Cheap version of victorian encaustic tile w/ wet saw--crazy?
Comments (8)Wow, more feedback than I hoped for! Thank you all. Mongo, I'm really glad I asked BEFORE I bought a saw. $500--gasp, but I like your resale idea. Bill, thanks for putting me on to Colleen's work--if somebody is doing it commercially, that tells me that there's a *chance* my results will look good (as opposed to some things, which no matter how well implemented, look hokey). Flyleft, good point. I swear some heavy gardening I did a couple of years ago initiated my first (and hopefully last) case of plantar fascitis (sp?), which oddly enough dissappeared for good the night I stayed up all night, on my feet on a concrete floor, packing up our basement. Miracle cure? I don't recommend it. But I digress...In any case, I think if I can make a quilt, which I have, I can find the time for this project. Thank you, thank you for the input! Now I gotta go find out where Colleen gets her tile...it looked really good. Here is a link to a floor she did. Love it love it love it! Comments (23)re a grinder: I've recently made extensive use of a Makita 4" grinder (N9514, I think), with MK blades. The most interesting thing I can contribute is that my DH evidently mounted the blade backwards, but it works *so* much more smoothly and handleably than when it's mounted what is supposedly the correct way. I got spark-free, chip-free gliding movement from it, but when it was turned around I got chips, sparks, bounces, etc... Just thought I'd throw that in. I'm also needing a sander for tile so I can take down the shine on the top edges of the bullnose--I need supposedly a 150, which is what my tile guy used on the edges of the field tile that would show to make a wonderfully touchable but still not shiny finish....See Morecut glass with tile saw?
Comments (3)Thanks for the replys. For two sides, I was wanting to take only a little off and a saw would be perfect for making it straight. I'll just do it the old fashion way. Ken...See MoreRing Saw vs. Wet Saw
Comments (3)Only time I use my ring saw, TAMAR is if I want to cut heart shapes, flowers or deep curves in glass, cuz glass only cuts in straight lines. If you have a wet saw, and want to do some creative cutting on it b/f you decide on the ring saw, get draw some shapes w/a permanent marker, then make your cuts into that shape, close together. When I cut a plate I cut them about 3/4 inches apart into the footer. Then I break them off w/my hand, and w/the nipper I can trim up any rough edges. I'm even using the blade to grind off those rough edges. IMO the ring saw is for cutting intricate shapes on glass, even though some have been successful in cutting plates w/o wearing their blades out quickly. Had I a choice over the two, I'd stay w/the wet saw. This is just my opinion, mind you....See MoreMongoCT
