best method to clean a basement tile floor
Comments (3)I had a situation some years ago with some really, really dirty vinyl flooring. After trying a bunch of household, all purpose type cleaners and a lot of elbow grease, I bought some commercial 3M floor stripper. The difference was absolutely amazing; I put down the stripped waiting a few minutes, and years accumulated grime wiped up effortlessly. Unfortunately the stuff isn't cheap and you'll need to find a janitorial or industrial supply house. Well worth the money and effort IMHO. Comments (60)I've read every suggestion posted here. My findings are as follows: never use glass cleaner on laminate it contains ammonia and will eventually deteriorate the protective coating as per the Bruce Flooring Mfg website. Of course they recommend laminate floor cleaner however can be expensive. never use steam mops, water will eventually warp the boards because the water does get in between the boards not recommended by the mfg, unless of course you are on your hands and knees wiping the floor dry. never use Swiffer it just causes a big mess of smears and streaks, especially the kind with Febreeze. This is from a couple of friends who used this product and got the above results. THE BEST option I found as I did this myself was to first clean the floor by hand with a bucket of water a few drops of dish hand soap to remove the residue from the other cleaners you may have used. I used a clean "fabric softener free" cloth to both wash and dry the floor. Fabric softener just causes smears and a big mess. Was time consuming but totally worth it as it got rid of all the residue that had accumulated. This option withstood the "FOOTPRINT" test and I am overjoyed!!! The next time I cleaned my floors I used a spray bottle of plain hot water with a couple drops of dish hand soap and my microfiber mop cleaning a small area at a time. No more streaking, smearing, no residue and especially no "FOOTPRINTS!" Thank you everyone for your suggestions it was most helpful!...See MoreBest vac for cleaning hardwood floors & around cabinets?
Comments (61)Thank you Flash407 for bumping this thread back to page 1. Now I've got it bookmarked. One of those things I meant to read but didn't get around to. What a lot of good info. This is better than epinions! :) Have to say I too am sorry about spending $400 on a Dyson, (EVERY time I use it!) for a number of reasons. Strong suction but it ends there. However, mine is not a 'ball', so maybe that one is different. Considered the Roomba, and from what you're all saying it really does sound great, still not sure about the cat reaction though??? The other name coming up again and again seems to be *Miele*. Particularly for the canister vacs for hardwood and kitchens? (The backpack sounds cool but unfortunately my 'back' is beyond that :) Have to go check these Mieles out. Anything has to be better than lugging that Dyson around OR trying to use it's attachments. Speaking of smells...you're all lucky not to live in eastern PA. A new invasive species arrived in a cargo container in 2000, according to Rutgers Univ. in Allentown PA, called the Brown marmorated Stink Bug. They got to my area (just north of Philadelphia) a couple years ago and it's a war zone! Vacumm one of these things and the smell (an oil they can spray) will be everywhere plus in the vacuum itself for days. :(...See MoreHow do you keep home clean with multiple animals?
Comments (12)Thanks for the link to the furminator and all your tips. I will also look for that charcoal for the litter boxes. I understand why someone may miss the house bc of no lock box, but I can't take the chance that someone would come over without calling me. I do work mornings and would be very upset if one of my critters got out of the house while I was not here. We already lost a cat that way when we remodeled this house. I will have to buy one of those furminators. It looks like it works great. One of my cats is a Persian and I usually get his hair cut in the spring and summer in a lion cut to help keep down the fine hair that floats off him or comes off in clumps. My dog is a 5 lb. toy poodle so he doesn't really shed. He just gets groomed every 4-6 weeks. Because of his size I do not leave him alone outside at all. And I always pick up outside right away, so no worry about stepping in any doggie stuff here. Besides we will probably still have snow on the ground when I sell. I already have an allergic free vaccumm, so I just gotta remember to really go around and vaccuum everything every other day if I can (including the curtains where the cats end up rubbing against). Fortunately, we live in an area in upstate NY where the housing market is still stable. Our houses did go up in price, but did not rise as much as some other areas on the east coast. Also, there is new industry starting to come in here so people are still buying here. Most of the homes for sale near me have already sold this year so I am hoping that next spring will be good still. I think I will stick to appointment only and probably for qualified buyers only as our house although not the most expensive in town, is one of the more expensive and nicer ones. We will be moving out of state into a rental if and when we sell as my new home is yet to be built. So we will have some time to list this home if it doesn't sell right away. We are still working with an architect on the design and the house build is to start at the earliest in fall 08...See Moreebear1271
