Bidet Toilet Attachment - Changes Needed Due to Bad Back

Hi, my back has deterioriated severely, turning right or left I just cant do any longer use, so we just purchased two new Kohler comfort height toilets, which we had in our last home and liked.

I was thinking of purchasing a bidet attachment for toilet hygiene. Has anyone used one of these. I know nothing about them and wonder about their usefullness and ease of installation.

we cannot put in a separate toilet due to space and budget constraints. So we thought one of these attachments would be helpful?

Once you have a bidet seat, or Washlet, you can't go back.
It's just too nice.

I had chemo and radiation last Fall, and the warm water wash was a life saver.
The doctors told me that my skin was looking twice as good as their other patients after the same amount of time as the other patients on radiation.

The cleanliness factor is nice, and since you really don't need paper, save some money that way too.
No plugging the bowl either.
And you don't get any cleaner then washing with water.

Heck, when I've been rolling in dirt, I'm not going to try to knock it off with a cotton towel.
I'm hoping in the shower.

By the way, the surgery was in February,
The cancer is gone. Gone I tell you.

I have Toto Washlets in all of my bathrooms. Once you have one, you never want to be without. They work extremely well, and will greatly reduce the use of toilet tissue. The heated toilet seat is an added luxury, which will quickly spoil you.

They are not difficult to install. Anyone who is reasonably handy can do it in under an hour. You do, however, need a GFI electrical outlet within about 3 feet of the toilet. Ideally, it should be down low, somewhere near the back of the toilet.

I agree with those who recommend moving it. Our Master bath shares a wall with our guest room/office and things are audible to say the least! I am looking forward to the day that this is better! I like the 3rd plan from Karenseb the best tho I still wonder about having your clothes so far away from your exit door. I also wonder about moisture and humidity issues with this arrangement. Some days you make multiple trips because of not liking a scarf or forgetting a jacket, etc. and having this extra distance to walk to do those things adds lots of time to your morning. Have you considered having your closet be in the area immediately behind your bedroom wall and putting all of the bathroom into the alcove space keeping the toilet easily accessible? Using Karen's 3rd plan, I would recommend flipping the location of the toilet so it is back to back with your sinks and thus your plumbing costs aren't too outrageous. I also believe that orienting it that way will be easier use ergonomically. (Try walking into a your current bathroom and closing the door, turning around to uh situate yourself and more to see how easy it is to do things versus feeling like you are going against the flow. ;)) It also will mean the toilet won't be so visible when you turn the corner into your closet but is still close enough for "worship time". Doing the walk thru of feeling what is comfortable versus awkward I think will be helpful to you as you sort thru your possibilities. YMMV

When we bought our home in 1976, the master bath had a bidet and toilet. We had no clue how to use the bidet. It had no seat and "hovering" wasn't an option. It looked like a urinal to me. (being from the Midwest). I stuck a fern in it. A couple years later we remodeled and eliminated the bidet. This last Fall, we traveled for 3 weeks thru SE Asia, and in almost every hotel bathroom was a Toto toilet with a washlet. You just turned the little knob on the side and the water would come on (pressure to be determined by how much you opened the valve). After you "evacuated" a little thingie came out and sprayed "those parts" until you turned it off. You could reposition your bottom (lean forward) to wash other parts too! I fell in LOVE! Having had travelers diarrhea and wiping a sore bottom was not a good thing, but blotting was. No special piping, just a splitter off the water inlet to the toilet. Got home and looked up Washlets, and realized that in the tropics, the cold water is always room temp...HOWEVER the water in the states in Winter can get pretty cold, so that is why the washlets need so many more controls to determine the temp of the water spraying on those private parts. I still don't get how a bidet works. Do you have to do your "business" over the toilet then move over to the separate toilet? Do Americans take more showers than Europeans so "cleaning" those girly parts daily happens in the shower rather than over the bidet. I hope no-one thinks I'm being crude here...just very curious. If you have both a toilet and a separate bidet fixture, how do you use them?????? -Babka

The specific model of the two Toto Washlets that are installed in our sister and bother-in-law's home in Kamakura does have that feature, and, being the curious type, I have given it a couple of test drives. Not a feature that I would use even if we had it on ours at home. To be fair, the trial was not apple-to-apples or oranges-to-oranges, because the angle of incidence of the spray from their one-wand Toto Washlet is much closer to horizontal, and the angle of incidence of the spray from our two-wand Inax Clessence is much closer to vertical, than the other. Perhaps I would have liked the oscillating spray more if it were incorporated in a more vertical spray; it is difficult to speculate.

I don't have experience with the Brondell, but I love having an advanced toilet seat. I have 2. Guest drop their jaw and snicker. Oh well. I put my first one in the first bathroom that I remodeled which happened to be the more public bathroom. I got an INAX, top of the line. It is wonderful, but is not distributed to the US any longer. Herringmaven, had a lot of comments on GW over the last few years, on advanced toilet seats. Herringmaven no longer posts, with the Houzz change, I believe I'd seen one or 2 post only, but no longer. I have a Novita for the second bathroom and I like the features but lots of them are really not needed. So your basic seat sounds very practical. I would say you don't need a dryer. I never use it. I just blot dry, it takes too long to blow dry, lol. The warm seat is nice in the winter. The water heating reservoir vs the endless hot water supply is something to consider if you need more time with water irrigation or what ever, but for just general hygiene, the constant hot water flow is not necessary IMO. The wall remote is nice but handheld would be easier sometimes, depending on location for wall remote. And if you have a good place to store the handheld. I can't read my Novita wall remote because it is all digital, with lighting that is not visible if angled wrong from your view. I mounted it below my eye level which is not helpful. My INAX has black print and with raised smooth bumps for the switches for easy access. The Novita has so many options that it really is a waste for me. Deoderizing feature waste of $, I do like having 2 wands. Realize that you will have to sit way back on the seat to access the sprays. Both mine require this and I think it takes getting used to from what I have read on GW. Be sure to really know how your seat will connect to your intake water and to your toilet tank. The INAX was a breeze! Great couplings. While the Novita was much more complicated, though offered a water filter. Good Luck. I would never be without an advanced toilet seat again : )

LOVE my Toto Washlet!! Like Terry said, if you've been rolling around the in the dirt or work up a sweat while exercising, try getting clean with a dry towel. I too have a bad back. Turning side to side is getting harder and harder :( A roll of t-paper lasts forever. Probably 3 months. I finished a roll on April 28 right before we left to go out of town. I've yet to replace the roll. I'm the only one that uses this bathroom. I don't know if you've checked the prices yet but two 1/2 years ago my S300 was $670 from wwww.ewins.com That was the best deal I could find but the prices have gone up. Wonderful WONDERFUL product! Can't sing it's praises enough.
Do a search for Washlet on this site. If the search function is working correctly, you'll find lots of chatter about Toto Washlets :)

I hate to be gross (or even somewhat negative) .... but, how much cleaning do you have to do ? Seems like all those arms and stuff are in the "danger zone". Since I have the world's worst cleaning lady (ie-me) I'm curious what the maintainence is? Pardon me for being gross, but the underside of the back of the toilet seat is sometimes dirty. Is that the case with all the parts of the Washlet? I would love to be less dependent on paper....

cindaloutx, Cleaning a Toto Washlet is no more difficult than with an ordinary toilet seat. The wand (spray arm) retracts completely between uses. It is automatically washed each time before it deploys, and again, each time after it retracts. Once retracted, there are not rough edges or other crevices or crannies for grime to collect. Otherwise cleaning involves no more than wiping down surfaces, just as you would with an ordinary seat. The wand can be extended to check for cleanliness by pressing a button to extend it. If necessary, you can wipe it down, then depress the button again to retract it. That's all there is to it.

If you buy any Toto model above the basic model, the seat will be equipped with a blow dryer which directs a stream of warm air to the appropriate nether regions. After a quick (and optional) blotting with TP, the dryer will have you on your way after only a few seconds.

Since you can't turn side to side, be sure your bidet seat has a remote control. The basic models have an "arm" (which houses the control buttons) that's located on the side of the seat, that would be very difficult for you to use. The high-end models for each brand are equipped with remotes that can be handheld. There are many bidet seat vendors online, some brands to consider are the Toto Washlet, Coco, Inax, and Bio Bidet.

Good luck with your search. Once you've used a bidet seat you'll wonder now you lived without it. BTW, there are many reviews online for the various brands, just do some googling. You can get a nice bidet seat with remote for $450 and up.

The Jasmine is the same model as the S300. I don't know the reason for the different names. That's probably a good price. When I bought mine nearly 3 years ago, I was told ther was fixing to be a price increase.
cindaloutx, check out these videos at Toto.com. Maybe it will answer your questions. Does the retractable wand ever need cleaning? Yes, occassionally and is easily done with a soft cloth. Trying not to reveal TMI (too much information) but I just suffered thru bad stomach virus this weekend. My Washlet made made all the difference in the world :) springvillegardens, here is a photo of where I have my remote installed. No reach for it. With my back issues, I don't know what I'd do without my Washlet, not to mention how much cleaner and fresher it makes you feel. You have a choice of two rear washes, one a forceful steam and the other not as forceful and covers more area. Both are adjustable as is the water temp and seat temp. One front wash. Adjustable as well. Dryer has three temps. Also a deoderizer that automatically goes off 1 minutes after you get up. Or you can turn it on as needed. There is a power saver option. I have mine set for the features to be "on" from 9am to 12 midnight. I would hate to have to choose which bathroom feature is my favorite, the Washlet or airtub. Both make my life much more comfortable.

Hi I have bought four toilet bidet attachments from ProperWash.com. Proper Wash bidets are easy to easy to install and works really well. I bought one for myself and two for my parents house and one for my aunt. They all love it! By the way, I bought PW 100 model because it's very affordable and works well.
