Do I have room for a 36" cast iron shower pan?
Comments (0)My bathroom is 5' x 10'. We will be replacing the 5' acrylic shower surround with a Kohler cast iron shower pan and tiled walls. The measurement from the back wall sheetrock to the edge of the shower surround is 34". I'm trying to fit in the 36" Salient pan, which attaches to the studs, but the toilet creates a problem. The toilet center is 17" from the shower curb. Toilet center to vanity is 18", giving me a 35" toilet space. With the 36" pan, the toilet center would be 15" from the curb so it would not be centered in the toilet space. I am looking at the Kohler San Souci compact elongated toilet, which has a width of 16 1/2" at the tank, 3" narrower than our current toilet, to make the toilet feel roomier if I lose 2" to the shower pan. I also want to use a stationary glass shower panel alongside the toilet and a hinged door. The alternative is to use the Kohler 34" Bellwether pan, which is the perfect size, but I don't like it as much as the Salient....See MoreCast iron shower bases MUST use shower doors with a track
Comments (30)We are installing a 36 x 60 cast iron shower receptor and frameless bypass sliding doors. The glass company said they drill into cast iron all the time and it's not a problem. As a preventive measure, I will ask them to add silicone to the underside of the sill mounted center guide to seal out water and prevent rust. Thank you to everyone who commented on this thread - your input has been helpful and informative....See MoreCast iron tub to walk in shower
Comments (2)I had never heard of such a thing - but here's a youtube advertising a company that retrofits an opening into an existing tub - e..g. essentially just cutting an opening into the side of the tub. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t72teDgFOEE I have no idea what the cost is or whether it actually is a viable solution but in theory it seems to be a relatively easy solution since a tub shower combo is already waterproofed for a shower. I am assuming you want to use as a shower rather than to take a bath since getting up and down in a tub presents problems. In the meantime while you wait install grab bars - these need to be attached to studs for maximum safety because otherwise they can be ripped from the wall if you lose your balance. You can also get one of the rotating seats which sit on the edge of the tub - you sit and then use it to rotate your feet into the tub. Make sure that you have non-slippery surface on the bottom - my tub/shower combo was quite slippery. You should also put in a sturdy chair with a back if you have balance issues....See Moreextra tall door for cast iron shower pan
Comments (3)I have a Kohler shower pan, and I had blocking put at each end wall for swinging French doors. I love my setup and I love my Kohler pan. Check as Millworkman suggests. Hi Millworkman! My shower doors are still great....See Morebreezygirl
