why did big mirrors become dated?
Comments (38)Flyleft--Years ago I had a wonderful brownstone which we rehabbed. My first experience. We had a good architect who planned the whole thing and I didn't ask too many questions. I basically picked the bathtub I wanted, with a skylight over it hehehe, and focused on the kitchen. When the bathroom vanity went in the sinks were so small I spent the next 8 years hating those sinks. Also, they were low and undermounted. Since then I have a special bug about bathroom sinks -- they need to be big enough and high enough to be comfortable. I was very careful when we did our reno this last time. For me, the important part is the bowl size, followed by the deck. You'll laugh but when I googled your sink I went right to the dimensions. They are generous, the bowl is deep enough. I really do like vessel sinks. They are beautiful if they are large enough and work with the faucet well. Even the slab one could be a good idea for a his and her in a very modern bath. But whoever is designing this stuff needs to know what they are doing, which isn't always the case. And sometimes things are styled for magazines and not really functional -- then people fall in love with the look and actually install it. Oy....See MoreDated vs. dated. Condition and "discernment"
Comments (31)Of course, but the likelihood that the house on the right which is dated is pretty clearly painted within the last ten years at least, clean and not battered. I don't have pictures of my parents garage or basement, but if I did, I would have posted them. They had the garage floor mopped weekly, the furnace, water heater, and A/C while not brand-new are maintained with maintenance schedules attached and the roof is brand new. The pictures of the house on the left show a dirty basement, worn out utilities and a garage that was drywalled and never ever painted in 40 years. You can see in a number of the above pictures of the house on the right (especially if they were bigger--but it's clear in the bathroom photo). That the bathroom ceiling on the left was probably painted when the house was built and Never since. It Hasn't been my experience that Appearances are *that* deceiving that the house on the left would be pristine on all the surfaces and falling apart infrastructure-wise, and the house on the right would be worn out and dirty on the surface and the model of careful maintenance of the infrastructure. Sometimes you can be fooled, but I think that's even more likely where the surfaces were all updated and heavily staged, to make it more appealing for quick sale with quick coats of paint and "flash". So while I understand what you are saying, I don't really agree that it is Usually the case that appearances are *that deceiving....See MoreBathroom mirror vanity light swap or switch out mirror/light entirely?
Comments (2)Here is your dilemma. if you take down those fixtures there will be two holes in the mirror, that being said, they will be up high and most likely off center. So, to get new lighting that is not stuck in the corners, and covers the holes behind it, might be next to impossible unless you run a thick bar that covers the space. But some times back in the day they only drug wire over and did not put in actual junction boxes, so the bringing it to code might be another issue. 1. take one of the lights down and see what is going on 2. probably have to replace the mirror and move the electrical location....See MoreModern hanging vanities only 18-20" deep now?
Comments (2)I have to say that for me the depth of the cabinet is less important than the width since more counter is IMO better than a deeper counter . I love Godmorgon from Ikea and have used it many times for clients bit I do it with my own top and sinks . The drawer storage is awesome and I usually install to look like a wall hung but I put cleats along the back just for an added bit of support, you never see them ....See Moresas95
