A Few Thoughts On My True Refrigerator
Comments (26)We purchased a Hoshizaki R1A-FS fridge recently. Overall, I love the fridge. It is brutal and totally dominates all the weak residential fridges. Pros: 1. R1A-FS maintains the temperature much better than the older Kenmore (rebranded Whirpool). The Kenmore fridge does not keep the temperature well when we open the door frequently (I kept a stand alone thermometer inside the Kenmore fridge to check the temp. the fridge does not report the actual temperature itself). The commercial fridges are designed much better to maintain the temperature and to deal with frequent door openings. Thanks to the powerful compressor and for strong forced air circulation inside the fridge. 2. All stainless steel interior and exterior. Stainless interior does no absorb smells and easy to disinfect. Plastic is porous and absorbs smells over time. The residential fridges with stainless steel interior cost beyond $10k. That's crazy. Most of the cheaper residential fridges do not have real stainless anywhere (the front door is regular coated steel). 3. Hoshizaki gives full 3y warranty (the compressor is under 5y warrarny). Warranty for the most of residential Fridges is 1 year. For comparison, True commercial does not give ANY warranty for residential use. That's why I excluded them. 4. Parts are heavy duty. The steel is heavy gauge. The condenser motor is Morrill with 12years of design life (of non-stop use). The compressor is Copeland. Everything is easy to access if repair is needed. 5. Ease of maintenance. The condenser cleaning is very easily. You can access everything by removing 6 screws on top of the unit. you do not need to move the fridge anywhere. In comparison, vacuuming of the Kenmore fridge is hell. The condenser is at the bottom and you can not vacuum all of it easily. The condenser is a dust magnet and the only way to clean it well is to use a strong leaf blower. The compressor is also at the bottom of the fridge and it i hard to access. 6. The delivery guy helped me move the fridge into the house. R1A-FS is more than 300 lbs and it's hard to lift it alone. 7. There is alot of space inside. 8. Price. It is below $3k and much cheaper than comparable residential fridges (e.g. Blue Star, Hestan, True residential, etc). Cons: 1. The noise when the compressor and condenser fan are on is about 60-62 dB (I measured it with my cell phone). It is not hat bad, comparable to a window A/C or a room fan on high setting. The noise is mostly from the condenser fan. The compressor and the evaporator fan do not make much noise. The noise could be reduced by using a larger condenser and a different blower design. Of course, that would make it more expensive. The blower motor for the condenser runs at 1550 rpm. I am not sure it it has to run that fast. 2. The power consumption could be lower. They could use PSC or EC blower motors instead of the shaded pole motors. That would increase the price....See MoreRefrigerator remorse
Comments (7)I've had the Frigidaire commercial refrigerator for a couple of months. It's available w/ either a solid door or glass door. We got the glass door model. Couple of reasons--less stainless steel to look at & less SS to get dented. Frigidaire Refrigerator is made by Arctic Air. The Frigidaire version is better looking...louvered grill, etc. Interior walls of Frigidaire are plastic vs steel in the AA. Etc. Compressor is very quiet. However, the fan inside the refrigerator is another matter. It's pretty loud and has a highish pitch to it. For the most part, I've gotten used to it but can't say that it has totally faded into the background. Also, this fan runs constantly except for when the refrig goes into defrost mode (twice a day). The other thing I don't like is the light which is on a rocker switch vs an automatic door switch. I suspect the fan would be less of a factor in the solid door version because of more insulation. Also, the solid door is considerably more energy efficient. The fan noise may be a deal breaker for a lot of people. Possibly, the fan can be replaced with another one that will run quieter? Again, probably much less of a factor w/ the solid door refrig. Doors are not field reversible. You have to order handed versions and the Frigidaire glass door is not available in left hand version. AA does offer a LH glass door. Shelves are hard (for me) to adjust but that's mostly a one shot deal. Once you have them in there, you're not likely to want to change them. Overall, I'm happy with the refrig. I'd score it an 8 out of 10. My first experience with a commercial/ quasi commercial unit. Love the sturdiness of the shelving. You can plunk down full cases of beverage with no worries. And the space is wonderful--something I really appreciated over Thanksgiving when I didn't have to do a juggling & stacking act to get everything stashed away. My young adults sons think it's cool. 1 year warranty/ 5 year warranty on compressor Mine was a scratch & dent. Paid 1K for it & $99 for addt'l 5 year warranty. Also, these are freestanding refrigs & not meant to be enclosed. I plan to semi enclose mine in a 36'' space (to accomodate most refrigs) and allow for plenty of air circulation w/ cut outs, etc. Here is a link that might be useful: Arctic Air...See MoreCommercial refrigeration/freezers in a home kitchen?
Comments (15)If anyone is out there listening who has any experience with Beverage Air commercial freezers, could you please tell me how noisy they are? We had a commercial grade freezer in our old house, in the pantry, and I never noticed it being particularly noisy. I loved the fact that it kept food much higher quality for a substantially longer time than a standard residential unit. Now that our house burned down in a forest fire, and we are rebuilding, I can't find a freezer like the one we had, and am considering a Beverage Air unit, but the one hesitation I have is the noise level. It will be in a large pantry area (large enough to avoid problems with heat), next to the kitchen, below the master bathroom. So if it's not terribly noisy, I don't think it would be an issue. But if it's really, really noisy, I wouldn't want it at all, anywhere. Anybody have any experience with these? Or a similar brand (like True)? It will be for use as a sort of backup unit, for larger amounts of freezer food, because we like to get a side of beef, and then I premake a lot of meals for our large family that I can then reheat through the year when things get too crazy to allow time to cook. Our main refrigerator/freezer will be in the kitchen, but we've always had a second unit in the pantry....See MoreCommercial TRUE vs Miele/Sub-Zero
Comments (4)No, it isn't a terrible idea providing you are aware of a few caveats and limitations. I have an all fridge unit with the glass door in my kitchen. There will be NO warranty as it will be installed in a residential kitchen. IMHO, it's worth the risk as these units are about one-quarter the price of a SubZero. The actual refrigeration unit is fairly simple and can be serviced by anyone who works on refrigeration. They are not quiet if that's important to you. Having two units would probably be fairly noisy. True does manufacture several units that can be installed with remote compressors to mitigate the noise....See Morelascatx
