Miele Optima II DW - observations and a couple questions

I've had this installed and working for about a month, and love it - - it's virtually silent and cleans and fits more than my previous one that I also loved (Kenmore elite something). The cutlery tray really is a great feature for organizing those forks & knives, and makes putting them away a breeze. It doesn't have a energy-saver feature (which the Kenmore elite did), but this is my only complaint about it. We chose it b/c of its shallower depth, to get the integrated look with the rest of the base cabs.

Now the questions:

I've been using Cascade tabs and dishes and glasses really have no spots (that I notice or care about). Our water hardness is between 4-6 grains. Do I need to bother with salt? Will it change/improve anything? Anyone else that's never used salt in their Miele?

The wash time indicator, using tabs, seems to fluctuate between 2 hours 23 minutes and 2 hours 46 minutes. Why does it have different times? I'm just curious about this.

Have you read through your manual? If so, you would see that it says selecting the "tab" function is for tabs that contain rinse aid, as it will turn off the automatic liquid rinse aid dispenser.

Most tabs here in the US do NOT contain rinse aid, so this is a bit misleading, so you should turn the Tab function off. Otherwise, if it is on, your unit will not dispense the liquid rinse aid.

I have the Miele Diamante, the model below the Optima, and have it set to 6 grains of water hardness. With the Salt container filled, it will give me about 5-6 months before the Salt Refill light comes on. But for people with really hard water, like 20 grains or more, it would probably need refilled every 2-3 months.

When I fist got the unit installed a year ago, I used the Cascade Complete Tabs and Rinse Aid, since I had some of both left over. Even though everything was clean, I noticed that there was a "chemical smell" on everything. I could really smell it on cups/glasses. I then changed over to using the Miele brand Tabs and Rinse Aid, and have been very happy since then. It eliminated the chemical smell, and everything has a very nice shine to it and is very clean. I only use half a Miele tab for each wash, so the box of 72 tabs really give me 144 wash loads, which is almost 5 months worth.

THanks fauguy, I read the manual but probably didn't process the tab - rinse aid thing. I'vebeen using the complete tabs too and push the "tab" button.. Don't really notice any chemical smell...but maybe I should just order a box of the miele tabs to see if there's a perceptible difference.

shortycakes -- I use it for what I'd call "light" or day loads -- either the dw not super full or dishes that don't have heavy soil. Occasionally there will be a pot or pan in there that was used for soup or boiling. We both work at home and that thing gets full really fast. It's not unusual for me to do a load before or after lunch and then another one after dinner. I don't like to leave dirty dishes in there overnight and I never feel guilty about running it on Express even if it's half full as it's so fast. If the dw is super full and/or I've got heavier soil or a pot or anything with oil or grease, I'll go with Normal and put it on after dinner. Optima also has a china crystal setting. So if I'm using mostly dishes and glassware I do a china load with that. I've got a lot of old stuff and even the cut crystal goes in there. Primary reason I chose Optima was for c&c cycle, which also is a bit shorter. I have a 7 y.o. Excella in the house that doesn't have Express or Turbo -- for that one the c&c functions as my short cycle and I miss Express. But for someone who might not need C&C, I still think the Express option is something to go for. It's just so darn convenient (and it's not necessary to pay $5K for the pro machine to get it). Not sure which models have Express / which don't. But you asked a smart question.

Hi homepro01, You have given me pause. I checked out the reputation of this seller online and there have been mixed reviews. It seems a lot of the appliance places have mixed reviews! I will make sure that the deal is for a new dishwasher in the box with no scratches and dents and not a customer return. So, thanks for the reality check! lulu88: I suppose it is important to make sure that there are no punctures in the unit, not likely with a stainless steel tub, or with the hoses, but I suppose you don't want any leaks after hooking up the dishwasher. Be careful if the deal says "as is" because then you have no recourse if you find out something is wrong after purchasing it. I saw a couple buy the same fully integrated Optima model from the floor this weekend and it had a small dent and some scratches. The dealer said the retail price was $1,900 and gave it to them for $1,488. Personally, I thought that was still too high for the floor model. I have checked a couple more appliance places around here (San Francisco bay area) and it does appear that the prices for in-stock Mieles are dropping because there is too much inventory. I don't think this is surprising given the current economy and the slow down in construction.

Ok, so far some things in this thread are not true. I spoke with Miele about this two months ago before I got my Diamante. The 4 year extended warranty on the Miele dishwasher is $249, not $150. (Where did you get a $150 price from?) http://www.mieleusa.com/miele_care/miele_care_indepth.asp?nav=400&snav=490&tnav=492&oT=230&benefit=88&page=2&menu_id=30 If you have a non-Miele-Authorized installer do the work, you then get the 1 year standard warranty. Within that 1 year (12 months) you can then decide to buy the Miele 4 year extended at $249, but after the 12th month it can not be purchased. If you have a Miele-Authorized installer do the work, you get the 1 year standard warranty + an extra 1 year courtesy warranty (for a total of 2 years coverage). But here's the thing....you can still buy the 4 year extended warranty ($249) but it has to be purchased by the 12th month (not by the 24th month like someone else said). That means that during the 13th-24th month, both the courtesy warranty and extended warranty run together. My delivery and installation using a Miele authorized installer was $149, which means I get the 2nd year of courtesy coverage. I have within the first 12 months to decide if I want to buy the 4 year extended warranty. If I do, that means the 2nd year (13-24th month) it is covered by the courtesy warranty and extended warranty. But then on the 25th month (and for 3 years) it is covered by the extended warranty. So in this case, I'd really be spending $249 for 3 years of extra coverage, since I'd have 1 year standard and 1 year courtesy. Hopefully you were able to understand this. If not, call Miele and have them explain it, since you can ask them questions directly.

@antss I'm looking at the Miele G5105SC-$1479 and the Miele G5705SC-$1779 These won't be fully integrated flush under counter? To study them I was comparing with the installation instruction drawings with that of the G2432SC and I can't seem to understand what the difference is depth wise that won't make it flush - sorry if this is a stupid question but could you explain since I' want a flush look. My second question: Which dishwasher would you pick? My last question: My Mile will be to the right of the sink, will that pose a problem since the intructions say that the cutout for the "water-drain-electric pass thru." is on the right side of the dishwasher. I can switch it at this point of the remodel if that is a problem. Thanks

What brand of rinse aid are you using?
If you are going to buy the Miele tabs, you should also go on and use their rinse aid as well? Just make sure you keep that "tab" function turned off. Also, with the rinse aid dispenser you can set it from 0 to 6ml, with 3ml set as the default. I changed it to 1ml, and it works just fine. I felt the 3ml made glasses feel a bit sticky.

I have a Diamante and 6 grains of hardness. Cascade complete powder to the first step without salt or rinse aid produces sparkle on all components with wait times between runs of 5+ days using the normal setting.
