Cleaning glass on dining room table

Hi. I had a piece of glass cut for my dining room table. I thought I would love it, but it always looks dirty. I have used every imaginable glass cleaner, but there is still a "film" all over the table. It looks terrible! I think what is happening is the dusting spray residue that was on the table from dusting it before I got the glass, keeps "building up" or something on the bottom part of the glass making it look cloudy and streaky. Is there anything I can do to remove the dusting spray residue from the table so the glass will be clean? I am ready to throw out the glass, but it's such a big piece, I can barely lift it! It's not like I can just put it in the trash can, ya know? Thanks for any advice you have.

Have you tried plain old full strength ammonia? I used it to clean a glass stove top and some old casserole dishes that I had never been able to get clean with any commercial cleaner.

Ammonia worked so well that it full strength, it has replaced my heaviest duty cleaner and in various dilutions is my floor cleaner, counter cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, shower wall cleaner and even cleaning solution for my hot water carpet cleaner.

For most light duty household tasks, you just use a dab of it in a half gallon of water so the odor isn't even any big deal.

For a really stubborn film like on your table, try wiping it on full strength with a soaked wash rag, let it sit for a minute and wipe off.

I was putting on a bunch of window film taking great care cleaning window panes one at time after the initial cleaning to perfection. The maid shows up so I explain I'm trying to make sure no spec of dust is landing on the film or the window... Maid knew no vacuuming or making dust... I go to stick on a cut of film and the furniture spray mist starting hissing 30 feet away .... within very few seconds it was all over the window glass and film from maybe 30 feet away, man that was fast! Needless to say that panel looks bad but already cut and stuck and not cheap. I now hate furniture polish.

Coffee filters (they're dust free and cheap) and a few drops or maybe 1/4 teaspoon of baby shampoo mixed in a quart of distilled water .. in a spray bottle sure does clean windows well here.

You need to re-amalgamate the finish. Find out what the finish is and what solvent will "melt" it...then flow some of that on gently with a paint brush and let everything melt together. The trick is to find what the finish is. Anyideas how old the table is? or if it has ever been refinished? Linda C

Am I crazy to put dining room table against one side of the room?

Have you considered putting the table against the window the long way (see sketch in blue). There would be 40" of walk space if the hearth is 18" into the room. An indoor/outdoor is a great option that will anchor the table, add color as well as be the base for the room. I would also install either a long rod with stationary window panels on either side or short rods on either side of the window. The short rods would also have stationary panels. This will visually complete the windows. I would put an accent chair in the corner on the fireplace wall by the entry with an art piece above. A built-in bookshelf cabinet could be installed to the right of the firelace. Add a focal piece above the fireplace and you're all set!

Does it look good for a little while then get streaky? I had glass fronts on a cabinet in the living room that did that after about a day. I also had a smoker in the house! I think it was the smoke. I used a Mr. Clean Magic eraser and then polished (lots of elbow grease) with CHEAP paper towels not the nice ones. This kept it clean the longest. I think cleaning products leave a residue that attracks dust and smoke.

I don't like to work hard. Rubbing alcohol is all I use for glass.
I don't seem to have problems with static electricity, but if you do maybe use the treated clothes for monitor screens, etc.

Several years ago we had window tint installed on our south facing windows, and the installer used Johnson and Johnson Baby shampoo (just a couple drops) in a spray bottle with water. Works like a charm on all glass and we smoke. I stopped using papertowels. I buy the end of a roll of newsprint from the local newspaper (cheap cheap $2 or three for $5)

Do you have the little foam dots on the underside of the glass to keep it from touching the wood?
