Enclosing trash cans in cabinets? Inconvenient hassle?
Comments (47)@scootermom, 1) It is electrical. When the motor is activated by pressure or pulling on the drawer, there's a curved fingerlike projection that physically pushes the drawer forward (see image). Closing simply uses the soft-close mechanism of Blumotion slides that many people already have. When you have a power outage or tripped breaker, the drawers work like regular drawers. Servo Drive is a rather complex system to put together but a very simple one in functionality: A 24V DC transformer (big block above outlet) powers up to 10 (I think) Servo Drive motors (small block below outlet with white label), you need a mount for each motor (L-shaped flat piece motor is mounted on), and low voltage wire between the transformer and motor and between motors (they are mounted in series). If you have servo drive motors for multiple drawers in a bank, they have a vertical aluminum rail that all the motors can mount to. 2) I had JUST gotten the song out of my head until you mentioned it... Here goes another 3 months of "Servo Drive, Servo Drive, it's so easy..." @madeyna, we have Nine Star iTouchless trash cans at our office and at the house, and we love them. I hate touching trash cans, and plus they're cheaper than Simple Human's NON-motorized cans, though not quite as pretty. My one complaint is they get VERY grimy in the lid's crevices, and we put off cleaning it because we don't like to, and eventually it gets really gross. I hope our trash pullouts will stay a lot cleaner than our iTouchless cans!...See MoreLayout help please!! Island out. Peninsula in. Thoughts?
Comments (8)I like LiveWireOak's layout with the sink arrangement. Now two people can access the sink at the same time, and the DW is easily accessed being placed to the side of the sink. However, I wouldn't want to live with a fridge off by itself in that far corner and would put it back where you have it in your layout, homebuyer. My suggestion is that you reconsider putting the wall oven under the induction cooktop. I have that situation using a Bosch oven built in under a Bosch induction cooktop and have found it to be not bad at all in actual use as I had previously been concerned. Granted it's not quite as nice as the oven at eye level but not a bad compromise. This thought is coming from someone who had two built in wall ovens for 35 years previously so I know the different trade-offs between the two arrangements. The only caveat with the Bosch wall oven under the Bosch induction cooktop is that the countertop height should be raised one inch to allow the recommended air space allowance between the two appliances. However, I found the higher counter to a more comfortable working height for someone like myself who is 5'4". That leaves the question of where to place the microwave and would depend upon your frequency of use and preference. I would put the pantry in the far corner either with, without, the MW. Anyway, it looks like you're coming into the home stretch and wishing you the best with your final layout....See MoreAnyone not have a trash pull-out and prefer that?
Comments (26)Just a note about "one more thing to clean." I have to clean our trash pull out a lot less than I did the outside of the can that used to sit out. As far as "giving up cabinet space"--I prioritized according to how much an item gets used. Since trash is used more than almost any other item in our kitchen, except maybe the sink, it deserved primo cabinet space. It was far more deserving than some of the expensive pieces we use a couple of times a year. The aesthetics of hiding the trash, to me, are as important as the aesthetics of highlighting a showpiece. Actually more important since there is an important functional element to trash beyond the aethetics. As far as pulling the trash out with gunky hands, I have cup pulls and usually one of my pinky fingers is clean and I can easily hook it under and pull open the trash---with good glides, the effort is minimal. Our 2 trashes in the pull out are the size of paper grocery bags--which is what we line them with (compost doesn't go in our garbage.) The trash pull out is definitely a pleasant surprise with how well it works and how it solves former problems with what to do with the trash. When I'm cooking, I usually throw trash/compost into a dirty bowl on the counter and then sort it out while I'm waiting for something on the range or mw. I know I would trip over the trash if I had it near me on wheels (which is what always happens with our step stool, even when I'm aware of it being right next to me.)...See MoreKitchen Trash Pull Out vs Stand Alone
Comments (26)You're both right. There have been posts about this before (use google instead of the houzz search engine) and people feel pretty strongly. I go both ways. :) I now keep dog food in my trash pullout. If your family is a bit messy, that cabinet will get gross if it's not cleaned often. (It's usually not the actual trash; it's the splatters.) If you do not have a good spot for a free-standing can, the pullout is great. In my previous kitchen, I retrofitted a nasty old cabinet with a pullout and it was an improvement. In the remodeled one, once we stopped using the pullout for trash, things became nicer....See Morekaseki
