OT...'Dream Birds' Transformation...just a little can of paint!

Is there a 'bird' holiday??? Oh, probably not...well, since I am having too much fun outside & vacationing, I am not getting much done for the Holidays!

But, speaking of Holidays, excessfroufrou was my Secret Santa on the Garden Junk Forum this past Christmas & I've been using some of her GJ gifts in my gardens... here's a couple of birds she sent me:

I have found out that I LOVE Rustoleum Hammered Spray Paint! Here's hammered brown:

Besides playing outside & vacationing (& having sweatshirt days & then tank top days), we've been working on siding our ranch-style house of 40 yrs...ugh! But, anyway, hope you enjoyed my new birds & here's a couple garden pics from this weekend:

And even tho I dug & dug up my Lilies from the old garden ...some of them just keep popping thru...here's some with the Hydrangea in the garden by my garden shed:

Mandevilla Vine wasn't liking our Spring/Summer weather so I had to move it from the Door Arbor & now it is starting to like it's new home at this old water wheel (no longer workin') that my DH built me some yrs ago:

The door arbor now has red Geraniums instead! The White Cleome are up & in a few weeks they'll be tall & I'll send a pic of the whole Door Arbor...

So, I'm still with you all...hope you enjoyed my garden tour...& I still am having time to "collect & stash!" LOL! TFLookin'! Jeanne S.

Jeanne, Birds should have a holiday. Especially if Dustbunnies do. (Go figure, I can't decorate for real holidays but I can do crazy stuff like tea parties for my dustbunnies.) So I'm thinking Jeanne, you are now going to have to do a bird table to share with everyone....
if you can stay inside long enough that is. ;o)

You've had me green with envy over your yard many times, and the above photos are no exception.

Frogs eat anything that moves and fits in their mouth or partially fits in their mouth. That includes other frogs. Frogs that overwinter in most ponds just sink to the bottom. They don't need anything to burrow in (like mud). They might go near plant roots or some structure of that nature. it has to not freeze to the bottom and a open area all winter is necessary unless the pond is huge and very deep. American and Fowlers toads do not live in ponds except to mate and will bury in the ground for winter but also enjoy a place to shade themselves and keep moist in hot summers. If they happen to bury in a bad location or a big freeze goes deep into the ground they don't emerge. Many die this way. Leopard frogs like to be near ponds and are born in ponds but they also go far from the pond into fringe areas. They are not as tied to a pond as the bullfrog or green frog. Frogs eat birds also - I've seen it. It is a matter of size. Bigger eats smaller. Snakes eat frogs and frogs eat snakes. Big birds eat both. Frogs do not eat fish underwater but will eat a fish that is stranded or caught somewhere flapping around (out of water or partially out of water). What they don't do is swim completely underwater gobbling up fish. Herons eat everybody (snakes, frogs, fish). I've seen Eastern Garter snakes go in my pond and I think they are after snails but I would not put it past them eating a fish if they can catch it. I have no water snakes thankfully - they have a nasty disposition. Thankfully I get no snapping turtles but an occasional painted turtle will visit and leave again.

You all make me feel so good!!! Rosey, I am so sorry for your loss. I had my father pass over thanksgiving a few years ago, it was the most different dinner we had even had. Kind of like a get to gether to see if we could some how make it a traditional turkry dinner. Well, guess who was in charge,,, hhmmm, me! I just handled it like my father would have liked eat have fun and leave,!!! Honestly.. he told me on his dying bed that he did want to be cremared and that he didnt want to be a burdrn on us all,, i asked him then what would we do with his remains he looked at me as told ne to tell the crematorium to keep them..AHHHH I was with him at one of his radiation appt and i just looked at my father, smiled and said " dad, i have your power of attorney and what i say goes..right? he agreed... "So i continued to tell him that if he didnt care about his remains himself, then he should think of his kids and how they will feel." I told him that i was going to take his ashes up to NovaScotia to be buried in our family burial plot next to his grandmother,, he says that he didnt want me to go through all of the trouble.. i then turned and faced him eye to eye and said "Dad, if you don't let me do this for you as well as for me and the rest of the family, then i will not cremate you and i will have you dressed as a clown in a coffin for all to see and display you for a long time.." He laughed so hard when i said that and he finally agreed to let me take his ashes up to Truro, NS. I know he was glad that i put my foot down, they just dont want to be a burden.. but when i offered to do some other things.. he changed his mine.. i was glad. We had a nice reunion and it gave us some closure.. kind of... It is hard to loss a family member over the holidays.. so i feel for you Rosey!! Bless you!! Laura

Thanks again ladies. I actually ended up selling that piece over the holidays to a gal in Ontario,Canada. She wanted it for her mom and was willing to pay the high cost of shipping from my little neck of the woods in WA state. Jan, the nice thing about staining is that sometimes the stain can do shading work for you when you paint, I didn't even shade the large white flower. I just thinned my white paint and stroked it on letting the undercoat of stain show through. Belle, I had tried other signatures using my initials, first name/last name, but they were too long, didn't look right, etc. and I wanted to sign my name with a brush not a pen. I originally didn't want to use all caps but the signature above is VERY easy to sign with a brush, all straight lines. LOL

I am envious of that porch. Didn't it make you feel good to see renditions of what can be? I think you might have been referring to my cottage and I loved what everyone did to it. Bad part is that I asked too early and I am itching to get started. A piece of advice is to save the photos to your computer because your forum might disappear just when you get ready to get busy. My favorite version of your house is the one squirrelhaven posted on Sun, Dec 16, 07 at 14:10. It looks the best by far to me. One thing I might suggest is to start planting your flowers from seed soon so you won't be in sticker shock in the spring. I don't know about you but $6 for a bag of dirt, $5 for plenty of seeds and free flats from Walmart sounds much better to me than $200-300 in plants. I am going to start planting some flats next month from seeds and have flowers EVERYWHERE this Spring! I have also got a lot of hedges in water with roots ready to plant. I got them from co-workers. IMHO If you have the flowers you have 3/4 of the look everyone suggested for your house. The rest is cosmetic, a flower box, a little paint and you are set! Good Luck and keep us posted!! I would never in a million years thought of painting those birds like that, they look wonderful. They look very Jeannified now. I love that hammered paint too. The lily garden is coming along nicely, I love the lilies and hydrangeas together, they look like they came from a florist. I know what you mean about not having time to post, we have been camping and vacationing a lot and then the yard takes all the rest of our time. After 40 years in one place your gardens look mature and well tended. My DH has found a house that he is wanting to buy and move to, I'm opposed. I've spent countless hours of work in our yard and do not want to start over now. Plus, I don't think the new neighboors would appreciate my yard art. Sorry,I didn't mean to ramble.

Jeanne, beautiful birds from Frou and I love the new look too. Enjoyed seeing all your flowers and decorations. You have so many neat things set out in your yard and they look great with your beautiful flowers.

I'll go for this look in place of indoor decor any time your willing to share.

marylee, luvs, frou...appreciate your comments ... & frou, my gardens aren't 40 yrs old ...they've just grown as I've grown (that means aging & retired) ...have always been an outside girl! & wow, good luck if you start over...cause your gardens are beautiful!!! Jeanne, the birds are so cute and I LOVE your garden. Using the doors for an arbor is wonderful. I've wanted a perennial garden for years, but moles are a big problem. I'm trying again tho, my son cleared out a spot in front of our old pony shed and we painted it green, my son added faux shutters. I'm starting small with some lilies and lavender. Oops, didn't mean to hijack your post.

That's wonderful, nana!! Gardening & being 'outside' is the best therapy ever (in my book) ...that is, if the weather allows you these luxaries!!! LOL! Your shed sounds wonderful...hope you will share a pic when DD is around. We often have moles, too...they are a pain! Jeanne S.

Jeanne, I am not an outdoor person at all. I started planting flowers, mostly annuals, years ago so that I would have to go outside. [other than being out there when the kids were too little be outside alone.] Now I look forward to planting every year.

isn't it amazing what a little bit of paint can do to give you a whole new look - love those birds

love the pictures of your gardens - I would dearly love to have the lilies like you do but the voles eat them faster than I can plant the bulbs. I did try containers this year with mixed results. The arbor is wonderful and I dearly love that water wheel - TFS .....

LOVE the way your birds turned out Jeanne! It's always amazing to see how your creations turn out. And, I LOVE the orange lilies with the white hydrangea! Looks so nice together. I know what you mean about plants that keep popping through...DH and I dug up a whole bed last year and I've still got things popping up. Love your bee balm and your red sun face....everything looks just beautiful! Wish I had your photography ability....TFS!
