I agree - I read on here about very expensive appliances and problems with them. My sister paid a lot for her kenmore appliances and has had problem after problem with them this past 1.5 yrs (since she built). they have mostly GE in kitchen so I'll have to ask about those. tho I don't like buying GE because of the guy running it. I also see no need to pay tons of money for these things. I used a 'I have no idea what brand' oven for 15 yrs raising 4 kids. there are microwaves bigger than that oven nowadays. and I had a 4 burner corning cooktop. pain in the butt in the 70's. my maytag W/D did last a good 20 yrs tho. I cooked and baked a lot over the yrs. I never had a stove vent until in my 30's! didn't know you were supposed to have one. don't think you were back then. what raises the cost on appliances these days is people want all the latest doodads on them. and they want them BIG. unless you have 8 or more kids or are running a restaurant out of you home, I don't see the need. I won't be buying those things for my remodel. will continue to use my about 18 cu ft fridge that I bought for 800.00 in '98 (at a local appl store). I won't be getting the things I really 'wanted' because they cost too much. i'll buy what I need at a price I can afford. I will shop at the appl store again and will use my hotplate/counter oven until I find what I need at a good price. I won't be near as upset having problems with a 900.00 range than one I paid 2,000.00 to get. I don't think my frugal self would pay more than 1,000.00 on an appliance. btw, if you're talking about those plastic bins to put your ice in - they sell them at Walmart for a few dollars. dump your made ice into one of those and put the original back in place to keep on making more ice. An ice maker isn't something I'd pay to have in a fridge tho (only because my water is bad and I won't drink it so I don't want ice made from it). people today regularly pay several hundred more per appliance to get SS.

As you already said, there's ALWAYS another sale. One holiday sale isn't going to give you more of a discount than another holiday sale. A lot also depends on supply and demand. If things are slow, the discounts will be greater. Also, if one appliance model isn't selling well, the discounts on that one will be greater. Or if it's about to be discontinued, you can get a better deal. Those factors influence the price more than which holiday it is. There's a DW I am interested in (for a friend), and every time I check its price on the AJMadison website, the price is changing, kinda like the stock market. Up $40 one week, down $20 the next, up $15 the next, and so on. For the really best deal, I think you do best by talking with your salesperson, or if buying online, calling them, and saying "can you do any better on X appliance?". They often will. What you don't want to get sucked into, is buying appliances too early for install, cause you think the sale is too fantastic to pass up. Most appliances have warranties that kick in upon delivery, not upon installation. If you buy an appliance, say, 4 months before you install it, you will be foregoing 4 months of warranty. And you'll have to store the appliance(s) somewhere if you aren't ready to install--and it is during storage that often things get damaged, by being jostled, pushed, dragged, having things dropped on them, etc.

Within the last 10 years we have gone thru 3 different W/D First was top loader Fisher and Paykel W/D, not too bad, but after 3 years mechanically failed, quiet machine. 2nd was a highly rated front loaders Whirlpool (go green). what a horrible, horrible mistake. Hubby does the washing and finally had to hook up a hose from the shower to the washer to add water, was funny at the beginning, but as time went by, the frustration was growing, clothes was not coming out clean and it took longer to do a load of wash more than anything. After a year, we finally gave in a starting researching for another W/D, ran into SQ. The sky opened and the sun came out. Never saw a happier husband, who loves to wash clothes. The price for the W/D was less than 1/2 what we paid for the Whirlpool, and this was on the higher end residential model. We were able to sell our whirlpool front loaders to someone who was really looking for our model (rated high), we lost money in the sale, but was happy to get rid of it. Immediately noticed a difference in towels and clothes, came out cleaner, no more shower hook up for water. I think many people forget about SQ and they don't realize that they have been in the commercial business (laundry mats) for a long long time, can you imagine the abuse those machine takes. Recently had a friend who was convinced to buy a Samsung several years ago and is now running into issues with their machine. Even the repair man told them that he would not have bought a Samsung. They tried selling the Samsung and a used dealer used he wouldn't touch or buy that machine at all, he highly recommended a SQ and if my friend was selling a used SQ he would have bought that from him in a snap! The wife and I are laughing, because she wanted the SQ but he decided to listen to a salemans. He is now buying the SQ and had to donate his Samsung, because no one wants to buy it. SQ for a happy life!

I found 2 things -- YMMV --- everything current was cheaper by a large amount online and last year model local distributor mark downs beat online prices. From what I understand, if you want a price controlled brand, a distributor can give you other breaks -- installation, a free other brand something or other, etc. In the last 2 months, I have purchased 30K (suggested retail not including taxes and delivery) for a bit less than 15K including tax and delivery. Some were online and some were last year's model mark downs from a local distributor. I had to return a smashed sink to Amazon. Easy because I refused the delivery. A local distributor and I had a few rounds getting the knobs for a range and an online store's discount wasn't initially what it should have been, but it is worked out now. I would do it again to save any day.
