What an Estate Sale!!!!

This was posted on two Garden Junk forums, the photos of the sale items are incredible. I wish I lived in TX.

Lots of dishes among all the other treasures too. Hey Luvs, I saw two little rabbit statues!

That is AMAZING! I have never seen so much stuff in my life. I wonder how the prices are?? Some very unusual things. Wish I could go!!

Most basic things already said. My own experience? Some are wonderful and will not only get your adrenalin up and send you home with some things not available anywhere else, but will also give you the chance to see the insides of beautiful old homes in your area. I have bought lovely old mirrors, patio furniture, prints, dishes, and even basic pots & pans at estate sales. These can be put on by the family and friends, or by an antique store or company. And even though some complain about higher prices by a company-run sale, they are usually very well organized, with numbers given out at the door one hour before sale begins and orderly entry. They have change and they have 'docents' in each room to facilitate your purchase, as well as to answer questions. On the flip side, as some Californios already mentioned, anyone can put in an ad and call it an estate sale. If I decide to move and sell a lot of my furniture to cut down on having to move it, I might list it as an estate sale. I see nothing wrong with that. If I go to a sale and I find a great old chair or a dresser or even some yard equipment that the seller doesn't want to take with them, I don't care what they call it. Here's my check/I'll go pull up my truck! But also, they can be way over-priced, ill-run, and a free-for-all that can be frightening, as the lady with the Coach handbag and diamond earrings starts fighting with the lady in the sweats and athletic shoes over the crystal chandelier. People sometimes lose their decency in their lust to get a deal. Come early, wear comfortable clothes, put your money in your pocket (so you don't struggle with your purse or worse--knock something off a table with your purse as someone bumps you) and maybe carry a cloth tote for small items. Keep your sense of humor, be prepared to make a quick decision, have a plan for pick-up if you find something big, and have checks as well as enough cash to do what you need to do. If you find something you want, pick it up. Or pull the tag and take it straight to the cashier so no one else gets that antique lamp while you are wandering around. But do go. Try it. Make your own decision about whether it's fun or infuriating. Red

"I just know it's probably from the 1940's & most likely costume jewelry." You may be able to get big bucks for the stuff. Bakelite and Lucite vintage jewelry is quite collectible. Certain styles of the era are popular even it it is not true Bakelite. Google some of the places that sell it online and contact them. I would try to get another estate sale company in to go through things and see if there are any items worth it to be put up for auction. Do not rely on just that one estate sale company to give you advice. Way back when..........when my grandfather died, my mother did a bunch of rummage sales. It barely put a dent in the amount of stuff my grandfather had saved like a packrat. (Depression Era guy.) Then, my mom had someone come in to look at the stuff. This auction woman pawed through the stuff and found some valuable stuff that had gone unrecognized. For instance, my grandfather had a shoebox full of pens he had saved. My mom had put 50 cents on it for the rummage sales. No one bought it. The auction woman found a pen in there called *Big Red* from the late '20s and it sold at auction for a LOT of money. (This was before they reissued the reproductions) A little plastic box turned out to be an Art Deco celluloid cigarette holder. $$$$. A can opener was vintage Harley Davidson issue. It was sent to a store out East on consignment and fetched a pretty penny. I could go on and on. My point being that you could have treasure trove of collectibles. If you do not have the time or the knowledge of collectibles, have someone come in to look over the stuff again. There are places who will list things on eBay for you for a percentage of what it sells for. One persons junk is another man's treasure. My one cousin is always on the lookout at sale for old rusty, vintage tools she uses for decoration. She just cringes when at estate sales she is told "Oh yeah, we had a lot of old tools. They were all rusty and beat up, so we threw them out before the sale." Some things are only valuable to certain individuals. When my uncle died, there was an old, floor model radio in nice wood cabinet. My brother removed the guts from it and was going to use the nice Art Decor cabinet. Another cousin (who is into vintage radios) went ballistic finding this out, as it turns out the vacuum tubes that were tossed out and hauled away in the dumpster, were valuable to collectors who use them to recondition old radios, and worth waaaaay more that that crappy cabinet was. BTW, if there is a lot of stuff Goodwill and similar organizations will come to your house to pick everything up. They will give you a receipt for taxes.

I agree, great score. Also agree about just dropping a pot of something down into them for the remainder of the season. I just did this with two of my terracotta urns, a plastic container of white petunias in each. The petunia pots were on sale at a local nursery and were still vigorous and healthy. I'm surprised that it's been several weeks and I have managed to keep them looking that way. As far as not having much light at your front entrance, it may be the very thing that suits some flowers. Ask at your local nursery for suggestions.

Love that buffet! You should probably figure out what kind of finish it has before doing anything. I have an old hutch with the same silvery marks I think, although it's hard to tell from a photo. Do they sort of scrape off with a fingernail? After blaming my kids for splattering milk on it repeatedly (it always came back), I decided it was just the in finish. If it's shellac, you can sometimes rub them out with denatured alcohol. The woodworking forum will be really helpful on this. Some finishes (like shellac if it's not too far gone) can actually be softened up with their solvent and re-smeared without introducing other chemicals that can have unpredictable results.

That is beautiful, but sooooo SAD!! Can you imagine family members not wanting any of those things....especially the musical instruments or the pictures??? I'm trying to weed out some of my "good stuff", and am hoping that what is left will go to homes with a family member!!

I read the story behind this, that the owner died and the son has had the mansion locked up for the last 25 yrs. A caretaker has lived on the property. Now everything is for sale, and prices for everyone on stuff. Some Garden junkers might get great deals on their sort of thing. I'm betting much of the dishes and smaller glass items may not be priced high either. I'm sure Sale Day is going to be a total madhouse with soooo many folks there, including Dealers who'll be mad to scoop up things for later resale.

Karen, where's the story located? I would like to read it. Strange to keep it locked up for 25 yrs! Must have lots of money!!!!

good morning folks... i'm headed to Schulenburg, TX to help set up a fabulous estate sale... i've already spent one day working on it and it is a mind-boggling estate... the occupant died 25 years ago and her son locked the doors and returned to his out of state home. there was a caretaker, electricity was on, ALL the phones were still connected... it is clean... amazingly it looks like someone just lived there yesterday. anyhow... 7000+ square feet of treasures!!! plus a full basement... completely jam-packed with stuff... plus several out-buildings... i'm having SOOOOOOOO much fun! the house is a mansion with stained glass windows everywhere... bevel glass pocket doors inside... pocket doors everywhere... transoms (with stained glass) on almost every interior door... a FORMAL nursery and playroom for the children... just way too much to mention... if anyone wants to take a peek here's a link to the website (of the estate sale company...>) www.margiebeeglesales.com after opening the site, select "upcoming sales" which will open the pages with photos...

Well that is just sad--someone should have been enjoying all those wonderful treasures for the last 25 years! Why in the world would you just lock the doors and leave it all for 25 years? I could see a year maybe if you were super upset and just could not deal with it--but 25!

Yes, Karen, I spotted those bunnies too. So many neat things there. They had lots of dishes--must have entertained allot. I love that heart shaped wicker rocker. Would love to go through all the Christmas decorations too.

That would almost be overwhelming. I am sure some dealers will get there early and take the majority of it. I can't imagine doing estate sales. My friend Linda put me on a mailing list for some local ones. I haven't gone yet, but she tells me you can get some really good deals. She often goes the last day at the end of the sale and gets many things for free.

I live close enough to get there in a couple of hours...come on down!!!!!! We have a pick-up and a big trailer!!

That is going to be an amazing sale. I think it's very sad also that everything that lady loved is being sold. And it is so strange that the house has been locked up for 25 yrs. I sure would love to go there just to see everything.
