What colors did you use in your new home?
Comments (17)I had originally picked greys and greens (revere pewter was the grey, can't recall the greens). When I looked at the samples in the house I realised the high desert landscape fit better with warm beiges with no pink undertone (I have a strong aversion to flesh tones). I wound up with BMGrant Beige and Huntington Beige with a few deep purple accents in backs of niches and powder, and slate blue that compliments the purple for other accents (niche and accent walls in guest room and office). Then I went a little crazy and painted my master bath and bedroom grey mirage - a soft grey green - but added a light purple wisteria accent wall (and bookshelf columns in the entry leading into the room). All trim throughout the house is bone. I had a consultation with a designer who encouraged me to think about the color architecturally - emphasising the volume of a wall or what Zi want to do (warm it, recede it).. So we added a picture rail to pull down the 20 ft high ceiling in the living room, bringing the bone ceiling color down the walls to the rail. Also, painting the largest blank wall the warmer Huntington beige, including wrapping the paint around the other side of that wall where it becomes the back wall/entrance into living room from the entry. I'm reserving final judgment until the floors and cabinets are in......See MoreRE:fitting new interior door into old frame!!
Comments (5)Moving the striker plate can be done, but doing so usually is difficult if the distance moved back is not more than the width of the screw holes. It is difficult to make new screw holes using the old ones as a starting point. I have had some success= at using a brad point drill bit and starting the hole at an angle. I then straighten the direction to make the new hole. That is done after chisling out the jamb so the striker plate can move back. I use 2" screws to reattach----to minimize the old hole/new hole from stripping out. The other solution is to move the door stop on the jamb---if, of course, it is moveable....See MoreNeed your ideas for a new-old home,...
Comments (11)ccintx,take my comments any way you please but they are intended to help you maximiz benifit from relevnt advise vs just ingaging in chit chat. IMO,your hvac question should be along the line of,(We are building a new home and weighing benifits of hvac ducts inside living space apposed to attic. The house will be desighned to look and feel like a vernacular farmhouse so we don't want to distract from that look and feel.) Here's how you opened the discussion. "What are your thoughts on the energy efficiency of HVAC ductwork that is exposed? I'm referring to the ducting that is visible inside of the home" Then you asked "Would it be as efficient as ducting contained within a soffitt? Your thoughts?" You would have recieved similar but more inhanced advice about ways of desighning home so fir downs act as ducts and forget ideas of ducts in sofftis, that's worse than attic. Specificly from rater who I mentioned as advocating ducts in living space. Rater has experience with fir downs acting as ducts that inhance farmhouse look rather than distract. This would certainly have been talked about after your secound post in that thread, where you said "I have been researching spiral ducting and the efficiency of it makes sense to me. What about the placement of the ducting within the living space?" If that doesn't sound like a hack retrofit rather than planed new construction,I would like to know why. If that doesn't clear up your confusion,I'm stepping back so mind readers can answer....See MoreAnyone using old doors or shutters for interior decor?
Comments (11)I found a shutter for our TV equipment/DVD storage closet to the right of FP. The more white part is actually tin, and both sides of the shutter is finished (has the same color and lattice work). The guys that made the TV cover (over FP) made it into a door for the closet. They added another panel at the bottom to make it the desired height and gorgeous hinges. I found a pair at a local antique store that are a close color match to the kitchen island. They just lean against the wall in the DR. You could use them to cover built-ins, scroll down in link. Turn one horizontal and add hooks along the bottom to use for coats, hats or dog leash. Use on a porch....See Moregraya
