What's the difference between SubZero 700TR & IC27R

I can only fit a 27" all refrigerator model that must take panels and be fully integrated. The 2 above came up when I searched in AJMADISON. Other then the drawers in the SZ 700TR is there any significant difference. Cubic feet is more than enough for me in either one.

The 700TR has the external drawers. The external drawer model has a little less capacity and uses more electricity, which makes sense given it has two temperature zones. The IC27R is the "column" with the solid door, and it sounds like it has different lighting and controls, plus soft close drawers.

Check through the specs and manuals and you're sure to find more differences. The column is a new model. The drawers one has been around a long time.

Thanks Pllog. I went to the SZ showroom to compare the two. As your list indicates, SZ really hasn't upgraded their technology. The sales person said they came out with this model because architects/designers wanted it - many people didn't like the 2 external drawers which is why I will be getting the IC27R also.

lasca - I didn't take it any way, makepar as much said it: "vetoed 7k purchase / which 42" side by side refrigerators should i evaluate / am seeking mid level to upper mid level on price point. " I don't think a pair of Freedoms fall into the mid price catagory even if his DW is tickled pink with them. We might also infer that space is an issue from the OP and 48" might not be possible. You should also take makepar at his word because he SPECIFICALY asked about 42" fridges. So.............1. there are still not many on the market, and 2. they don't fall into the mid price catagory. Of course there are a myriad of options on he market that might appeal to he and his wife if 42" and $$$ are not critical, but that's not what he asked.

Just for clarity, the Miele cooler boxes are made at the BSH factory in Turkay. The electronics are made by Miele, I believe (but am not sure) in Germany, and I've heard that final assembly is in Germany. Still not USA, but for what it's worth. I chose Miele primarily because the units fit better in my kitchen. I grew up with SubZero and originally assumed I'd get that. Both are good. SubZero has a long history of mostly exceptional units. Miele created the current offerings for the North American market so there's much less of a record, but the repair folks seem to think they're just as good. Things I liked better about Miele, besides the sizes, include the lower drawers that are the full depth of the firdge and the shallow door shelves, the height, the feel of the drawers and shelves, the angle of the doors when open, and, of course, the glamour lighting. I also like how easy it is to remove the shelves and baskets for cleaning. I think one of the weak points, however, is where the clips that hold the drawers on the rails connect. They're a little too plasticy, sometimes squeek, and I worry that they may break at some point. Oh, and getting the filters in and out is harder than it looks. OTOH, I love the drawer temperature selections. Word of warning: The dispenser is the weakest part of any unit, and the ice maker is second. You might look into the merits of the two models on that level as a decision point besides price. I have no information about it on these particular units, however. Whichever you choose will be excellent. Enjoy!

SZ is certainly a premium brand with the "whoo-hoo" appeal. Sort of sexy, even though the space is very slim. I HATE them, and rejected them for my latest custom build. As a cook, I really need what I just built- an extremely functional kitchen that has a "quadrangle" cooking space. Not just the triangle any more, and my pantry, cook top, oven, and sinks (always one to serve the cooktop)- none of more than a few steps away. It's a dream to cook in, and my refrigerator has a bunch of drawers/compartments.shelves to house all that is needed- at my fingertips. So take care- high end buyers have been through the "wars" with these appliances. If something goes wrong, check into service costs in your area. Make sure you have a LOCAL company, not just an 800#, to call in. It can be very expensive, to fix, and you could be waiting a long time for it. In the meantime, you have a big freezer- completely un-meaningful for me, but maybe you. And another pantry around the corner. High end people who cook often look at the # of steps and meal they can think of will cost them. Hey- if your sales market projects the wealthy younger set, as most probable, no problem. But experience doesn't always love these.

The repair person said it’s had a lot of work done in the past, but they’re not sure how reliable that is, as there aren’t records. What kind of work? Was it done by that repair person? If not, how does he know? Is he factory-trained or authorized by SZ? It all sounds kind of weird—especially the topping up of the refrigerant part and the lack of a repair estimate. If the house is located within reasonable distance (100 miles or so) of a different factory-trained technician, I think spending the $100 or $200 (or whatever it is) on another service call in order to get a second opinion would be a very good idea. After all, replacing the unit is not going to be an inexpensive endeavor. If they haven’t done so already, your parents could call SZ and see if they have any service records for that fridge. And call around to area appliance repair companies to see if any of them have worked on it, too. The records can be looked up using the serial number, the house address and/or the previous owners’ names. Btw, I own a 48” SZ, model 632F.

FWIW, NYChelen, I've had the 27" 700TR for about 10 years now, and I love the external drawers. I use one drawer for produce and the other for things I either don't use all that often, or for bulky items. It keeps the upper compartment's temperature steady (you don't lose as much cold air when you open the door because the entire bottom half of the fridge is still closed) and cold air "stays in" the drawer so you also lose less when you're taking out or putting in to the drawer.

I'm building a new kitchen and finding a larger fridge with those drawers has been a priority for me.

plllog has it down.

The 27R is without drawers and has the more modern layout, controls, lights, drawers. I believe it also has the updated sealed system - but don't hold me to that. It is rated to use 20% less energy than the 700 series which was designed last century. I think that's what accounts for the diff., rather than the dual zone deal - that's just a motor controlled baffle allowing more or less cold air into a particular chamber.

The 27R more closely resembles the BI series than it does the 700 series.
