White Shirts
Comments (3)Hi John, and welcome! Posting your query in the laundry forum might be helpful too, but here are a few ideas for you. Wash your shirts in the hottest water the fabric will stand. No cold water washes -- no matter what the tag on the shirt says. Be sure to wash your white shirts only with other white and light-colored items -- sometimes dyes will transfer from dark laundry onto lighter items. Don't overload the washer -- a crammed load doesn't get very clean. Try hot water. For white whites, I would use a detergent with bleach alternative (the additive is Oxyclean, not Clorox) or I would add some Oxyclean to the load with my regular detergent. Many people find that name brand detergent, like Tide, cleans better than lesser-priced detergents -- but your mileage may vary. Don't use more than the recommended amount of detergent -- too much can lead to a build-up of detergent on clothes, leaving them a little dingy. Finally, people with really hard water -- or who have iron in their water -- often find that their light-colored clothes get dingy or even rusty colored. There's not much besides getting a water softener to deal with this challenge. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: THS Laundry Forum...See MoreYellowing Underarms on White Shirts
Comments (22)Here is a testimonial to the Sun Oxy bucket stuff. You can also purchase it at Dollar General stores. I went to a yard sale and there was a huge bag of white t shirts that would fit my grandsons, FREE. BAG OF RAGS. I brought them home. In a 5 gallon bucket I put in a scoop of the Sun Oxy powder, and the hottest water my tap would give me. Dissolved it and put in a wad of t shirts. I have a basement, and no one but me goes down there. So I had the bucket down there. Every time I went down I checked on the shirts. Some came clean overnight and I took them out and swished the others in the bucket of now cold water they were in. I actually ended up leaving a few for about a week. (since I forgot about them) Needless to say, I am sold on Sun Oxy for old yellow stains on whites. I gave my grandsons piles of t shirts that looked like new. In the future, I suggest a washing technique I read here years ago. A woman stated her mom always washed whites twice. Once in cold water, once in hot. The cold water gets out any stains that need the cold treatment of washing, and the hot took out any others. I tried it and have never went back. With a traditional washer and now with an HE. My whites have never been whiter and brighter. So soak in the oxy, do a wash cycle in cold, one in hot, and you will need sunglasses to fold them. :) NOTE: for safety sake, if you have small kids or pets, don't leave a bucket of oxy water around for them to drink, fall in, etc!!!!...See MoreYellow under arm stain removal
Comments (20)I used to have a serious problem with staining shirts after wearing them once. The antiperspirant would also build up and get hard in the underarm. I had to stop wearing white shirts all together, or anything light colored. Through the years, it was getting worse, probably because they made them stronger and stronger. I switched to deodorants which just didn't work for me, I would have odor in a half hour. Tried different antiperspirants and nothing fixed the staining or build up. Ends up, it is body chemistry mixing with the aluminum in the antiperspirant. So after trying everything, I finally found something the works and doesn't cause any problems with staining. I now use Crystal Body Deodorant. No odor and no staining, plus it's natural. Antiperspirants, as far as I'm concerned, are just not healthy. The main ingredient is aluminum....See MoreHelp spilled hot tea on white pants and light blue tee.
Comments (15)Of course I had been very busy and unable to wash the pants. Well, as soon as I walked in the door today I ran a load that include my pants, several pair of white socks two tiny white washcloths and then sat down with a nice cup of tea. Then I went to take a shower. Yuck the water was brown. I live in NYC with some of the best quality water in the world and I had just drank a cup of tea made with this water and washed my favorite pants in brown water. I feel like these pants are cursed, never mind I drank that water. I live in a multi family building and the building may have turned off the water to fix a plumbing issue which usually results in brown water for less than a minute but the water is not running clear. I can't rewash the pants and I cant take a shower. When the water is clear again I will wash in cold water and hope for the best. Sorry I just needed to rant....See Morelittle_drummer
