Could you place it under some kind of cabinetry; it would look like a desk area and place it underneath? We had to put our litter box in the laundry room also but at least we can use a covered box. There really isn't a "pretty" way to locate a litter box :( One more thing, I put the box in the corner of the room that is to the left of the door so that when you swing open the door it "hides" the box. It's not perfect but we didn't want to do the garage thing or a cabinet either!

In our laundry room we omitted the 2 extra lower cabinets next to the sink cabinets, but extended the laminate countertop all the way to the wall, approx 6 feet. We put the litter box under that. Plenty of room for litterbox and mat, plus water/food bowls!

Part of the counter in our laundry room is a built in "desk." The big drawer underneath desk-height countertop is useful, the top is perfect for cats' food and water dishes as they can easily jump, the alcove underneath is great for tucking away litterbox but still large enough they don't feel confined. I had them line the back and one side with same tile as floor for easily cleaning (the other side is wood because it's part of the cabinets. To keep the dogs out of the laundry room, we permanently installed a metal gate across the doorway with one bar cut out to allow kitty passage. Not a perfectly aesthetic solution, but the best I've come up with so far in three houses that solves all those pieces. Oh, and one of the best things we did was put an exhaust fan in the laundry room, with a timer on the wall so we can set it to run a few minutes every hour!

Good topic! Does anyone else have a super messy cat? Our litter box is currently in our unfinished basement and I haven't even stressed about that for our new house yet, but I'm adding these suggestions to my list. My cat flicks litter all over. It's so bad that at our previous house, I put a pet door into the basement. Our basement door is at the bottom of the stairs in our current house, so I can leave it open.

If there is a door to the laundry room you can install a pet door just large enough for the cat.

Depending on the size of the dog this can block access.

We have a pet door in the basement door and the litter box is in the basement.

It has a small opening and a cover over it to prevent litter 'spills.'

My parents are having a special lower cabinet built to house the litter box, in an attempt to keep the litter confined a bit more and not all over the laundry room. It will have a cat-sized opening (still working on what form it will take with their cabinet maker). Inside is an outlet to plug in a night light and an air filter.

@rushmom- YES! We have a Siamese cat that is really stupid. I'm not exaggerating, either- she falls off the back of the couch when she's walking on it! LOL Anyway, yes, she is super messy as well. We have an enclosed litter box with one of those "litter catcher" mats in front and a large carpet remnant underneath it, and she JUMPS out of the litter over all that. And then flicks her paws to get rid of what didn't fly off her paws during the jump! So frustrating.....

@hedgehoggy- Can you enclose the area, but put an outlet in there so that you can plug in a nightlight? But honestly, cats can see in the dark, so I think your kitty would be okay even without it. (Our normal cat doesn't seem to have any issues, anyway.) Our litter box is in the laundry room in a small closet that we placed under the stairs. We put a kitty door on the closet door so that the smell and mess is pretty well contained.

We have enough room in our laundry room behind the door to put the litter box. It works for us.

They can see in dim light, but not in total darkness.

I saw a photo where the cabinet doors had a cat shape cut-out of the doors and it was quite small, so clearly only big enough for a cat and not a dog. It was so cute! Each side of the double doors had half a cat and together when closed, it was a whole cat shape. The litterbox was inside this cab.

This might be a totally out of the box suggestion, but I thought I'd put it out there, since the "laundry room" is the perfect location for this. We have a Cat Genie, with a cover, in our laundry room. Cats love it (it's always clean), we love it (we don't have to clean/empty it - except for twice a year maintenance), and guests are amazed by it :)

We've had ours for 2-2.5 years and can't imagine how we went without one LOL.

We have a "cat room." It's a small doorless walk-in closet in the basement. The litter box lives there along with our cat supplies (litter, carriers, etc). It is located so that we don't have to walk past it to get to most of the other basement rooms The cats seem to appreciate the privacy.

There is a night light. My wife's idea.
