Frost free or manual defrost freezer: Which is better?

We got an energy star rebate to replace our upright freezer and are having a hard time finding a replacement.

We currently have manual defrost b/c I learned years ago that your food keeps longer (less freezer burn). But I can't find an energy star manual defrost. Is this a problem? Will my food deteriorate that much faster? Are newer freezers better at storing food without causing deterioration?

Also, does anyone know of a good, medium-size freezer that meets energy star ratings? Around 13-15 cu ft.

I had a really hard time with this too. Self-defrost definitely is bad for your frozen food because it works by heating the box to just above freezing so the frost can melt. There are some top end "frost free" freezers that supposedly do a better job than manual defrost because they use evaporators to keep moisture out of the cooler box altogether, so that frost never forms. That is supposed to work without raising the temperature. There may be moderately priced models that do the same thing--I don't have enough knowledge.

Before buying, however, I'd check carefully into how the freezer actually works. Don't rely on the name "frost free". I don't think it's trademarked or anything, so it's up to the manufacturer to decide what it means. I'm keeping my manual defrost, coil shelves freezer for heavy duty storage, though I got a built in Miele frost free for my new kitchen. It hasn't been long enough to say how it does, but so far it seems fine, including on a poorly wrapped loaf of bread that was only frozen for a few weeks--not a great test case, but this kind of bread doesn't much like being frozen.

If you can't find a freezer you think will be really reliable for your purposes it's definitely worth forgoing the rebate, rather than wasting the food.

The storage space of the freezer is not intended to raise above freezing during defrost. The heating source is concentrated at the cooling coil behind the interior rear wall.

I replaced my 40 yr old 22' Kelvinator upright with an 18' Whirlpool when we moved. The Kelvinator was working flawlessly still, but moving it would have meant taking off the door and two doors to the house to get it back out of the basement where it had lived its long life and I left it - spotlessly clean and fully functioning - for the new owners. No real complaints about the Whirlpool, but in choosing a smaller more energy efficient model I've cut myself a little short on freezing space, it's really full and I've had to change my storage habits a little. I can wrap foods as well as anyone, did you know if not meticulously wrapped in a frost free freezer your foods will lose quality more quickly? My understanding is that frost free uses approx. 35% more electricity to operate too.... I bought manual defrost for longer term storage. With an assortment of coolers in the hallway to my mudroom for the frozen foods, a small space heater in front of the open door, I can have the freezer defrosted, wiped dry, refilled and running in about 40 minutes. I've defrosted it twice in the 16 months I've had it, not a huge chore to me. In a cooler basement and not as conveniently located (door was not being opened, closed as often), defrosting was only required once a year with old faithful Kelvinator ;)

cynic, Again, I don't have a freezer, therefore my statements are just based on my understanding of how things generally work. Also, I am not saying that a manual freezer is a lousy freezer. I can understand a self-defrost may not be as efficient because it uses a heating system inside to defrost regularly and there is a fan to circulate cold air. Also, I think a manual defrost most likely will need thicker insulation because it can't even out inside temperature as well, while a self-defrost will uses thinner insulation to give you more storage, which is a good selling point. However, some of this lack of efficiency is balanced out when you manually defrost a freezer, because you need a lot of energy to melt the ice and re-cool the entire freezer again and all the food that's been out for an hour or so. thinner insulation can give you around two cubic feet more of storage. "----dcarch, I assume you're saying keep a freezer in a cold garage.------" Actually I am talking about a split system. The condensing coil is installed outside of the house. This system gives you bonus cooling in the winter and will not heat up your house in the summer. The basic mechanics of a refrigeration cycle, just like an air conditioner, it is most efficient when you don't really need it. What I was trying to say was that a self-defrost freezer uses forced cold air and that can mean faster freezer burn if you don't package your food well; however, it is a good thing because the food get frozen much quicker. The quicker the food gets frozen, the smaller the ice crystals will form inside your food (less cell membrane damage), which may mean better quality food (similar to flash freezing). One of the main advantages of a frost free unit, besides convenience is its ability to keep recommended temperature quickly and evenly throughout the inside. The thermostat typically used in a freezer is of the capillary type. This kind of thermostat will take anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees F from the set temperature to turn the compressor on and off. This deviation from 0 degree F in an unevenly cooled freezer can mean a less than ideal storage environment for food. As Cilantro said, wrapping the freezer in anything insulating will help. Here in Michigan I lost power once for six days and had a big chest freezer full of beef. It didn't even start thawing until day 3. That's when I started canning beef on a gas burner that I lit with a match. I lost things like ice cream and the girls ate baked goods to their heart's content and shared with their friends, but I managed to save some of it, at least. I think you're safe, I wouldn't hesitate to keep the stuff if your freezer. The "experts" say that food will stay frozen in a full freezer for approximately 48 hours, so yours probably thawed very little. You may have ice crystals in your ice cream or have other quality issues, but I wouldn't worry about the safety. Annie

In a sealed bag there is no difference between the food longevity of a manual or Frost free freezer. Some people are under the mistaken impression that a Frost free freezer heats up the entire compartment. This is untrue. When a Frost Free freezer goes into a defrost mode a small heater turns on directly under the evaporator to melt the frost off the fins and coils. Generally this small heater is only on for about 10 minutes and the coils are behind an insulated wall and is also controlled by a temperature limiting sensor. With the new stand alone freezers using adaptive defrost technology, if you only open the freezer 2 - 4 times a week the freezer will most likely only defrost once a week and again this will probably be under 10 minutes and the temperature increase is behind the evaporator wall. This small amount of heat contained in the evaporator area for such a short period will have no effect on your frozen foods.

The frost-free environment does tend to promote freezer burn on food that isn't wrapped properly ... which is more of a side effect of the continual defrosting process. Frost is moisture collected on the evaporator coils from the air inside the freezing compartment, along with moisture in the room air that enters when the door is opened. The automatic defrosting process melts the frost and drains it away on a regular basis, resulting in a very low-humidity environment in the freezer, which in turn can pull moisture from loosely-wrapped items or items stored for a lengthy time.

I wish I knew why Energy Star didn't rate passive freezers or why it seems that way. Look at real consumption anyway. Energy Star as it is today is not a very consistent rating program. They have some arbitrary category boundaries and suddenly you get a rating even though it consumes a whole lot more than another one in the next category... Post your question on applianceadvisor.com about freezers and ratings.
