Size of Family Room?

Hi everyone,

We are trying to plan a family room adjacent to the kitchen as a place for kids to hang out, etc while Mom's in the kitchen cooking. I'm worried that the size of the room is becoming too large! Right now it's 20x24 feet. I'm really looking for more of a place to just stop for a moment and sit down a few minutes in front of the TV. Maybe a "family-room nook". Does that make sense? Does anyone have pictures of a small integrated family-room area? Or dimensions of your family room that works for you? Many, many thanks!!

How old are your kids? Do you have boys or girls? If they are young, are you going to have an alternate space for the kids to hang out when they get older or will this be the space for them to hang out with their friends then too? The amount of space that you will want for little kids is different than the amount of space that you will want for big kids IMO.

You are wise to consider ahead of time.... We have a large combined kitchen / family room. I guess it would be called a great room. It's approx. 30 ft x 20 ft. One problem is that the big TV in the greatroom gets turned up really loud so that it can be heard in the kitchen. We also have our computer set up in this same area. The noise of chatter, TV, kitchen, YouTube, etc. is a lot to take. We do have small kids so they contribute to the problem. They have a lot of room to run which simply ups the noise level. I favored this set up so that I could work in the kitchen and still keep an eye on the kids as they watched TV, played in the greatroom, etc. However, there are many times when I think it would be nice to have a smaller area with a smaller TV. This would hopefully "contain" the kids a bit and keep the noise down.
My SIL has a small room off her kitchen that seems to be just about right. It's only 8x10 or so and is right off the dinette / kitchen area. They have a small couch, two chairs and a TV in there. It's nice.

My great room is 16 deep x 20 wide from wall to wall. The built in cabinets take up 2' of space and the fireplace hearth eats another 2'. My furniture arangement is as you describe - I have a 5' walkway behind the sofa and 3.5' between the fireplace hearth and coffee table. We also have french doors that open to the covered patio but we elected to have them swing out to save that interior floor space. I have a 8x12 rug in the room and my sofa, tables and 2 chairs are arranged around that and the seating pieces have front legs on, back legs off the rug. We have plenty of room to walk around the furniture but it is still intimate enough for conversation. My house is nowhere near as formally appointed as the ones in the pictures above and upon the advice of a decorator friend, my furniture sits closer together than is normally seen in staged photos but again, it works for us.

Lampert Dias Architects, Inc.We are in Texas and it gets really hot, up to 110 degrees in the Summer and Winter just lasted for about 2 months last year (~36 degrees) Personally, I really like full windows for a full clear view, thats why I chose fixed windows in the family room, while the breakfast bay window (on the right of pic) could be open for ventilation in the kitchen area. I'm not sure what brand, it was an option the builder suggested (either 3060 or 3070)...I'll be meeting the builder to finalize all the options this weekend, I can probably ask and see if they could also do the transom bigger and operable as you mentioned earlier I actually requested to bump the ceiling height in family room from 10 ft to 12 ft too so I can accommodate bigger windows and have some dimensions between the kitchen and family room...but it was quite expensive so we didnt go with that route.

IMO both poor choices for lighting in a FR why not get lighting that lights the space no tthe ceiling for starters. No Edison bulbs and whatever you get will also need to be dropped from the ceiling quite a long way to actully light the space . I have no clue about your other things in the space so not really sure about your style . In a space with high ceilings I usually use cable lighting hung at a hume height to light a room . I usually use Tech lighting for that. BTW if your husbands eyes dry out from the fan how will putting it in the bedroom help.
