Old Parquet Floors

Hi,

I have old parquet floors and was wondering what products you would recommend to clean and polish them? They are the original wood from 1969 and are not sealed with polyurethane. Hence, the Bona products really wouldn't work on these floors.

The original owner had carpet on most of the floors so they are in pretty good condition. I'd just like to use something on them that would restore their original shine and richness. They are pretty dull right now with some wear in spots.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I just read the chapter in Home Comforts on caring for wood floors--and she recommends just what my mother used to do for her own parquet floors, back in the 1960s. Vacuum thoroughly, and use a non-water-based product to remove the old wax. Actually, I'd get some paste wax specifically designed for floors, and I'd try it on a small area, buffing and turning my cloth until any dirt is gone. Wait until it dries (use good ventilation throughout the cleaning) and buff that clean place with a soft, dry cloth until it *ought* to shine. It may well be that all you need to do is clean and wax the floors! They can be cleaned with new paste wax (read the product label carefully) or with a special cleaner recommended by the floor wax manufacturer. You can also use mineral spirits, but I'd spring for a carbon-filtered mask that meets OSHA standards (they used to cost about $40 at Home Depot). Once you've done this really well, with two thin wax coats rather than one thick one, all you'll need to do for years and years is touch up high traffic areas. My mother did that twice a year. Keep water away from wood floors, and mop any spills immediately. I love real wood floors, and although they are more vulnerable, they aren't that much work.

You've inspired me to pay better attention to my own wood floors!

Anyone have any experience with beeswax-based floor wax? Is there such a thing? I would love to switch my own floors from petroleum-based waxes to something like beeswax.

You did inspire me, and I researched natural floor waxes and strippers. Don't know about the wax strippers, yet. However, it looks like carnauba wax is the best bet for floors. It's made from Brazilian palm leaves, sustainably harvested, and it's harder than beeswax.

If you find a natural, non-toxic wax cleaner/stripper, please update us!

We are very close to deciding to replace our old damaged parquet floors with lyptus. I have read this wood is photosensitive so there will be color differences between the floor that is under a rug and floor that is exposed to daylight. Is this a problem for anyone who has had this floor for a while. Is it any different from other types of wood floors? I would love to see pictures, especially of floors that have been installed for a while. This looks like a beautiful and durable wood. Thanks. Barbara

Some years ago I had to have asbestos removed from the cellar of a house I was selling, and I had to have the air checked after the removal to measure the concentration of asbestos. It was not expensive to test, but the removal of asbestos was costly because it had to be done according to strict environmental protection standards and had to be disposed of properly. If you can install new flooring over the existing flooring that may or may not have asbestos, that's you best bet. As for your immediate worry, get your hands on a vacuum cleaner that comes equipped with a HEPA filter, and thoroughly vacuum the place. Alternatively, if you can stay someplace else for a few days while you have the place tested and, if necessary, professionally cleared of airborne asbestos, that would be the safest thing to do.

I installed Hermitage Collection: Moet. I love the look and couldn't be happier about that aspect. That said, there is an issue with fading. To be fair though, our living room gets full sunlight all day long. We live at the beach and the sun is very strong. After just a few months I pulled up our area rug in the living room and there is obvious fading. So not super happy about that. Just thought you all should know that fading will happen if you have strong sunlight. Maybe even soft sunlight but I can't speak for that. FYI, I am in a differnt house now and I am going to use the same product. Mainly because I love the look ( large size planks and beautiful finishes) and I am so sick of renovations and issues with homes that I just don't give a damn if it fades. One last, while I was originally looking for flooring I read in reviews for other companies products horror stories of their hardwood/engineered floors' finish bubbling. I can happily attest to this not happening to our's. It's been installed now for three years.

Sophie, I think that you are too harsh in calling this a vanity project. The poor OP is just trying to learn if this is practical. I know nothing about how parquet floors are put down and their tolerance for adapting to heat and different levels of moisture. Kudos to the OP for looking to save it. Not every little country church has high ceilings. At 1000 sq, I don't think that this is going to qualify as exactly an example of a "high steeple church" as my wife calls some." (She is in the business.) First thing you need to do is get clear on how much heat you can make a parquet floor take. Then you will know how much heat the floor can emit at that temperature. That is a simple calculation for a hydronic heat engineer. Lastly, does that number match your heat losss calculations? Thickness of the wood does not bother me that much. If there is enough insulation underneath the heat source, it is not going to change your heating costs. If the R=value of the parquet is 1.4, underneath is R-30 and the overall R-value of the building walls and ceiling is R-30, where is the heat going to go? What kind of heat to use? That depends on what fuel sources are available. If you have natural gas, you need to have a boiler. Any boiler can make 80 F water, you just need a thermostatic mixing valve. If your structure is amenable to radiant floor at that temp, you will have uber combustion efficiency. Radiant floor combined with some other heat delivery mehanism is going to be uber expensive. Who can afford to install two heating systems? I guess it might be 1.5 since a single boiler could supply both floor and other types of emitters (think cast iron radiators.) Finally, if you can't have radiant and parquet floor there may be more than one way to punt. One way, of course is another kind of hydronic or forced air heat. If your heart is more set on radiant than parquet floors, you could put the parquet to another use. How does a parquet wall or two appeal to you? You could do parquet wainscoating, or parquet trim around windows and doors. How about a parquet ceiling? I've never seen parquet kitchen cabinets, but why not?

Thanks for your reply and the benefit of all your research! Although what you suggest sounds like a lot of work for an entire townhouse of parquet floors, I do think it will be worth it in the end. I'm sure my floors will be beautiful given that much TLC!

Use a floor polish occasionally that is designed for parquet to bring back the shine lost by the constant usage. Apply a water based acrylic wax to the floor which does not require buffing and let dry.
