I actually love it, it is almost exactly what I am doing throughout my house on both interior doors and windows, except I will not have the blocks on the bottom! I love the blocks (thry have a name, cannot remember) but had to cut the cost somewhere!!! I was doing a piece of crown at the top, I may steal your idea, if that is ok!

well, we had similar trim (original) on our old dutch colonial. it's sort of similar to that, but this just misses. i feel like the top piece is really disproportionate to the bottom. trim is so important to a home and this seems to be lacking. the elements are all the same weight and need to be somehow nuanced. it would really help to see a full exterior view. i'm guessing this is a farmhouse? -can't be sure. and while i wouldn't expect to see a lot of overdone palatial detail i'm missing the kind of thoughtful finish that really makes a house sing.
maybe look around at similar styles of architecture to yours and see what's been done before and come up with something utilizing those ideas? you don't have to stick with what's been done before but the more you look around, the better you can identify what you think would best suit you. i hope i haven't offended; i know how difficult it can be. just trying to help.

Kate, you did not offend me at all and you're right, it is difficult. I'm losing sleep and woke up this morning with a pinched nerve in my neck. I hate when that happens. I'm including several more pictures so you can get the full effect. Btw, I saw a pic of your house and love the exterior siding and trim.

We are going for simple and clean. Hopefully classic and timeless. All interior trim will be flat (I mean squared off), no frilly trim detail. Sorry I dont' know the lingo.

I will say that this particular house is exactly what you described "coastal cottage" a look that I find very attractive. There are so many aspects and different mediums that go into a house that I feel that you need to decide what is most important to you. If your trim is what you want to pop then you should definitely consider something else. This trim is simple and is not going to standout. To be honest I have never seen an exterior trim that has a lot going on. Typical for for my neighborhood in AL is exactly what you have on your windows and doors. Where are you located and are there other houses near by that you can see what they have done? What about a picture of an exterior trim that you would like to copy!

Thanks Mbwaldrop for checking back and looking at my exterior pics. I live in Pensacola. I guess with the 3' overhangs you could say the house looks like it belongs in Key West or on an island. We are installing brackets at the corners too. The house may look like it belongs on the water but we are a block from the water.

I do not want ornate trim like a victorian or a colonial. I want straight clean lines. I like my exterior window trim. It's the door trim feet that concerns me. I will discuss with our builder tomorrow about my options if I change it. I'm worried it will be a problem because the siding is already installed.

I understand your concept better now. For your location you have a great concept. Those blocks at the bottom are called plinth blocks, they aren't right for a simple design IMO. I have them inside and out, but I leaned more toward a updated turn-of-the-century look.

Thanks Srercrer for identifying the name of the blocks. At least your plinth blocks go all the way down to the ground/porch. Your window and door trim is very cohesive and beautiful btw.

If you want it to look traditional the door head top trim should be a simple crown or cove molding that returns at the ends (mitered) instead of being chopped off.

The windows should have projecting sills and possibly the same head treatment as the door.

Well we were a "gingerbread cottage", but we could not get the city to pass our variance so now we are a brick tudor. I know it sounds like night and day but they really do have lots of similar traits!!! Thank you srercrcr, plinth block is right, could not remember the name! Yes, the white kitchen is the one, my trim is a 1x4 on both sides and at the top a piece of half round topped with another 1x4 and then one of three different ideas another half round piece, a piece of crown, or something called a backband. Not really sure! I like them all!!! Clean straight lines...with 3 boys I want something easy to wipe down and a 1x4 doesn't get any easier. I do think that once it is completely caulked and painted it will look much better than when it is freshly hung. I will admit that one of the reason to axe the block for me was that it is a dust collector and pollen season in AL can be horrbile and I did not want to have to clean the top of the block all the time. I like your window trim as well! Good luck in your choice! You cannot go wrong!

yes, what srercrcr posted above is more like what i had on my old house, except the top was a bit taller. it's a lot more finessed and the proportions are very nice. i love it!

Steve, yes the windows are Anderson but I'm not sure what woodwright is. Ours are wood interior and vinyl exterior with impact glass.

We've since changed the door trim. I just couldn't live with it. It's back to simple clean. 6" on sides and 8" on top. Plus it matches the window trim.
