Basement garage/shop
Comments (3)I am planning to renovate the unfinished basement in my 100 yr old row house. The space is what I would call a ¾ basement (not a walk-out but mostly under ground) I want to use half of the area for living space (rec. room, bathroom) and the other half as a shop space that I can store and repair motorcycles, lawn mowers etc. If I consider it an attached garage with living space above, I know there are requirements for fire resistant sheet rock, a fire rated door, etc. Some of the things I am not sure about are if I have to install a special fire wall, vapor sealing, ventilation, or anything else to make it safe....See MoreSealing off unused basement garage door...advice needed
Comments (2)Thanks, millworkman. We have thought to use two sheets of 2" blue Dow insulating panels inside the sheathing as you suggest. We were looking at the gasket along the garage door bottom and thought it might be as snug fitting as carpeting for the perimeters of the outside panels....See MoreAttached garage away from kitchen or basement garage below
Comments (2)Our garage is like yours now, detached and away from the house. My husband has taken it over for his boat building hobby so we don't use it as a garage. Our driveway comes to the front of the house and our kitchen is at the back so I just bring groceries in through the front. When I have a large grocery order to bring in, if my husband's not around, I have one of those large old lady shopping carts that can handle about 4 large bags at a time and I use that. No problem. I just wheel it into the kitchen. If I used my garage regularly to put my car away, I wouldn't want to have to come and go through the basement to access my car, let alone schlep grocery bags up the stairs. I don't know how important it is for you to put your cars away at night or how old you are, but the older you get, the more you'll appreciate things on one level....See MoreInsulating basement garage door in ctrl KY
Comments (0)Under our attached woodshop, there is a storage area accessed by a single garage door as well as a walk-out door. Seldom use the garage door. The woodshop has an electric heat pump that also serves the shop basement. The ceiling is not insulated. It is convenient to store a trailer load of wood. We have been thinking about building an exterior, easily removable, wall that would insulate/minimize energy losses in summer and winter. Has anyone ever done this or have advice on some easy to construct panels to achieve our goal? Our house is ICF (insulated concrete form), and the face of the garage door is inset about 12 inches. The garage door faces south. The house is geothermal-and now wish the woodshop was the same....See Morecoloradomomof5
