Honestly, if YOU love it, that's all that matters. You're the ones who have to live with it. I think it's really easy to get caught up in what's "in style" or "marketable" and forget about what we really like. If you ever decide to sell your house, then you might want to change those things to be more in line with the trends. And who knows? By then, it may be back in style!

Thank you for your reply, MayzieGal. I do love it, but I see peoples' reactions when they see it, and I cringe. I can tell when they're trying to be diplomatic, but it's obvious what they're thinking. It would make me happier if I knew my guests really did like my bathroom, rather then have them patronize me. I like chrome as well so it's not as if I'd be getting a look that I don't care for if I did make the change. And I'm leaning more and more towards changing it (my husband doesn't care...am I lucky or what :-)?

your bathroom, your choice. It wouldn't be mine - but it is my sister's. She has it in her mstr bath (home built about 3 yrs ago). She has nickel/pewter in other areas of the house but her bath she wanted the shiny brass look.

I wouldn't go to the expense to change something just because of what other people think, especially if it makes you happy. That's the beauty of having your own home, you live there, not them, your choice, not theirs.

Brass is coming back. Look at Martha Stewart cabinet catalog. Why change what you like for someone else who doesn't live there?

What is anyone doing in your master bath anyway? You have a powder room and guest bath, and those are for the guests. Are people wandering around the private areas of your home? If so, close the door to your bedroom and master bath. If you're giving them tours, stop including your bathroom on the tour.

I wouldn't change it either, as long as you like it and it doesn't need fixing. The issue really isn't whether it's brass or something else, but is it well-presented, functional and pleasing to you. I have seen many beautiful and tastefully done bathrooms with brass fittings.

Sometimes these ideas about what is "in" or "out" are totally amok. For example, some of the shows on HGTV: a designer or a young couple walks in to a perfectly lovely kitchen or bathroom that looks like it has years of life left and says "this has got to go". Now that is crazy!

You are not crazy, continue to enjoy your new home and master bath:)

Keep it and leave a copy of the Martha Stewart catalogue casually open to the page with the brass accents. Mention you are a trend setter as brass is the new in finish...

I am just kidding, I like brass too but all of mine was in horrible condition. However I think gold/brass is rich and elegant.

If you and your husband like the brass I think it would be silly to change it. It's in the private area of your house and you should have what makes you happy.

I have a Casablanca shiny brass ceiling fan in my master bedroom that is 28 years old and I still like it.

All the brass being out comments remind me of hearing a couple 20 something year old newlyweds discussing how yellow gold jewelry is dated and grandma-ish. I'm in my mid 30's (on a good day) and all I have is yellow gold and I LOVE it. Damn sure not going to trade in my jewelry because it's "outdated".

I had no idea that yellow gold jewelry was "out". Wow, who decides these things? As far as the shower, I would love to see just one HGTV show where someone says, "I like the brass in the bathroom", instead of them covering their face and yelling "my eyes! my eyes!"

I agree. I am sick of HGTV being so darn unaccepting of anything that is different from what they want to sell us.

If people don't like your bathroom (and tell you so), they are either a) really close friends whose opinion you value but won't be put off when you tell them that YOU like it and they can just sod off, b) impolite jerks whose mothers didn't raise them any better than to not criticize people in their own homes or c) incredibly passive aggressive busybodies who watch way too much HGTV.

If you love it...keep it!!! I remember back in the 90s when we were building our first house and I had idea book filled with pics from Southern Living and Southern Accents. There was one pic of a gorgeous bath, so well-done and tasteful. It had all brass fixtures. I found that old book the other day, and STILL thought that was a gorgeous bath.

I honestly get so sick of the morons on HGTV. They are like crows...attracted to even the most hideous granite and stainless steel, I assume because it is shiny????

Of course, you're all correct (and I do appreciate your comments), but we're still going to look at shower surrounds over the weekend. If I see something that I like a lot better than what we already have (and if it's reasonably priced) we'll probably make the change. Otherwise, the brass will stay.

I tuned into the middle of "My First Place" on HGTV last night. A young couple who apparently had a large budget was looking at a beautiful large house with an updated kitchen and spacious rooms. They came to the master bath and the camera showed the vanity. The young woman said, "I love the double sinks and the granite. But I HATE that gold shower!" The camera pans to the shower that has a gold frame. Husband says, "I guess this would be our first project." The bath was beautifully updated, with two separate framed mirrors over the undermount sinks and oil rubbed bronze faucets. I'm not sure oil rubbed bronze faucets go with a gold shower surround, but the current homeowner obviously liked the look...or they updated everything else and didn't want to spend more for the shower. Oh well.

Ruthie, honest to goodness... please don't be swayed by those idiot youngfolk (and I say that as someone who just passed early 30s) on HGTV.

These are people who seem to consider it 3rd world to have anything less than a massive, dedicated master bath suite with a separate shower, sunken tub and double vanity (tell me, is it really that hard NOT to do the spit part of brushing your teeth at the exact same time? How about they just take turns using the sink? Somehow my husband and I have managed to coordinate this for years).

They get all excited about a gas stove and the fact that it's stainless without knowing WHY they even want a gas stove, or anything about how well the darn thing heats or how evenly it cooks -- I've never seen anyone with a copy of Consumers Reports on those shows. They demand a huge, professional cooking space for what? To make lasagna? Boxed mac and cheese? A turkey on Thanksgiving? Please. Think about it. You can't take them seriously!

I agree that brass is back; it'll just take the mainstream a bit to catch up. You love it, so why spend the money when you'll just end up wishing you hadn't in a few years? And, if you really want to spend the money, why not just share it with us instead. ;) We'll appreciate it much more than some store anyhow.

rosysunnygirl, you made me laugh with your post. Of course you're right and if you knew how old I was, you'd really slap me silly. To be influenced by these young'uns on HGTV is really ridiculous at my age (Without revealing, I'll just say that I'm a lot older than you :-). Everything you wrote is so true....granite and stainless steel must haves...it's like a broken record. Thanks for putting things in perspective.
