chip in isn't going to get you anywhere. You can either continue to contribute to group gifts in order to keep the peace and get over your feelings about it, OR you can quit contributing and just deal with (ignore if possible) the scolding from MIL. IDEA: What if you just chip in a nominal amount to their gift $5 or $10, quit giving $60 because you know it won't be matched. Then you can always buy a separate gift for the recipient, spending what you consider to be an appropriate amount. As for the birthday gifts, who ever said that you HAVE to buy someone a gift, and that it has to be something on their $100 list? Buy IF and WHAT you want and leave it at that. You're letting them bully you into buying them expensive gifts. They probably will still bully you but whether you let them is up to you. You're worried about not ruining the relationship and I can really sympathize with that. But what I've learned is that your in-laws are going to behave the way they want to no matter what. In my first marriage, no matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried, MIL just didn't like me. And believe me, I tried! What a wasted effort. Second marriage, I'm just myself and nothing more, and unfortunaely inlaws & I have had a couple of unavoidable run-ins due to circumstances beyond our control. However, they still love me and treat me with respect (and vice versa). Bottom line, you need to live your own life, do what's best for you (just as they are apparently doing!!) and quit acquiescing to their expectations. It's fine to give in on some things, especially the things that are not important to you, but things that go against your grain like this apparently does, stand your ground and do what works for you.

Thank you all for the kind words--I'm beaming ear-to-ear! I've been digging through boxes and boxes of files and paperwork looking for specific information. I'll post that Wednesday. Meanwhile, here are some answers I can give without referencing anything: The fireplace is full masonry. The stones you see are 6 inch thick granite; the hearthstone is also a granite slab. The stones were ordered split faced. There is definitely mortar holding the stones, but it is recessed about 1 inch giving the fireplace a dry-stacked look. You can also see that the stones are quite close together, further emphasizing the dry-stack look. Overall dimensions are 9 ft high by 7 ft wide with a 1 ft high hearth. The opening is 40 in wide by 38 in high and shallow, like a Rumford fireplace. It sits in a 3 ft deep bump-out and is surrounded by casement windows. As soon as I take updated pictures of my kitchen and breakfast room, I will finally post them in the finished kitchens blog. Tonight is crazy here, but I'll definitely try to answer more questions tomorrow.

True, but it's not exactly a happy book Gosh, I never knew that was a requisite for greatness. Trying hard to think of other essential novels in the top echelon in American Literature that are happy, but coming up short, I'm afraid. It's also an important record of several interesting events in history -- the all-black town of Eatonville, where people of color could live their lives pretty much without white interference to the extent that was possible in the US In the early 1900s, the hurricane of 1928, still the second worst storm in US history for the number of people it killed, etc. I frequently pass by one of the mass grave markers where they think about 1500 people are buried. As far as the book goes, I will say that the way she notates dialect/accent is somewhat irksome at first, but you get used to it after a chapter or so.

Candy, so glad to hear that you and yours are all ok. Like everybody else in our little group of super sensitive, caring people on GW,I am just unable to wrap my mind around all this senseless tragedy.My dear GF who died in 1955 always told us we needed to stay busy, that a empty mind and idle hands were the devil's workshop and and if you didn't have something constructive to do you would find something destructive.I.m sure thankful that I learned from him that digging in the garden with a hoe was a supper good way to distress, otherwise with all the stress that I"ve had I might well have been mass muderer/ Praying for all the families and friends who were touched by this monster.
