Instant Hot Running Slow

My instant hot dispenser has been running slow and tonight almost not at all -- but we are filling a swimming pool tonight. I'm just wondering about the last few days. It is in the 90s during the day here and I'm sure water use is up. Is it likely a water pressure in the area thing or is it possible the thing is going out on me?

typically that sounds like a pressure problem , but you could also have scale building up in that tank which would hinder flow also.

What's your water quality like and do you have a filter before the hot tank?

It did improve after we turned off the pool water -- it just didn't happen as quickly as I thought it would. Our water quality is pretty good. In fact, they have to add calcium to bring the harness up for pools here. I know this sounds terrible, but I need to double check on the filter. Not only have I slept since we installed it, I've been living in melodrama central since then. Some of the things you don't have to worry about you become less certain about when you are worrying about so many other things. I will double check. If so, it is probably due for replacement and reminding me in its own way. If not, is there a way to clean the unit? Do you just have to replace and get a filter put in place for next time?

Kinetico RO.....Highly recommend the K5W unit....the one with the "water-on-water" storage tank, which I believe is Kinetico exclusive. Much superior to their own or anyone else's air-bladder tanks. Uses line water-pressure for delivery so no drop-off in flow rate from full to empty. Also refills with zero back-pressure so replenishment is much faster and with much less wasted water. I've had two of them at different locations for more than a year. 2.7 gallons capacity. Flows about 1.2 gallons per minute at my 65psi line pressure. Refills from empty in under an hour. Far superior to previous (or current) air-bladder tank. Worth every penny of the extra in terms of convenience IMHO. (Had previous Kinetico RO units for 18 years with zero problems. Responded to their exchange-discount offer.) Kinetico is high-end supplier but they absolutely do hold up their end of the bargain in my experience. They did everything. I did nothing.

Can instant hot/filtered tap be hooked to regular cold water?

thank you, would the adapters reduce the house plumbing flow rate so that is not an issue? From my college fluid dynamics, seems that a smaller diameter makes for a faster flow rate with the same head pressure . Has anyone done this? Worried about leaks in the faucet or worse in the tubes between the tubing/adapter setup down the road.

I don't know the history of IHW on walls. There may have once been problems. First, about wallmounted regular faucets. Old-style wallmounts are available from Chicago Faucets and others. Nothing modern looking. Almost nothing with a single-handle mixer valve. Wallmounts in general are out of favor in the US and Canada. I see them in Australian web sites. And in web sites in foreign languages. Millions of thermostatic valves are installed in showers, in the wall, but not much is available in kitchen faucets. There are more bathroom faucets available as wallmounts. I suspect (I have no proof) that manufacturers tired of the panic support phone calls they used to get from people trying to install wallmounts. They require more fussing and finetuning. Then, there is the risk when the faucet has a moveable spout, as in kitchen faucets. It pivots left and right. Some people will yank it around roughly and ultimately someone will sue because his installation leaked behind the wall and he got sick from invisible mold, and it's the fault of the faucet not his misuse of the faucet. At the very least you can be sure that there will be a lot more hassle phone calls coming in over the years. Now, with an IHW you have a heat resistant tube that needs to be shielded and it's just so much easier if this is deckmounted and the tube goes from the tank to the spout through an approved installation hole in the counter. With wall-mount you have no way to know whether or not each specific install is done right or not. And you have to show to approval-granting certification companies that you have an approved way of installing it and that this is not prone to jerryrigging. (Impossible.) Bracing wallmounts inside studs is another never-ending topic. Why take on all this responsibility, support and hassle? Who needs the hassle? Wallmounts are going to cause problems (worries) that go on forever. You get the picture. Just sell deckmount faucets like everyone else. -- i get the impression that you don't know yet about the flexible heat-resistant tubing inside the IHW spout. This tubing is available for purchase. Hint hint.

Brickeye, thanks for the bump. I spoke to a customer service rep at Chicago Faucets today and she indicated that I can customize a faucet to withstand water temperatures as hot as 200 degrees Farenheit. The hot water flow will be limited by the output of the instant hot so not very much but the water itself will be very hot and be mixable with regular cold water as well. Here is the advice she gave. Does this seem reasonable to attempt? Need to get a separate body, change the washer to a steam washer and get a separate front with shut off valve 540-LDDJ18CP Faucet 1-421JKNF Steam washer that can stand the heat E31JKCP front with shut off lever in the front.

cleaning those units isn't practical. The filter would just prevent water from scaling up the interior tank and element. If your water is good or filtered already, then it's not really necessary unless you want to modify the taste.

You should know if there is a filter easy, is there a round filter unit under the sink next to the heater tank? If you have a whole house filter you'd know too because the take up a good bit of space and are fairly expensive.

We do not have a whole house filter. But that wasn't the problem anyway -- which became apparent when I went to make iced tea and heard tinkling water. Opened the cabinet and started pulling stuff out. I could feel the warm and wet on the cabinet door as I did and saw the puddle as soon as I pulled out the recycling bin. I tested it and found there was a hole int he line running from the tank to the spout. Everything has been wiped up and is getting good and dry before I put it back. Doesn't look like any damage has been done. We can repair this -- the line had enough slack in it to cut it off and refit it, but I think I'm going to look into a collar or a different kind of line to avoid a repeat. At least I know what to to check right away if it happens again.
