If you're bored, here's some pix of some old things in my stash. Maybe some will end up in a tablescape in the future, should be able to work with these somehow.

My 1908 Whippet Calendar Plate

Reed & Barton pedestal plate with greyhounds and rabbits on it. Apparently had a handle at one time that got broken off. Found in antique shop many years ago. Full photo and close-up of top.

But I did "a bad, bad thing" the other day! This was in TERRIBLE condition when I got it. Not merely tarnished, the silver plating was mostly worn away. I know I should have had it re plated but never did with the expense. So I decided last week to try the Rustoleum Silver Metallic spray paint. I'm pleased with results as before you could barely make out the dogs or the rabbits on it.

Karen, you KNOW I love looking at anything that has bunnies on it. ;o) Those AC bunny trays are gorgeous. Love the shape of them so much as well as the shine. Don't suppose you could make stepping stones or plaques from those, huh? Just joking--I know they are much too nice and expensive for that. ;o)

So cool that you have a 1908 calendar plate. Did you find it at an antique store too? Why do you say you did a bad bad thing by painting your dish? It looks really nice now--are you thinking it detracts from the antique value? It probably does, but I'm sure you weren't planning to sell it anyway--so might as well have it look pretty so you can enjoy it.

Thanks for sharing some "eye candy" with us. Hope your back is feeling better too.

I really like all of your pictures. It impresses me that you find so many whippet/greyhound items. Your Arthur Court dishes are lovely. The second bunny is my favorite.

I never have seen mealy bugs on anything except indoor plants or greenhouse plants. I'm not saying you don't have mealy bugs, just that they are more of an indoor pest that an outdoor one and they are hard to combat outdoors. Different pests have different kinds of life cycles. Mealy bugs only live 6 or 8 weeks, I think, but have numerous life cycles per year. Because mealy bugs are related to scale, you can treat for them the same way that you treat plants for scale....by spraying the plants during the DORMANT season with dormant oil. I wouldn't spray even a superfine summer-weight oil in the kind of heat we're having now because it could damage or even kill the plants. You might try spraying the mealybugs themselves with neem oil. You might try spraying with insecticidal soap, especially during this week's cool spell. When you have a small infestation of mealybugs on a houseplant, you often can take care of them by wiping or dabbing the bugs with a swab or cottonball dipped in rubbing alcohol. Jay, who posts here as Elkwc, has been experimenting with spraying some of his plants with rubbing alcohol. If you want to talk with him about how he's doing it in terms of strength of the alcohol and frequency of the spraying, just start a new thread and put Jay's name in the title so he'll be sure to read it. There probably are chemical insecticides that are used for mealybugs, but I don't use chemical insecticides so am not current on them. Certain insects live a part of their life cycle in the soil, but you can't get away from them by moving your herb garden, because they'll just move to the new locations. For grasshoppers, the best solution is Nolo Bait or Semaspore, but they are most effective only when applied at the right temperatures in the spring (April-May) and when grasshoppers are in the younger instars. The best solution for all pest problems is to build up a healthy population of carnivore insects (aka beneficial insects) to eat the herbivore insects, and to encourage the presence of reptiles, apmhibians and birds because they help control pests too. One of my biggest garden helpers is the wild birds. I feed them a little bird seed and keep a birdbath full of clean water for them, and they reward me by sticking around and eating grasshoppers and other pests. Healthy soil will contain microorganisms that help control pests. Healthy soil needs regular additions of organic matter like compost. Dawn

Lee, you should get a scooter too, then you and DH could race thru the mall. LOL. I should use one but I'm so sure I'd take out a display (probably a glass one at that) that I'd rather limp along. LOL. Betty, I love all your 'plans', great list. Even down to some day becoming a bag lady. You've got things covered and lots of fun shopping with all of us to boot. I think that is just wonderful your little Eli has grown his own watermelons. And heck, he loves kale. I'd like to meet this boy! Hope you are getting strength back from that awful flu. Sounds like Alfred didn't catch it, that's great news. Luvs, that's my favorite Smiley. I tend to open mouth and insert foot, so I should wear a button with him on it. I want to go shopping SOOOO bad to those stores that are a bit of drive (Marshalls, plus opposite direction a TJ Maxx and new Hobby Lobby beside it). But am having a time this past week just making it around the house and taking care of my Dad. My legs and back are REALLY starting to p__s me off. My husband gave me a beautiful string of pearls with a saphire clasp for christmas last year...guess I'm old lady :) But then my newest piece of jewelry is probably 1950 with most of it being 1880's...so perhaps I"m just an old lady at heart :) I love jewelry with history. Sell it and enjoy the vacation...and know that the person who buys it is probably someone like me who will cherish it as much as the original family member of yours did. As to purging...well frankly, I like stuff :oP I love all the stuff ya'll donate to charity because I haunt the goodwill and habitat store looking for it. I use it daily and it makes me feel good. But that said...I rather enjoy purging too, but perhaps that's linked to the fact that I bought a huge house full of someone elses "stuff". I happily donate items to habitat. I like the tax deduction, and I love the feeling of doing something positive for a charity I support. I also do put things outside with a "free" sign (because I think it's cute how people will take ANYTHING!...no one does that in Alaska) but most of those are children's things (which must be taken during school hours so DS does not see it LOL). That reminds me...I have a slide for free to put out tomorrow when he's napping LOL My one hoarded...hang on, I don't know, thing is my son's cloths and cloths I purchased for a set of twins we lost. I thought we were going to adopt or have another child and now that we've give up on that I have to open the boxes. I have literally dozens of large boxes full of lovely cloths, regular stuff, and brand new things for the babies we expected. I know I have to get to that stuff...it takes up a huge amount of space, both physically and emotionally, but I haven't quite gotten into the zone to be able to do that one. Maybe we should make a pledge...those of us who have some purging to do...I'm peronally going to get through those cloths and give them to someone who needs them within the first quarter of 2011. ICF I am so sorry to hear that. As a matter of fact I was not given good treatment at our local ER...sigh. I was sent home and they actually told my DH that I didn't have a concussion ! I had been out cold ! I was sent home with a face that looked like a partially peeled eggplant. My lower lip was ripped inside and they ignored it even though I kept crying and saying my mouth hurt. Needless to say I was admitted 2 days later with a severe infection and temps 104. 3 day hospital stay and my wonderful surgeon was furious with the ER. Unfortunately my mouth couldn't be repaired as too much time had gone by. I was just lucky that my brain injury healed itself as no one took me seriously on that score. Our medical communities bear a lot of responsibility for the poor recovery of some patients. I am sorry that you didn't get a great outcome but I am so glad for you that you have a fantastically supportive family. c

hi2, I've long haunted antique malls and a big show here in the Fall. then there's eBay of course, but I don't get all that much off there any more. I've got around 300 Whippet/Greyhound statues in my collection. But there is sure a LOT on eBay. I look thru both greyhound and whippet listings almost every night just to pass the time when I can't sleep.
Arthur Court stuff is lovely but usually more than I want to pay, like Fitz & Floyd. Luckily my BF is good about getting stuff for birthday and Xmas in these.

Luvs, I figured some folks would cringe that I didn't get that pedestal plate properly redone, but if someone really wanted to, the paint could be removed and it still could be re-plated I'm sure. I'm not going to sell it tho, you're right about that. Just glad I can finally display it, sure was ugly before but a "must have" when I saw it. Never have I seen another like it either on eBay.
The calendar plate came from an antique show I went to. Actually I bought it for a dear friend, much older than me, who was my "mentor" when I started in whippets and showing. She died at age 90. She was born in 1908 and loved the plate. I inherited her whippet things and so got the plate back. Also have an old mug with the same dog head on it, tho mug is orangy color and doesn't match plate at all as a set.

Karen, that is a sweet story about the whippet plate returning to you. I know you are happy with how your pedestal plate turned out, and it looks great. Can you describe what the finish looks like in person?

Lee, I like the silver metallic finish from Rustoleum tho haven't yet tried Krylons to see if any real difference.
Hard to describe but the finish is shiny tho not glossy like real silver is. I'd be picky what I tried it on probably. Tho still think the faux fruit is a good possibilty for it. going to get some at Dollar Store to try one of these days. I don't know why the photos have a bluish cast for this sprayed pedestal, but it is closer to what the rabbit trays are. Arthur Court stuff is aluminum of some sort, boy are they heavy pieces tho.

Karen, That is such a wonderful story about the 1908 Whippet plate. I know your friend must have enjoyed it very much. The Arthur Court trays are gorgeous also. And you can think that you may have saved the pedestal plate by buying it since it was in such bad shape. It looks very pretty now.
