Thought I should finally take out the camera and take a few picture - now that the house is almost done! I am terrible about taking photo's!

We started Mid November, and will be moving in next month! It's our 5th new home, and by far has been the least stressful, although decisions have been making my head spin! Building in SW FL, it's 3100 + sq feet, with 3 bedrooms, office, 2.5 baths with a bonus room and small craft room upstairs.

Not sure I "love" the exterior color. I wanted something 'different' then every beige house here, but I am starting to like it now that the landscaping is going in.

Thanks so much, everyone. Krista, the purplish rose is Wild Blue Yonder, which has beautiful, very large and fragrant flowers and a gangly tall undercarriage, at least for me. Oneto Home Saffron is a rose that I think Vintage got from the SJHRG. I believe Masha saw it there and took pictures. This is my first bloom and it's not very large, perhaps 3 inches, and I don't think the blooms are ever huge. The color however is so unusual, somewhat like a Lady Hillingdon bud and yet somehow richer. Christina, I believe OHS is the study name for this rose and no one knows its real name. Hard to believe this rose isn't better known and grown more. Thank you for the complements about my garden. It's coming along but of course it's still a work in progress. I think in another two years I'll be much closer to what I hope to achieve. Ingrid

I prefer the stools as in the second pix, but pull the one to the left over a bit more. Then put a floor plant in front of the left section of the bar area, to cover up the big blank space, and the two stools together won't seem odd. The little lamp is cute, but as others have said, too small for the table. Try it on your kitchen bar area, down at the right end by the wall. It will create a nice soft light for that area when you are not in the kitchen with the overheads on. Congrats on the new home!

Some crops that will grow in less than 8 hours sun are leafy and salad greens, root crops like radishes and onions, and most herbs. Peas and beans also, but will produce a smaller crop than in full sun. Consider planting the cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket so you can move it to a sunnier location if it is not doing well in the partial sun. Another crop you might consider is garlic; each clove will produce a whole new bulb. It is best planted in fall (September or October, though I've planted as late as early December with success), and will be harvested in May or June, depending on variety and your weather. It will send up some shoots that persist through winter - love seeing those! - then really take off in early spring.

Your lawn is fine. You might have an envy or patience issue, but the lawn is fine. It may have been winterized too early, too late, or not at all. I would not DO ANYTHING except mow until at least mid April. No fertilizer and no water. My grass has been growing for many weeks in the Texas Hill Country, and I have not watered it yet. I haven't even thought of watering it. In mid April look for weeds. That is the time to spot spray with Weed-b-Gon or Weed-b-Gon Chickweed, Clover, and Oxalis Killer if you need to. Don't get tempted to use weed n feed products. There are several reasons for that, but to summarize they are not the panacea they claim and they spread a lot of extra chemical you don't need. Wait until Memorial Day to fertilize if you are going to use chemicals. You can apply Milorganite in early May if you like. The reason for not fertilizing now is 1) your grass is not growing yet and the roots have to be active for fertilizer to work, and 2) if you fertilize early in the spring the grass will use up excess stored nutrients and become extremely deficient by mid May. If you wait until late May you can avoid that depletion effect. Fertilize again on Labor Day and again at Thanksgivingish. The last one should go down after the grass has stopped growing but before the winter freeze hits. That date is so flexible I can't tell you more specifically, but it's time to get ready for it in late November. For that app use a high N (low to 0 P and K) fast release fertilizer. The purpose is to push nutrients into the roots but not stimulate tender new grass growth. Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the daytime air temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall. Mulch mow at the mower's highest setting. If that height, for some reason, won't work, then lower it one notch. KBG should generally be mowed high as opposed to low. Fall is the best time by far to seed. Generally KBG never needs to be reseeded unless you want to change to a different KBG variety. Leave it alone for now and reevaluate the color and density in August. Skip the aerator. Let your neighbors do that if they want to. It could very well be that your soil has become hard all the time. Normal soil will become soft when moist and firm up again after a few days and long before it needs more water. If the soil remains hard when moist, then do this. Spray any clear shampoo at a rate of 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet. Follow that up with 1/2 to 1 inch of water to push the shampoo deeper into the soil. Shampoo will reduce the surface tension of water and allow the water to penetrate more deeply into the soil. When that happens it changes the underground environment making it more habitable for the soil microbes. The microbes will soften the soil for you. The shampoo treatment can be repeated if it does not seem considerably softer in 3 weeks. Once you have it softened, it should remain "treated" for years to come. In other words, you'll never need an aerator.

Ohhhh...I love it all! I know what you mean about exterior colors though. We were trying to find something different too and didn't quite land on it. I think yours looks fabulous though!! I love all your landscape so far! Gorgeous big trees and oh la la...love the private lake setting! When's the party??

By the way, I just got back from a trip to Northern Cal and my good friend owns a drywall business. Every million dollar house he's done recently is doing heavy finishes on the walls and I think it's beautiful.

Beautiful home! Congratulations. I was curious about the second thoughts on the old world/skip trowel finish on the drywall? It's what we are going to do on our build as well. Diggin' on that outdoor fireplace. Diggin' on it all! Nice work on your home!

kelbrad7, the stone is Dutch Quality Stone (http://www.dutchqualitystone.com/) and we used the 'Ledge stone' and the color 'Pennsylvania', I am very happy with our choice!

trudymom, thank you. The exterior paint color is Pittsburgh Paint color 'Jute', The trim color is 'Spiced Vinegar' and the shutters are 'Roman Bronze'. I really really thought I messed up big time with the paint when I first saw it. ALL the people thought the the shutter color was way too dark... but I decided to let it play out, and I am glad I did as I really think it came together, and more so after the planted all the trees.

Lindy, party!!?? YES, come on over!! Thanks for reassuring me on the heavy texture finish. I am second guessing and doubting most everything!!!

sierraeast, as I mentioned before - I second guess everything! They only charged us around $350 to do the texture - which I thought was awesome!

Beautiful home. At this point in our build I can't even imagine doing it more than once.
I love the landscaping, too. I would love to be able to have palm trees and flowering shrubs that had blooms all year but in Ohio that won't happen.

I see what you mean about the exterior. Seen 'plain' you had to wonder. But once the landscaping went in...perfect! It is SO hard to see the finished product before it's *finished*!

How's the market down there now? Did you have to beat subs off with a stick?

where in S Florida did you build? I grew up in Davie...my brother recently bought a house down there, 2 years ago almost. I advised him to wait but what does the little brother know who's been in RE for 10 years?

jesposito, we are building in Sarasota County and the market down here is TERRIBLE. Thinking back on it, it probably would have been smarter for us to rent a couple of years, but I am tired of moving and I just want a home! We left FL in 2006, built a new home in TN which 6 months past expected completion date and lived in our motor home. Soon after, I realized we made a mistake leaving FL and our entire family (whom we are all very close to) and decided to just return.

chisue, I do believe that the builder is doing great making $$ on this house as I am sure the subs are pounding at his doors. However, we have found that when we try and price things they are so hungry and haven't had any $$ coming in that they try and make it on us!

Thanks again everyone, it's nice to share and I am excited about moving in and settling in!

The exterior colors of your home are beautiful! We are also using stucco and stone on our house that we are building in Colorado. The color combination that you chose is very close to what I am trying to achieve. Currently we are trying to pick a roof shingle color. Would you mind sharing what brand and color you chose for your roof? Thanks!

alliern, I am now sure of the brand, but the color is weatherwood. I'll have to see if any packages are still there in the garage. They are a 30 year dimensional shingle - we wish we did the 40 year.

Wow. This is beautiful. I LOVE the heavy drywall finish. Wish I would have done that! :O) REally love the exterior colors, I think you did a perfect combo. The pool, lake, and fireplace have got to be my favorite aspect of your wonderful home. I think I would put a chair near the pool and fireplace, overlooking the lake and just never leave. LOL!

Didin't want you to think that I was ignoring your response about your shingle color and brand. I went on vacation right after I posted to you. Thanks for your response. I thought the color you used was weatheredwood. I am going to choose between that color and driftwood. We are using the 30 yr shingle too. BTW, I just read your other thread and your driveway and home look beautiful! Nice job!

Very nice. Really dig the exterior. It does look like a Florida home but has some real interest with the stone veneers. Also dig the outdoor fireplace and bathroom tile. Wonderful choices for both. The listello is really nice too. Sarasota will come back. I think anyone building now is wise as land is comparitively cheap, materials and labor costs are mariginally lower than they have been due to demand and real estate pricing will eventually come back. I think over the long term commodity prices could drive up construction costs once demand comes back.
