beveled edge wood floor -- how to keep clean?
Comments (1)I avoided bevels for that reason -- I'm not a super cleaner, have two teens and a dog, and wanted hardwoods in the kitchen. The microbevel isn't as bad, it just accents the individual boards, but ultimately I went with regular plank floors, sanded/finished in place....See MoreKeeping tile floor clean
Comments (2)The easiest and most effective way is to have it grouted with an epoxy grout (Spectralok is a good one that is commonly used.) The down side to that is that the grout itself and the labor to install it are more expensive. However, for that one-time cost you won't have to ever put out the money for grout cleaners and grout sealers. You won't be staining your grout and regular cleaning is easy with just sweeping and occasional mopping. On a floor that is grouted with regular grout you should just use a broom as much as possible and just spot clean areas that a broom won't get the job done in. Make sure when it's new that it is clean and use a good grout sealer on it (my favorite is a stone and grout sealer called Aqua Mix Sealer's Choice Gold. It's even sold in some Lowe's stores.) Make sure it has cured as long as the sealer bottle says it needs to before sealing- usually 72 hours. It can still get dirty looking over time. Just use a cleaner that is designed to clean grout so that it doesn't damage the grout itself and follow the directions on the bottle. When you've done the deep cleaning re-seal the grout again. We end up doing ours about once every year and a half or so when the traffic in our kitchen and dining room get it looking dirty. It cleans up well, but I wish it had epoxy grout so we wouldn't have to maintain it....See MoreWhite kitchens: how hard to keep clean?
Comments (16)As a boomer who's had white kitchens for most of my adult life, I don't have much basis for comparison. However, the difference in my attitude about keeping a white kitchen clean has changed dramatically since I got introduced to my new BFF: Her name's Magic Eraser! What an amazing little helper. IMHO, that little sponge has managed to elevate spot cleaning white cabs, moldings, backsplashes, etc. from a boring, functional task to a work of art. Okay. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but now that I've got my ME, I'll never go back! lol...See MoreHow hard is it to keep unglazed porcelain tile clean?
Comments (4)Did you try putting some dirt (i.e., mud) on the sample to see how easy it was to clean off? I tried this on a couple different porcelain samples. One was impossible to wipe clean with a damp cloth, it needed a brush to get the mud out of the tiny crevices. The other wiped clean very easily. Fortunately the second one was at HD and half the price of the one at the tile store. I was very surprised at the results because they both were porcelain, looked very similar and felt the same. Go figure. I might add that it did show the dirt which was disappointing. Didn't think it would as it was a medium-light beigey color, slightly moddeled, similar to travertine. At least I don't have to keep it clean, its in a rental house!...See Moregraywings123
