Comments (17)Funny (and illustrative) story.......a few years ago we bought some Durian and were going to try some of it in a restaurant that some friends own. The cook took half of what was left of the fruit after we ate as much as we could. He intended to play a mean prank on his landlord by squeezing the fruit pulp through their mail slot over the weekend, so they would have a smelly mess when they came in on Monday. I didn't learn about this until much later.....anyway, the cook couldn't accomplish his prank on Friday night so he took the fruit home, triple wrapped and then bagged it further and put it in his refrigerator. He said the whole apartment stunk by Saturday morning and it even woke up his roommate. The roomate came out and gagged when he opened the refrigerator. They were both convinced that the fruit had rotted or fermented or both over night and had to be thrown out asap. They were just getting ready to see who was going to be elected to throw the package out when their neighbor...who is Chinese from Singapore, knocked on their door. As soon as the door was opened, the neighbor was delighted by the odor....I mean fragrance of a childhood memory. He came in.....took the fruit from the refrigerator and ate every last drop of it. And so...the moral of the story....there is a good reason why they make chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and yes, Duran ice cream....See MoreEnclosing trash cans in cabinets? Inconvenient hassle?
Comments (47)@scootermom, 1) It is electrical. When the motor is activated by pressure or pulling on the drawer, there's a curved fingerlike projection that physically pushes the drawer forward (see image). Closing simply uses the soft-close mechanism of Blumotion slides that many people already have. When you have a power outage or tripped breaker, the drawers work like regular drawers. Servo Drive is a rather complex system to put together but a very simple one in functionality: A 24V DC transformer (big block above outlet) powers up to 10 (I think) Servo Drive motors (small block below outlet with white label), you need a mount for each motor (L-shaped flat piece motor is mounted on), and low voltage wire between the transformer and motor and between motors (they are mounted in series). If you have servo drive motors for multiple drawers in a bank, they have a vertical aluminum rail that all the motors can mount to. 2) I had JUST gotten the song out of my head until you mentioned it... Here goes another 3 months of "Servo Drive, Servo Drive, it's so easy..." @madeyna, we have Nine Star iTouchless trash cans at our office and at the house, and we love them. I hate touching trash cans, and plus they're cheaper than Simple Human's NON-motorized cans, though not quite as pretty. My one complaint is they get VERY grimy in the lid's crevices, and we put off cleaning it because we don't like to, and eventually it gets really gross. I hope our trash pullouts will stay a lot cleaner than our iTouchless cans!...See MoreCorner Sink and Pull-Out Trash
Comments (14)Argh...just saw this...sorry for the really, really late reply. Our sink is the Franke Orca...I can't remember the exact dimensions, I think it's about 30" wide?? I remember that our cabinet sales person wasn't 100% sure it would fit in a 36" corner cab, so that's why we went to the 42". In hindsight, I'm glad we did as it is very roomy. The trash ended up on the left because the peninsula contains the range, and on either side I have drawers (one for dishes and one for pots and pans). Pots and pans are to the right of the range, dishes to the left. When emptying the dishwasher, I basically just pick up the dishes and swivel over to the drawer and put them in. It's SO easy it's almost disgusting. Yeah, I guess we do lean over the trash to put the dishes away, but it hasn't been an inconvenience. I don't really notice it. I'll try to pay attention tonight to see if I do anything different!...See MoreLooking for Kitchen Layout Design Suggestions, Peninsula vs Island
Comments (13)mama goose_gw zn6OH Thank you for commenting! Switching the DW to the right of the sink and creating dish storage in the island is a fantastic idea! The placement now IS smack dab in the middle of my cooking zone when I think about it. And the pull out trash bin in it's place makes much more sense. Definitely going to add that to our list of changes! Is there a standard for the depth of the drawers to store the dishes? My husband and I are still undecided about having seating at the island. Since it would be a gathering spot when we entertain, we are worried the walkway may be too narrow for seated guests - guests standing around - and guests trying to walk by. While I love the idea, it is something we are still tossing around. There is currently a storage unit in the school room, on the flip side of the pantry wall. If possible we would rather leave that room as is - since it is technically 'finished'. What are your thoughts about locating the under counter beverage fridge in the dining room built-ins? I appreciate the thoughts on using a counter depth fridge. We currently have a true built-in on our appliance list and the difference in price is definitely worth noting. Thanks again for all of your great suggestions!...See Morekaseki
