Confused on plumbing fixtures.....

We are preparing for the great bath remodel of 2011 and I am stumped on what I need and don't need for plumbing fixtures.

I am looking at the Delta Lockwood series.

That much I get. LOL

and then on it's own control we will have a wand on a sliding bar.

For your shower -- First you need a "master control" -- with with you select the water temperature, called a thermostatic valve.

Then you need a "volume controls" which selects whether your shower head, handheld, or both get water.

Behind the wall is the "guts" called the rough in. The chrome parts and handle are called the "trim" -- and you need both a rough-in and trim for the thermostatic valve and all volume controls that are installed.

I don't know much about Delta, but I don't think they have what you want, at least at that web site.

Easier, cheaper to install is an integrated thermostatic valve with volume control -- something like this -- one handle controls the water temperature, the other controls where the water comes out

I'm a newbie here, and definitely not a plumber, but I've done a lot of research on this topic. Most decent shower faucets sell the "trim" and the "valve" separately which to me is just a money making ploy. Even Pete's link for the Kohler faucet shows you that it is only for the trim, and that you still have to purchase the valve separately.

Moen makes a highly-rated valve that controls the thermostat and volume with one handle. This is called their "Moentrol" line, and thus it includes pressure-balancing and thermostatic control. You push/pull for volume and on/off and turn left/right for temp. faucet.com is one website I found that sells the trim and valve together. Here is an example... they have other selections. When you look at the model numbers the "T3112" is the trim kit and the "3570" is the valve. Once again, in most other places you would buy those separately.

I'm sorry for how confusing that first post was. I'm confused, obviously. Okay, I'll start over and try to make sense this time. I've done more research and I really want to get this right. I am going to take the 560 pump back and order something better. I think I have this one figured out, but if I'm missing something, please let me know. I have 540 gallons, I want 1/2 to go to my fountain at a slower rate. It is a woman pouring water out of an urn, so it looks ridiculous when it shoots across the pond. This is about 2' higher than the pump, so I have tried to take that into account. I am going to order a Pondmaster Mag Drive 12, which at 3' will move 880 gph, so that should be about more enough, but not overkill...I think. More is better? I don't imagine that is too much more. I'll get a diverter that allows me to adjust the flow. Since the part that the tubing connects to on my fountain measures 1/2" I am also going to order a multi-hose adapter (link below, it is at the top of the diagram) to connect the 3/4" tubing to the fountain. I don't see any other way to get 3/4" tubing to connect to a 1/2" pipe. It would be really nice if I could order all these parts from 1 place, but apparently that is not possible. I searched the Hansgrohe website for the closest dealer...I went there and the people were incredibly knowledgeable. They had displays and it helped to see the products. They knew about parts that I would not have figured out on my own. I highly recommend that approach. Time was money for me so I ordered from them...but when I compared my final bid with faucetdirect.com (where I order fixtures from often) the plumbing supply place was very competitively priced. This forum gave me the knowledge to ask the right questions, but it was great to talk to someone in person. I usually do all my research on the web, so this was a departure for me! Good luck!

I'd like to know how they installed the vanity in he first place. All I can think is that they left the extension off until the vanity was installed and then glued it into the fitting in the wall. The correct answer would be to cut out drywall, drill holes in studs and get it where it should be. Easier option would be to put a 3" filler on left of vanity so that you have room to cut pipe, install elbow and move to the back. It would then be easy to drill a couple studs in back and get it where it belongs. As for the tub, perhaps the drain can be swiveled to the left and extended out. The pesky overflow is a little less forgiving.

The way the internals of plumbing work is not rocket science, and long lasting finishes and excellent quality internal parts are features of even moderate cost fixtures. So don't confuse spending a lot of money with "best." There are many moderately priced fixtures that will perform just as well as pricy ones...and a US-based company may have replacement parts more readily available when you need them in 10-20 years than some exotic item from, say, a small city in Italy. Look for name brand manufacturers that have been doing business in the U.S. for a long time and who offer lifetime warranties. Look at the styles you like without regard to price. Look at reviews after you narrow your choices down. And if the fixtures you like don't cost an arm and a leg, don't feel you made a wrong choice.
