Comments (15)drsvelte: Many thx for yr feedback. I really love the look of the Thermador (it's a good buy right now & hubby's pressing me to make 'the decision'), but am wary too after reading some of the reviews here and on epin/consumer reports especially, about repair issues. I too am confined to 27", so it limits what brands I can consider. Was leaning towards Dacor (love!) & Thermador and have heard some great things about the new Electrolux wave control; problem is, it's not avail. yet in my neck of the woods, so I may have to wait a few months if I do choose to go Electrolux. Honestly, you'd think manufacturers would understand that people are more than willing to pay reasonable $$; they just want something to be well built & WORK!!! Doesn't say much for a $4000 product does it when you have to buy an extended warranty as guarantee against major defects/repairs and lo' and behold, after the warranty expires, $500 every couple of years for repair jobs. Feels good to sound off!!...See MoreRepair warning on KA DWs
Comments (7)jkom your machine has a 5 year warranty from Kitchenaid that covers the wash & drain pump-motors, heater, electronic controls and racks. Check your owners manual. If you are careful to keep trash & foreign matter out(bones, screws, jar labels, broken glass, bread bag ties, golf tees, paper clips, bobby pins etc.) of a dishwasher. They generally run for years without trouble. Use a quality detergent and keep the machine clean and you are good to go!...See Morenew DW recommendations?
Comments (15)I wanted to thank everyone for their great comments. The comment about the detergents is definitely understood. I've seen that come up in several other threads. I was actually thinking that the FAQ needs a good writeup (I'm not qualified to write it) about STPP, phosphates & lack there of, and enzymes. It didn't take much reading here to realize that I was so ignorant about dishwashing soaps. :) I will definitely go and check out a few models to see what the interior is like and gauge which might fit our needs. The Upper Cutlery Tray (thanks alwaysfixin!) is not something I considered... an interesting idea! I am definitely not going Stainless Steel for the front. Saves money, and doesn't go at all with the current kitchen makeup. Plus, I don't think I'm a SS type. Also, thanks (again) alwaysfixin for the warning about their size/depth. I gotta figure out how far back our current one goes to see what will fit. I can measure the counter top for a start.... And for the comment about the coupons. I can always use another $50. Take my wife out to dinner (hey, if we get a new dishwasher, maybe I should get takeout so we can use it.... nah.) I basically never used the heated dry in my old dishwasher. I'd run it over night and dry off whatever was left (and empty the plastics that flipped over!) I guess having it could be handy occasionally, but the energy used kinda offends me. It is interesting speculation as to why we don't use the washer as much. It is true that our current (Dead) one is loud (wish I could measure it to compare to new ones) and we do have an partially open floor plan (kitch/dining/open-door living room - but not family room.) My intent was mostly around the fact that we don't have enough of every type of dish/glass/utencil so that we could leave them dirty while it fills up. So we washed what we didn't have as much of while the other stuff accumulated. Then we'd go "good enough, lets fill it and run it!" and away we'd go. But I won't deny, it was loud. Thanks again for all the info. I'll probably be buying next week (I'm away teaching a class the rest of the week) so I'll update the thread with what I get and what I think. Comments (21)We, too, had a workhorse KA dishwasher. I fairly wept when it gave its swan song after 20+ years of washing dried on cheeses, tomato sauce and other malodorous gunk. We purchased a new one, bought the extended warranty and had a service call within two months. Control board went. Frustrating part was that Lowe's told me that no matter what died, it was covered. Well, it was covered, but I couldn't get anyone to come out. I'd make an appointment, and the company would cancel the night before. Finally, I called Lowes, told them about it and they sent someone right out. Currently, the little happy chime doesn't signal denoting the end of cycle .... probably signaling another service call. Sorry to corroborate your experience, PKguy. I've become so cynical. I hear energy savings, it only uses a teaspoon of water, blah, blah, blah and I just put up my hand like a traffic cop, thinking "Please. I'll be replacing this in just a few years."
