Late to the Party White (well, cream really)

Dining Delight's table made me think that I hadn't had any of my old faculty friends over in quite a while. So I made some quick invite calls and put this together. Used my Lowe's centerpiece. Manhattan clam chowder (I know, it's not white), a shrimp salad and rolls. Lemonade and ice tea, too.

It's not on the elegant side, like the rest of you gals did. I'd have like to have done one like that, but don't have the pieces necessary. Anyway, my old cronies were pleased. And we talked and laughed all afternoon long.

Not much to have to explain, except that I made the place card holders with my own two hands (and a Dremel tool).

That turned out great OA, love how you did the sand and "corraled" it with the rope! ;o) You have pretty shell dishes too, it all ties together nicely. Glad you had a fun afternoon with your friends. Luvs

I LOVE this! The sand around the castle is adorable. What a great way to spend an afternoon.

Wow...that 'up the staircase' decor is really cool...love the black framed works & that mirror w/cool ornaments! rafor ...that 10' long hutch is gorgeous...& it looks so beautiful...love all your pretty dishes & how you added the Christmas season to it!...& how you added the long length of ornaments on it! Are 'gift bags' at a kiddie party really necessary?

she's noticed that the kids notice the presence or absence of goody bags, and is trying to be a good mom and hostess. FWIW. If goody bags are "expected" in your area, she should try to do something. It depends on the type of kids in the area Niece is crazy over the Jonas Brothers (heaven help us), and will be getting a JB pinata, and the kids can carry home whatever candy they collect in little bags. We're also going to look for the aforementioned pinwheels, or something equally inexpensive and relatively entertaining for the kiddos to take home when the party ends. I love the idea of crafts - in fact, on niece's last birthday, the kids decorated crowns and took them home (it was a princess theme), but there probably won't be enough time. The party will be scheduled for only a little over an hour, though, during which time cake and ice cream will be served and the pinata will be the primary entertainment. Don't the JB's wear 80's style sunglasses? I think they wear vests too. Maybe adding those to the party, take digital pics of everyone in their JB shades & get one vest that everyone uses for their shot, print them out and give on in a pre-decorated JB frame? Too bad the party isnt longer, she should be able to find cardboard type frames.. they can paint their names on them or something JB.. maybe glue JB pics to the frame? I have seen parties where one of the activites was their take away gift - like painted t shirts, decorated wooden frames (take pic of whole group to include), wooded vehicle sets you put together (Michael's has a bunch for $1). I love this idea For her, it isn't just a party bag -- it's a thank you gift to the friend for attending her party. If you ask her opinion, she probably think it's totally uncool not to have party bags. That's how I've always looked at goody bags as a thank you for coming Wow...never would have crossed my mind to give out goodie bags. My kids didn't, and I honestly can't remember them getting them. But then, my kids quit having kiddy parties over 10 years ago! haha. I can tell you that its a different world these days. My son is 24, gift bags weren't a big deal but these days it's all about the gift bag. I think we have Hollywood to partially blame for this.. Think Paris Hilton, star parties where they get gift bags with the latest phone or video game system. Lots of celebrity mags talk about gift bags, win the gift bag from such & such party, it's like a status symbol to get the best gift bag.

OSH, thanks for giving it the old college try, as the saying goes. The carpeting is pale beige, trim is (alas) honey oak, and not getting painted any time soon. Red, completely agreed. The reason I asked for input is that I think my eyes are crossing after looking at about 20 paint chips too many: a LOT of the RL pale neutrals look really grey to me. And many of the gazillion colors I've tried to test have looked grey in my MBR anyway, even in full sun or with every light on at night! (I know -- new bulbs and more lighting -- it'll happen but not soon.) Some of the greyness has come from bad colormatching, and maybe I'm choosing hues with a lot of grey in them b/c I subconsciously like it, but it's really not the color I want in this room. I'm after a warm, very light brown (read a real estate stager's blog in which she called it "dark white", is that counterintuitive or what?). But wait.... I just realized something. Can HD colormatch BM colors in the RL paint? Hmmm... (no, someone tell me to stop!) Rmkitchen, given my growing grisophobia (irrational fear of grey), I really appreciate your post. Evidently the RL colors are very complex, pigmentwise, and another poster here said hers looked *lemony* in her space -- which I could see, when I took the paint chip into my much sunnier LR/DR. If this helps at all, I think I'm narrowing it down: Studio Cream, Flour Sack White, with Deep Cream a distant third. If my HD can colormatch BM, I might ask them to try mixing me a quart of Ivory Tusk in the RL paint.

I do think it is cyclical but I dislike them as they always have a "molded" look to them - like plastic was poured into a mold and out came a cabinet door! As for wood, well I've never been a fan of wood cabinets in a kitchen. I'm sure this is due to the fact that all the wood furniture in my house is antique wood and to me, wood kitchen cabinets look like cheap reproduction furniture. I've always preferred painted cabinets in my kitchen. By "always", let me add that I'm 75 so for me, "always" is a LONG time! I love a white kitchen but whether it is stark depends a lot on the natural light in the room. One of my all-time favorites is this San Francisco kitchen <https://www.houzz.com/photos/kitchen-traditional-kitchen-san-francisco-phvw-vp~45913 But the natural light in San Francisco is VERY different from the light in my full-west facing kitchen in KY. My light is very intense, and in the late winter/early spring, with no leaves on the trees to cut the light, it is downright glaring. A white kitchen with this kind of light would have meant wearing my Maui Jim's in that kitchen in the afternoon! So I choose a light gray - still neutral and light, but not glaring. Look at the light in your kitchen. Ice cream glazed? Not sure exactly what that is, but I detest glazing on painted cabinets. It makes them look dirty in all those cracks and crevices. Yuck! I "warmed" up my light gray kitchen with my mid-tone wood floors, an island cart with a butcher block top, polished brass pulls, and lots of polished copper - some on hanging pot rack, some on custom cabinet where it is displayed above. My kitchen may be neutral, but it is not drab and cold!

OA, What a fantastic tablescape! That sandcastle is a perfect centerpiece for a "beachy" table and very unique. All the accessories including the sand around it are perfect. Love your dishes with the shells on them. How clever of you to dremel a slot for the placecards in shells! Your menu sounds delish and fit right in with your beach theme.
So glad you posted this! I feel like doing a beach table now....

Fabulous!! Love the sandcastle and your sand centerpiece with the rope. Really unique and cool looking. And you did great with your place card holders. Your dishes are perfect with the setting!

This is so different for a summer table. I love how you surrounded your Sandcastle Centerpiece with the sand..
Those dishes are so pretty and work perfectly with your theme. Great idea using the dremel to make your place cards. I have to remember that.
I bet your friends were so impressed with all of this and the fabulous menu too! TFS

OA, did you get those beautiful shell dishes at Home Goods? I was out of town yesterday and went to HomeSense (Canada version) and saw what I think were the same ones. There was a beautiful blue set that I was SO TEMPTED to get but since we were on the Harley, there was no room to pack it home. (Plus, DH would have known right away!) I keep thinking of them though....

I got them at Target. Didn't see any this year, as I wanted to get more. They came in sets of 4. But they are on the Target site. They come with a ridiculously big mug.
I think I know the blue plates you are referring to and, you're right, they are eye-catching.

Something is missing from your tablescape! I'll bet that red chowder in your white bowls looked fabulous (Much better than white clam chowder).

Just like everyone else, I think you have a great centerpiece with that sandcastle. The straw mats with the red trim are just perfect.

Well, I was hoping to see more white summer tables when I got back and I'm not disappointed! I'm over the moon crazy for your table, OA!! What an imaginative, original tablescape! Love the sandcastle and love the way you've surrounded it with the sand and the rope edging. Cute idea to add the beach shovel at one side, too! The menu sounds wonderful. Your friends were very blessed to get your invite. This should be in the Tablescape Hall of Fame, OA. It's that good!
