After several weeks of research, we are ready to purchase our appliances for the kitchen renovation. We found the range, refrigerator, DW and microwave we wanted at Warehouse Discount Center. The savings were about $1500 on the total over the local Lowes, Home Depot and Wholesale Appliance Center.

My question is has anyone used Warehouse Discount Center and if so, were you pleased with them?

Actually about $2000 less. I forgot about sales tax that would have to be paid here.

DH just reminded me we are not saving sales tax, just deferring it until next April 15. Oh.

If your reason for buying appliances out of state is to avoid the taxes that pay for services rendered in your state of residence, I wonder if you have considered that the out of state company you patronize will pay a portion of your dollars toward providing services that will be of no benefit to you, your family or neighbors. The right thing to do is to pay the taxes based on the state in which you live. Supporting local businesses that contribute to the economy of your community is something you should be proud of, as opposed to paying for services in another state that has its own method of assessing taxes to fund its own needs.

I recently purchased a SQ washer at US Appliance and was pleased with their service. The first washer shipped was damaged, I called and they picked up and reshipped without any problems. The shipping time quoted was three weeks but we received them in less than two.

From recent personal experience with both an NXR from Costco and a new fridge, what you need is an appliance dolly and help to move the things. An appliance dolly can be rented and is definitely worth it. If you have an older home, check the width of the doors. Remember to measure between the stops rather than measuring the door itself. If you have narrow doors, you may have to remove the oven door from the NXR. (That also lightens the load, too.) A plumber is a good person to have hook up the NXR for you if you are not compentent to do it yourself or if you just want somebody to make sure all is proper wnad without leaks. In some places, the public utilities will provide this service or at least verify the absence of leaks. For a smaller fridge, you might have to remove the door handles or, if you have very narrrow doors and a bigger fridge, you might have to remove the fridge doors to get the unit in the house. Then, you put the doors back on, adjust the leveling, and you are good to go. You might note that Costco sells Whirlppol fridges with "white glove" delivery which takes care of all of that (provided you do not live in Alaska, Hawaii, MOntana, Puerto Rico or Wyoming).

I have made several online purchases but only recently made a large appliance purchase. My faucet I did buy from Homeclick and I received it within a day. It did have a problem and they immediately sent a new one again within a day and issued a call tag for the defective one. The price was better than I could get anywhere locally. Sink was bought online from Home Decor. Price was good and arrived in good shape. I am waiting for delivery of my dishwasher a Miele and Advantium purchased online from U.S. Appliance. Again pricing was a factor. I will know in a few days how well it worked out. So far the most difficult purchase was the range purchased locally which had to be ordered. Dealer screwed up and lost the order. Fortunately I was not on a tight time schedule and I did get a good price. Make sure you do your homework before you order and most purchases should be ok. The way I look at it is that it really is not that much different from the days when people got alot of their stuff by mail order. The internet is kinda like a big electronic Sears catalog.

I've bought from US Appliance and AJ Madison online before without any trouble, as well as an appliance dealer from NJ on Amazon.

The one caveat is that you may need to bring them in from your driveway. Not a problem if you have a hand truck. They're $40 at Harbor Freight :)

schicksal, we were wondering about curbside delivery and may buy a heavy duty hand truck. We will clear out one garage bay to store the appliances in and was wondering if the delivery person would just back up to the bay and off load them there.

Also, we went to a local appliance showroom (Wholesale Appliance Center) and the salesman questioned whether the appliances we found from WDC were new in box or scratch and dent or maybe refurbished. I have asked WDC about this but have not heard back yet.

It all depends on the person who's doing the delivery. I've had it range from curbside = curb to getting things in the house. Typically a box truck will do residential area deliveries and whether it can back in or not also depends on the driver, slope and area.

But a hand truck from Harbor Freight is really cheap and makes quick work of getting things in. All your friends will want to borrow it when they move.

Are you comparing pricing delivered and uninstalled everywhere? What's the warranty situation if you self-install? Did you ask the locals to price match?

I'd be a little concerned about the lag between delivery and installation. Will the seller claim the appliance was perfect on delivery, and problems are your fault?

chisue, our renovation has not begun. The cabinet maker said the cabinets could be ready in six weeks. He and the GC will coordinate this (they have worked together many times). The GC will install and I will ask WDC about this also. Hope they will respond soon. The lag time between delivery and install, even if we order this week should be no more than 8 eight weeks. Of course that does take 2 months off the warranty.

The local place cannot come as low on the prices, especially the GE Profile induction range ($2200/2800). But they discount from the prices shown on the showroom floor.

I've renovated two kitchens--everything was purchased online from AJ Madison--and in one case, I ordered from UK. Never a problem.
