Cleaning our 6' deep fireplace chimney was a Flop
Comments (5)Repairing the Old Chimney Cap took a turn that I feel will work and was the best option. Disassembled I saw no reason to rebuild the excessive cap vs half that was a 3 hr task. Braces and all went well except for drilling (2 hrs) in the coated sheet metal and my SS braces. The coating has to have hardened the metal. Finally I thought to use self taping screws, a slower speed and oil. 1. The 70s double faced fireplace has had a steel back in one side making it single faced since the 70s for heat vs looks. 2. The 14â damper in the 14â i.d. dia chimney pipe stays 80% closed to resist heat loss w/o smoking. Does a higher cap above roofs affect the draw (1âÂÂof pipe then cap)? 3. Reducing should draw as well or there is sheet-metal that can be exchanged with expanded metal if needed on the cap. 4. I feel I saw some creosote in the cap but h/n seen the âÂÂBlack Glazeâ in the pipe. I hope that is another project off my âÂÂNo End Of Experiments And PM ChoresâÂÂ. I have to haul off old experiments monthly to make some progress. Some of the PMs will have to go to others with my challenge of getting âÂÂQuality WorkâÂÂ. Attached is a pic before it makes a quick trip back onto the roof. PS. Ewalk, I have not found one locally for 14â i.d.. A wire brush on 10â of PVC has always swept the 6â but slower/more energy now. LOL. It was at my side vs this experiment to eliminate time/energy. A rod or pipe should work w/o a problem or time lost. Flakey soot is all I have ever seen that comes off with no resistance vs motion. Thanks/Take Care!...See MoreDecember ritual. Deep cleaning. Am I the only one?
Comments (18)We've only been in this house a little over a year, and this year and last, we hosted Thanksgiving. So, November is deep cleaning month. DH even washed the windows this year! All of that deep cleaning turned up even more (!) repair projects. Turns out what I thought was a smudge on the bottom of one door frame is actually blistering paint from the wood rotting, and we found several windows that needed recaulking. So the "deep cleaning" just went on and on! It was really nice, though, to have everything perfectly clean. After Thanksgiving, we did the cleanup from that, and I put up the tree a few days later. We're planning to have guests off and on through the holidays, so all we've got to do now is just touch it up every week. Ditto that on the pet hair! We have cats. And we have mostly white trim and baseboards, white grout on the tile, AND we live in the country. At least we have a paved driveway, but most all of my neighbors have patures and crops, so the mowing creates a HUGE amount of dust and pollen. Some days, I feel like I could vaccuum every day and it wouldn't matter. I find that keeping down the clutter and little piles of stuff that DH and I can both generate spontaneously helps the most....See MoreAdvice on Self-Clean Wolf E Series w/ Miele speed oven above

Comments (54)In our old house, I had to give my dog a bath in my kids' bathroom. She would stay in there to dry for a few hours, so washing those walls was imperative! I read Marie Kondo's book about organizing your home. It was a game changer for me. Reduced clutter and simplifying your home goes a LONG way towards cutting down on cleaning time. Still, I too am neurotic about a clean home, We just moved into a new build and I underestimated how much added time craftsman style trim adds to my dusting! Typcially, I try to wipe down all surfaces (sinks, kitchen counter) each night. I have three kids (two boys who have "lightsaber wars" while going to the bathroom....don't ask!) so scrubbing toilets happens twice per week at a minimum. Floors get cleaned weekly. I wipe down cabinets and trim as needed. We have a lot of dark wood so dusting is far more frequent than I'd like!...See MoreMaxine Angella Turnbull
