Shopping Therapy Part 1, Dollar Tree and GW

I've been in the midst of a Fibro Flare, so getting darn little sleep and a whole lotta pain in both legs (and everywhere else.) Which has been a big problem this past week since I'm trying to clean out and organize the garage

bit by bit. Getting to do something FUN last Sunday seemed a good idea as I knew I had a hard week ahead of me trying to get stuff done around here.

So Sunday I went my dog club's Picnic in the Park meeting. My friend did the driving and we passed a Goodwill on the way, so her truck just pulled right in like mine does. Its a good thing too. LOL. Aside from finding a few goodies, I actually found TWO pair of NEW tennis shoes.

I have to say, this was GREAT timing. ;o) For one thing, I'd been planning to hit Walmart and get a new pair as mine have seen better days. I specifically like the slip-on kind. No ties or velcro. I wear soft slippers around the house, but need my "tennies" for outside... and shopping. I've actually never looked at shoes in GW as I'm too busy in the other areas. Finding these, THAT day, was a sure sign my little guardian angel was along for the ride. You see, that morning, I'd done the shower-fix hair-put on make-up, and good slacks and top, so I'd look nice for the club meeting. But.... I put my house slippers back on since I had over an hour to kill before leaving. (you know where this is going don't you?) Well when my friend and I were getting out of the truck at GW, I happened to look down and see I STILL had them on! Jeeez, ratty old slippers just doesn't quite complete the look I was going for. I was mortified actually! She had no sympathy and was laughing her head off. So I said I'd just have to check their shoe section to see if there was anything at all I could grab to wear to the meeting.

Imagine my surprise to find TWO perfect pairs! One in tan, and one in denim. For $5. I was thrilled.

Then I scored a couple of goodies. A Charming Tails Christmas music box-snow globe, not bunnies but

two little CT mice. It was too cute, and too cheap, to leave. A pretty PURPLE glass candle 'bowl' with a pewter top, and the pewter top had bunnies on it! I found a little metal candleholder with bunnies, and two

little vases. The slim green glass one is soooo pretty, photo doesn't do it justice. (The tiny yellow-green

vase is for a garden junk project). Since I've been wanting a pedestal cake plate with dome, and unwilling to buy a new one.....GW and Dollar Tree obliged for me to MAKE one. And a small dessert one as well.

I found the two domes, and then found two heavy plates that went perfect with each one, at GW. Also a heavy short candleholder for the cake plate base. A quick run in DT netted the other candleholder to glue on the smaller one. I also got two more candleholders and vases at DT to make a pair of hurricanes.

Unfortunately for my wallet, it wasn't half-off day at GW. Dang, I sure needed it to be! I think its tomorrow tho, wonder if I should hit my regular GW? LOL.

Hey Karen,
I have scored some great footweart at GW.
I found a brand new pair of Stuart Weitzman peach leather flats with the $99 Nieman Marcus clearance price tag still attached and since it was senior day I got them for $3.75.
I also have found 2 other pairs of sandals, both brand new also for $3.75, a really cute pair of brand new white denim backless slipons, but it wasn't senior day, so they were $4.49. LOL
By the way, the GW's around here will give a senior discount every day, but only 10 or 15% depending on the store. You just have to ask.

Good job on the cake plates! And it sounds like you have lots of projects to take up your time. My GW is getting awfully high priced but sometimes you can find bargains. I love the green bud vase...

jdez or shall I call you Jae? :) -are you finished insulating? What is next in your DIY world? So the blasted soffit! Argh! The main hugemongous support beam goes right through there and that is why there is a soffit. Who puts soffits in these days, everyone is busy taking them OUT! Boo! So I *think* the crown will be in front of it and up to it so you won't see a big gap. I hope to find out when I get home from work tomorrow. See, see I told ya! It IS Seattle Mist and it does look gray in the kitchen. Crazy color but I do really love it reading both ways. Island stain is gray but the wood reads through yet. It's called silas and it has a black glaze over it - Shiloh cabinetry. Good grief I hope the floors are life proof but they are wood so they will patina. They are hickory and more rustic with the hand scraping, etc. which I hope will help hide all that 2 boys and a dog have to offer. With it being so open I didn't want a huge transition in flooring so we kept the living/dining/kitchen all wood. So yes, to accommodate the MW and the fridge (or keep it from sticking way out) we pulled those base cabs on the fridge wall forward 6" and the uppers there are 18 or 19" deep, I already can't remember. Doh. Anyhow, with it being so open I didn't want 6" of the side of the fridge hanging out. Bonus that the counter will also be deeper there and that is where I anticipate the toaster and coffee pot to live as well as it being lunch making station. They should all be easily tucked out of view too. I have a very love HATE relationship with FB myself and typically only get on there when prompted by someone else. I have worked in purchasing or materials besides a brief 11 year stint in healthcare when we started a family. Healthcare because they offer part time work and quite a variety of it. So now my kiddos are older and I am back in Purchasing but not in automotive or manufacturing anymore. Breath of fresh air to do something different but still in purchasing. I like numbers and I like variety. I too hope it's happy and long lasting as I am not a job hopper kinda girl. Thanks for not asking, lol. I don't mind. ;) Michelle-thank you. They are pre-finished solid hickory. They had 2 stains and we picked the lighter one (tobacco I think they call it), the other is more a java really deep color. We thought it would show too much dust so we stuck with this one and I like it. It also kind of grounds it as the fireplace and mantle were looking a little formal to me and I think the floor adds back some casual feel. We are not formal people at all. So mini-rant - dh is adamant about wanting cup pulls. 1 - I don't like them as I like to reach from the top not the bottom and 2 - what? why on earth does he care about the pulls and 3 - who uses the kitchen and not just to get a glass for a drink. Pfft. Shaking head. I hope he doesn't mind me going out to the barn when he's building it and insisting on flower boxes or something........turkey. Unfortunately for him I am just as adamant about NOT wanting them. I get his point, they would look nice and I get it he likes the look but they'd drive me nuts to use so it's a no go.

Karen, great finds and so glad you got out with your DD. Last weekend I got to go Yard Saleing with my DD and we had a great time and found quite a few treasures for very little money. I think I told you on the phone she had discovered our forum after I had been telling her about it for ages and all the neat things everybody was doing. Yesterday she had to work and I was making grape jelly. I had to run to the store to get more Sure-Jell and stopped at a couple of YSs on the way. One had a neat set of dishes for only $10-- gold colored with brown trim, ironstone service for 12, with serving pieces, very fall looking. I kept going back and looking at it, but finally talked myself out of it, because DH keeps telling me that my cabinets are so full of heavy stuff that they are going to fall, and I just didn't want to listen to it again. My DD asked me why I didn't buy them for her-- my DD who is so afraid of clutter is getting addicted to dishes just like her Mom. LOL I love your village and the new piece fits your life so good.You have great taste and patience for finding just the right pieces. Can't wait to see what else you found. Prayers, Janet

Yacht, my daughter took me to Target last week as I specifically wanted to go there to get the WITCH Nutcracker. I'd seen her online. Well they had a lot of every other one for Halloween but NO witch. I was soooo disappointed. I came home to order the one online and found "she's out of stock". Blast it all, so frustrating. A few days later, my darling DIL came over and decided to surprise me with the Dracula Nutcracker. He's cute and it was sweet of her to get him. But I really want the witch! Jeanne, not sure I can get to Kohls, need a driver and it would be next week. Those black lanterns everyone is finding to decorate with are going to be elusive but I'll get one some day. Kathleen, normally "retail therapy" works great, but this time the leg pain is totally off the charts and each step is agonzing. I just can't work in the yard any more I guess. Can't do much of anything but that's a another Pity Party and I won't invite you guys to it. I'm determined to do my Halloween decorating this weekend but I have a feeling it's going to be a challenge. (guess I should thank my lucky stars its NOT Christmas, huh?!) hugs, Karen

OA, if you don't go spend money, then we are failing at being Enablers here. Now go, you don't want to be responsible for our failure. Dreamgoddess, you are a good friend, LOL. But I think I'll keep my pink Santa. By the way, there is a VERY similar one on eBay if anyone is interested. Says its from 1990. Mine is an even older piece and looks like this one was copied from it. Also listed is the Santa and Sleigh in my first photo. Since I can't do two clickable links, here is the info for that piece. I think a smaller rocking horse, and one or two other items. I can't wait to get them all out and see what to DO with them. I know I want to put them all in my living/dining room. LOL, again, PM! Wow! Been there, done that! Used to wear some really comfie sandals to work...Rockport, so I had 4 pair of diff colors....you know where this is going...a co-worker laughing....looking at my feet...argh...one dark brown & one black sandal!

You did score, girl! So it was meant to be! Love the pedestal cake domes you created...those will be fun with your lovely collections! And your glass pretties! TFS your fun day! And hoping for a better (legs) day tomorrow for you! Jeanne S.

OMG! Karen, your story brought back memories--rushing to get to work, look down and nasty looking comfy yard shoes still on, or like Jeanne, sitting at desk and look down to see two different colored high heels--and nothing to change to until I could run home for lunch! (I finally started carrying an extra pair of black heels in my car since I knew I'd probably mess up again.) I can imagine your embarrassment--and your friends hoots of laughter! ;o)

Lots of good finds (in addition to the tennis). Those domes will keep goodies protected from the kitties and look good too. You always seem to find neat bunny items, that purple jar is just perfect for you and the metal ones will work indoors or out.

Glad you had fun and were able to go visit with your friends.

Great finds and LOL about your shoes! Your guardian angels were working overtime to have those tennies there for you! I've done something similar when I had been at work for awhile and realized I had my top on inside out! Good thing it was something with a 'good' label, not my usual WM stuff - and that I was the 'boss'! LOL At the time I was in serious sleep deficit cause we were lambing.

Great finds, Karen. I love the green vase! I hit the local SA-Ltd on Sat. looking for *more* vases and picked up some great things too -- including a rooster & chicken compote. :)

Loved the stories about the mismatched sandals and shoes. LOL!!! The worst I ever did was go to work with unmatched socks. It was unintentional, but you'd never know with me. I love my wild socks. And, yes, I have TONS of "holiday" socks. :O)

So sorry to hear about your flare-up. That is sooooo funny about your slippers. Looks like you made a great glassware haul. I need to get my covered cake stand out and do something with it. It takes up so much room, so I have it stored way out of the way.
