Garage garbage can foul odor- diapers are the culprit

How do I get rid of the awful stink? When the lid's closed, it's not so bad, but even a tiny opening to drop something in lets out a green cloud of stank.

We had a diaper genie, but don't anymore.

I don't wanna have to hose the thing out every week.

Do "Stick-ups" work?

How about a dusting of baking powder or something?

There is something you could buy at pet store that help get rid of the odor. However i dont know what they are called. Yes the diaper genie doesnt work very well. We started to save our bread bags and we put the poopie diapers in them. It is thicker to keep the bread fresh and odors out. They work great!

Is that stuff from the pet store something that attaches to the trash can?
Wrapping the diapers is a great idea. We were doing this for a while using plastic grocery bags, but got lazy.
I'm looking for something that overpowers the stink so I don't have to worry about carefully packaging each diaper.

Although my husband is now in a nursing home there are various pads that you can purchase to place under him. Although Walmart seems to have discontinued them pads for children's bedwetting or even mattress pads worked for a short while with my husband. They can be washed and since they have a plastic middle layer last a couple of months. Is he at the point that you must assist him with bathing? If he is watch the area leading up the crack between the butt cheeks for redness. This is one of the problems that can send people to nursing homes which is another thing that you should mention in passing.

Hi - a lot of these posts seem to be slightly different but thought I would share my experience in my home that may prove helpful or be similar. My wife and I moved to our home newly built 5 years ago tomorrow! I can't say I've noticed the smell in the first year but maybe it's poor memory. After the first year, we'd notice this propane/rotten/dead animal like smell. At first I thought the builder put something in the vents - no signs of any rodents ever and ruled this out. Next I checked the line/drain from the AC/furnace and even had a tech check and clean the pump - no help. plumber says there is no issue with drainage or sewer or any back up venting - ok. what HAS helped intermittently is calling the gas company to check the gas lines inside. I've had them 7 times in the past 2 years, each time they find a small leak - nothing major, no reading except with the sniffer right at the source of the leak. {I also have multiple CO and gas detectors on the floor (heavy gas). They have never gone off}. After the gas company repairs the pipe the smell is gone for a few weeks maybe months depending on warm or cold season. It comes back, gas company is back out and repeat. I have replaced two ovens in the kitchen due to them being the source of the leak. I find that the air return on the main level of my house sucks in the smell and returns it to the furnace. When the furnace kicks on we smell it out of the vents. Occasionally I can smell it in the room where the furnace is also. Gas company has done line checks, pressure checks, fixed leaks - I've paid them thousands to come out and fix this over and over then the smell returns - I've returned two "new" ovens due to leaks after minimal use. I have a 2 yr old son and new baby due in a month and NEED this resolved. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or have been through something similar.

I never have an issue with garbage smells spreading to the rest of my cabinetry unless (A) I haven't taken the trash out (I typically don't go longer than 24 hrs., 36 max), or (B) I haven't washed the garbage bin itself recently. The plastic garbage bin can really hold onto odors, even if you have nothing smelly in there currently. Try washing the plastic bin out with Ajax powder, give it a good scrub, let dry. I also use my disposal a lot. I made sure to get a 3/4 hp Waste King which is powerful with a lot of torque. I even put chicken bones down there. I agree with the other poster who said even if you install some kind of metal shield, you will still get hit with the odor when you open the garbage pull-out. So those shields take care of the symptom, not the underlying cause. As I said, scrub the bin out, use the disposal, and take out the garbage with more frequency.

Wow - I have never had a problem with odors and we put everything in our 2-bin pullout - and it sometimes sits for days until it's full. We do lightly rinse the recyclables (per our County's request), but we don't heavily rinse them. We put food scraps (meat, bones, etc.) in the trash bin all the time! [Since we are on septic we do try to limit what we put in the GD somewhat.] We've been using ours for almost 4 years now (I can't believe it's been that long since we remodeled!) The trash pullout is one of the many "best things" about our kitchen - no more dogs getting into the trash, no more trash in the open, etc. (Our standard poodles quickly learned how to "step on the pedal" to open our trash can in our old kitchen!)

When we had babies in diapers we wrapped the poopy diapers and put them in the trash outside as soon as possible.

When you have poopy diapers, you HAVE to wrap them well and get outside....or suffer the consequences.
Teach that kid to use the potty ASAP!!
Nothing from the pet store deals with a garbage can stuffed full of poopy pants.

I've tried wrapping them and air fresheners, but the only thing I have found that really works is the Bad Air Sponge deodorizer. It's great - it sucks the smell right out of the can! I order mine at goodbyestinky.com

We found that using a seperate trash can for diapers in the baby's room didn't work well for our family so we just threw the wet diapers in the regular trash. It got emptied at least once a day. Dirty diapers went outside in the big trash can right away.

i put plain charcole in a diaper pail worked wonders... this was at a daycare with lots of poopee diapers!

If you live near Birmingham, Alabama call The Wheelie Bin Cleaning Service at 205-527-4132. They will come to your house and clean, sanitize, and deodorize your trash can for about $6.00 if you sign up for a year's subscription. They come out monthly and even put your trash can up when they are done. They come on your trash day after it has been emptied.

Try sprinkling borax in the bottom of the can. I assume you dump the solids in the toilet. We have a step-on can, line it with a plastic grocery bag, empty it often. Also spray Febreeze in and around the can if there was a really stinky one!

Been a while since I had any diapers in the house.. way before the plastic grocery bags, but always disposed of them daily.

Moving right along 35 years,moved to what might be considered a 'retirement area' in FL, and there were little tiny bins attached to the inside cabinets that were meant to hold only a plastic bag. Fill it up, take it out. No stink.

Depending on how many diapers you have vs. how much regular trash you have, might want to just hang a plastic grocery bag on a handle somewhere and deposit it daily in the big trash can.

If you're referring to your big trash can in your yard, go buy some lime @ the garden center (Lowes, HD, etc.), and put a bit of that in after each daily 'deposit'.

I thought you were referring to your kitchen can when I last read the post.
