smoothing out a bumpy Schluter tray

Despite my best efforts to keep my already Kerdi'd shower tray clean and unharmed, the tiling in the shower has led to what is now a bumpy surface. The tiles I'm using are 1 1/4" hex and are only 3/16" thick, so I want to smooth out the surface before I begin tiling. Plus I think some extra thickness of hard stuff will make me feel better about long term structural integrity.

Can I just skim coat the tray with thinset, let it dry, then thinset and tile on top of that? Should I use something besides thinset? I'm using Kerabond for the tile if that matters. Obviously I will take care to maintain the proper slope. Also, how thick can/should this layer be?

One more question while I'm at it. I want to bed the radiant floor heating mesh mats into thinset in the rest of the bathroom, then thinset and tile on top of that. Can I use Kerabond for this as well, and how thick should I go?

Thanks a ton.

Joe
