About those colored deviled eggs, please?

Can someone tell me exactly how to dye the deviled eggs, please? Or, can you direct me to a post that explains it? I know it's not rocket science, but I've never done it before. Yesterday I bought some regular food coloring to use. I'm assuming I boil my eggs, peel, cut them in half, take out the yolk and then dye the halves. But, how much dye do I use and what do I mix it with...water?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think my hubby will get a kick out of this...if I can pull if off. HA!

I wondered the same thing Pup, my eggs are ready to peel now and I'm going to try one in some colored water as a test. Sounds like such a cute idea! Crossing my fingers that it will work. Luvs

I'm so sorry I was to busy to post before now. I didn't end up making my deviled eggs as planned. DGD wanted to dye eggs and I didn't cook enough eggs for her to dye many so here's what we ended up with.

I had neon food coloring and she said she would dye the deviled egg mixture and she mashed them and dyed them alright. DGD even filled the whites with the mixture and did a great job for being almost 5. She said look Nana they match your flowers we brought.

What do you think? Wish I would of taken a shot, once they were cleaned up and the olives were added but had to much to do as we ate at noon today. Good thing DD shot a picture for her to scrap.

Here's my recipe, from my Mom of course. I'm guessing at the amounts, cuz I just do it my taste and consistency, but lets say you're doing a dozen eggs: Miracle Whip, not mayo: 3/4 to a cup (that's a guess, start small, you can always add more) Finely chopped sweet pickles: 2 tablespoons A little of the pickle juice: 1 tablespoon Just a small squirt of yellow mustard: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Sugar: 2 teaspoons to start From here it's just how sweet you like it, and use the type of pickles you like the best. This is the same "sauce" my Mom used for potato salad too, only she added celery seed to the mixture. Hope you like.

Alexa this is how I have saved MArilyn's instructions to my file: Colored Deviled Eggs-Marilyn When you cook your eggs, be sure they don't boil: Place eggs in single layer in saucepan. Cover completely with cold water and add a large amount of salt, 2 tablespoons and about 1 tablespoon vinegar. Cover and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, keeping covered and allow to sit undisturbed for 25 minutes. Drain water and plunge eggs into ice water. (The yolks will turn out bright yellow with no green ring). Cool completely before peeling and remove yolks. Mash yolks using your fingers and stir in remaining ingredients until smooth. Fill eggs (using a pastry bag) with yolk mixture. **Color eggs after shelling them and removing the yolk for a festive presentation: For each color bring 2/3 cup of water to a boil. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon vinegar and liquid food color as desired. Carefully drop in cooked egg white and leave it in the water until it reaches the color you want (color will become more intense out of the water). Here's a tip from Shirley Corriher (Cookwise); the night before you boil the eggs for deviled eggs, store the egg carton sideways--that is, on edge so that the eggs are resting horizontally. (You may wish to tape the carton shut so it doesn't pop open, and/or prop something next to it in the fridge so it stays sideways.) The idea is that the yolk will center itself inside the albumen and make a more attractive deviled egg. Here's one of her methods for boiling eggs, using a cold water start: -Place eggs in a single layer in a heavy saucepan and cover with 1 1/2 inches of cold water -Partially cover the pot and bring to a full rolling boil -Turn the heat down to low, cover completely, and leave on heat for 30 seconds -Remove from heat and let eggs stand in hot water for 15 minutes --Cool the eggs by putting them in cold running water for 5 minutes. (I drain the hot water first, then run cold water over them for 5 minutes) I've been boiling eggs this way for the past year or so; very few cracked shells and few green yolks. The nice thing about this technique is that once you turn off the heat you can go do something else. I use the kitchen timer at the link, wearing it around my neck to summon me back to the kitchen to finish up the task. As someone else mentioned, if you use slightly older eggs, they are easier to shell than really fresh ones. I tend to buy two dozen at a time, using one for fresh applications (souffles, poaching, etc) and saving the second one to boil the next week. Here is a link that might be useful: kitchen timer

My poultry guy at the farmer's market told me that some chickens (breeds of chickens? specially raised chickens? -- I don't know) always lay double-yolk eggs. He can charge higher prices for some of his eggs because he can guarantee double yolks. People around here like them, I guess because you're only eating one big fried egg but it seems like you're eating two. So somehow you got eggs laid by the double-yolking chickens.

Thanks everybody. Phonegirl, I think those look really, really good! Luvstocraft, how did your's turn out?

You're not gonna believe the stupid thing I did. I forgot to take my small ham out of the freezer for Easter. Soooooo, we didn't even have a proper Easter dinner. Sooooo, I never even boiled my eggs. It's just me and hubby so it was no big deal. I will do it today or tomorrow and we will play Easter catch-up, I guess.

Interesting that some people dye the whites of the eggs, and some dye the yolks. I would like to see a pic of the whites dyed if anyone has one.

They do match the flowers, and they are really cute. Your table looks great, too. Sorry about your ham. I dyed the whites on my deviled eggs and they turned out really cute, sorry no pics.

Pup, I experimented with two cooked egg whites--used warm water with five drops of red food coloring--let it sit in the dye for a few minutes then took it out. Decided it was "okay" but not fantastic, so didn't bother with the rest!

Punk, I would never have thought to dye the yolks, but those sure look pretty festive! And they do go perfectly with your gorgeous flowers! Tell your little GD she did a great job and made your table look really pretty. ;o)

I see you used my favorite set of dishes and I love those cute napkin rings too. I also really like the looks of the little painted bunny in the background--is it one of your creations too?
