Comments (17)Oh Seil, that list is heartbreaking. IâÂÂm sure losing all those seedlings youâÂÂve babied along is a big blow. I see names of so many of your minis that IâÂÂve been admiring through your pictures on the deceased list...so sad. I did see your shopping post, and looks like you have picked out some great new roses to enjoy. I laughed when I read on the other post that you were considering Neptune for its âÂÂNâÂÂ. I came very close to buying Quietness to have a âÂÂQâ even though I knew it would grow way too big for the spot I had available. I only lost ten roses over the winter, 8 OGRs and 2 Austins. They were all new to me last year and nothing uncommon or hard to replace. Even so, it was disappointing. I canâÂÂt imagine having losses to the degree some of you have suffered. Comments (28)Putting the grates in the dishwasher might allow some rust to occur. There is usually a little hole on the back that is unprotected. Not a big thing as it could be wiped off. Also the strong alkali used in some dishwashing detergents could possibly dull the porcelain finish. Of course that's why they clean so well, they eat up the grease.. Strong ingredients would be sodium carbonate, and stronger are potassium or sodium hydroxide (lye). Over time they might have an effect on the finish. (They eat aluminum- especially if the aluminum is touching cast iron) I also think that the smaller burner size of the Bluestar smallest burner is much better than just lowering to a simmer the larger burners of any brand. I think CC made a mistake by not having at least one small burner. And that is not necessarily about hot handles, or burning paper plates or 'clicking of ignitors- it's about cooking, control, and smaller pan sizes, which a lot of us have and use. I looked at some of the specs given by Trevor about C.C. compared to a Bluestar and I winced. He used the acronym FTRT (failed to reach temperature) on a large open pot with a gallon of water on the small Bluestar burner. Yet, thank goodness, I would not want that burner to produce a boil under such conditions! That's the whole idea. Fewer BTU's are sometimes better. Of course that was with the burners set on high with a 9 1/2 inch pot size. I don't want to bore too many of you, but just look at the photos of the CC on simmer (the large burner now that is the only burner offered). Lots of blue going on. No way is this going to simmer as low as the smaller burner that Bluestar has. A cook on a Culinarian is going to have to watch that steel cut oatmeal much more carefully, especially if they're cooking for one. And if you're cooking in a small 6 inch pot, you don't always want to turn the heat all the way down on your big burner. First of all, it won't be a simmer for a small amount of food, (this is true for chocolate, and many delicate sauces) and secondly, it you want to turn the heat up, yes it will cook, but much of the heat just goes outside the pan. Comments (11)Hi Brian, I've been researching hood choices casually for months on the Gardenweb kitchen and appliance forums. Only lately has our remodel taken off and forced me to get serious about a final decision. From the threads I've studied Prestige, Independent and Modern Aire seemed to have the most satisfied customers. (Abbaka may be excellent as well.) Vent-A-Hood had some happy owners but also had a large number of negative reviews--so negative that I ended up crossing them off the list of possibilities. If the reviews were to be believe VAH's magic lung system is fluff/hype and not up to the task of serious ventilation. It's also apparently noisy. This is exactly the opposite of what the salesman at my local appliance store said, but I've learned to trust these forums more than the advice of the stores in my area. I suspect I'll end up appealing to Trevor for help on the hood dilemma when I purchase the BlueStar 36" in the next few weeks. If the larger capture area on the Prestige can compensate for the lack of 27" depth, then I'll likely go that direction. Having said that, the Modern Aire hoods are gorgeous, seem universally loved by their owners, and have custom options other hoods lack. Darnit. This really is a tough decision. MA would be much more expensive, but I don't want stir-fry fumes wafting through my home. If the 24" Prestige can't capture adequately for the BlueStar's grill and 22K burners, it will have to be MA.
