counter depth French door fridge

Anyone have a counter depth French door fridge? I was really surprised when I saw how much smaller the shelves in a counter depth are vs a regular depth French door fridge. Wondering if I should just replace my side by side w/another side by side.

If i do go w/a French door (which is what I really want) what brands do people like? I've seen the Viking Professional in person. I really like the looks of the F&P online, but I don't know their fridge reputation. My current fridge is only 29" depth so I'm pretty limited in my choices.

I had chosen the KA French door counter-depth before our layout changed and I could get a standard depth. I'm glad because I'm always lacking fridge space and have a gut feeling that the CD would have been too small for me after looking at so many of them in person. The KA seemed to get great reviews.

I also wanted a French door until we moved into the temporary house for our whole house reno. I'm sorry, but I don't like them. I don't know what the hype is. I usually end up opening both doors to get what I want, except the milk in the right door. It seems like twice the work when the kids are fussing and I'm trying to get a meal made.

Have you done any research on AJMadisondotcom? They have a great search function in the left column where you can sort by size to see which appliances meet your restrictions.

I have had a Kenmore Elite FDr CD for about 2 yrs with the mirrored doors. Love it. Love everything about it, especially cleaning the exterior doors with just Windex. Huge bottom freezer and I'd never have a top freezer or side x side again. Also would never have SS again. Cleaning fingerprints and smudges constantly is just not my thing.

Most of us have been through this decision! It really isn't so much the outside measurements as it is the inside layout that will help determine if the fridge is a good fit for you. The different brands really are not laid out the same. I took measurements and some dishes that I normally use in m fridge to check them out.... I would have purchased a fridge that would not have worked well for me if I hadn't. The GE CD has very shallow and narrow veggie drawers and did not hold a stalk of celery. Some of the others do not have an adjustable shelf to make room for very tall items. The deli drawers on some are split, making them very small. There are some with ice in the door and some with ice in the fridge compartment. Your smart to go looking, but take a few items with you and be sure to take your own measurements.

I've seen these in the stores, and the one thing I don't like about the LG is the way their water/ice dispenser are. To me, I like the dispenser on the GE Profile PYE23PSDSS best between them. The hot water on the GE Cafe didn't interest me. These GE models just came out last year, and the only negative comments I've seen is that some say they are louder than other models.

No, freestanding means not built into the cabinets like a SubZero where it's part of the cabinetry. Stainless sides are about 1K extra if you can find a fridge with them. Not many have that because not many people want the sides exposed. That's why doing cabinet panels on the sides has become more popular. Don't confuse that with being built in. The fridge still rolls in and out of the cabinet cubby like that. Or you can do stainless aftermarket applied panels for the sides, but again, that's another 1K or so. Counter depth isn't built in. It's doors and handles still stick out at least 6" from the adjacent cabinets. If you have very tight clearances, you may need built in to work. That's a whole magnitude of expense greater than counter depth. And counter depth is at least 1K more than standard depth in most brands. Kitchenaid or LG or Samsung would be my recommendations for counter depth.

I went through this last year. So I may be able to help. But a couple things above are confusing me. There are many Samsung Refrigerators, many of them are French Door models, and most of them that I see are Without a Water Dispensor. A quick search gives me RF197ABPN 18 cu. Ft. RF217ABRS 20 cu. Ft. and RF263AEWP White RF263AEBP Black RF263AEPN Platinum color RF263AERS Stainless all 26 cu. ft. and RF266 with AEWP, EABP, AEPN, AERS (as above) all 26 cu.ft. and RF265 ... Prices range from $1250 to $1600. The other thing is "2 evaporators" - i guess you mean 2 condensors, or 2 independent cooling circuits, so the freezer and fridge compartments are separately cooled. In that case you have almost no options available. The few that have 2 cooling circuits AND ARE counter_depth_also, are not French door models. Unless someone knows of Samsungs with 2 cooling circuits. Either that, or you have to modify one of these three criteria.

(I've written about my new fridge a lot.. sorry to repeat.. but since you asked...)

It is important for me to mention what our last fridge was. A TINY apt sized Hotpoint that has a single fridge compartment and freezer on the top. The thing worked, never gave us any problems the 12 years we used it, but... it was very deep, things got lost in there, and the produce bins were on the bottom so I literally had to get down on my knees anytime I needed something from them. We didn't have a landing sopt next to the fridge, at all, so I would put food ON THE FLOOR as I took it out of the fridge. Major PITA. The freezer compartment was a box with no shelves, so stuff was literally just stacked up in there. Total nightmare. Anything had to be better!

With that said...now we have a GE Cafe CD FD and we absolutely ***love it***. We are only 2 people, no kids. We find there is enough room in the fridge for all our stuff. No longer do I need to get on my knees for veggies, the fridge part being up so high is a major convenience I can't believe I ever lived without. (and we now have landing space on either side!) I can't really compare the CD version to a regular fridge cause we've never had a regular fridge... but I can imagine the CD maybe being a little too small for larger families. For us, it is perfect. I never ever get annoyed about having to open both doors. I'm happy to have the 2 doors to open!! The freezer is roomy enough for us. As someone else mentioned, how often do you even have to open the freezer, really? Maybe some people more than others, but I'm guessing there are some days I never open it once. The ice machine is in the freezer, but we don't use a lot of ice.

People seem to complain a lot about GE appliances. I'm not a huge GE fan or anything, but it turns out that 3 of the appliances in our new kitchen are GE (Cafe Fridge, Monogram DW and Monogram Micro), and so far each of them has performed exceptionally well, and they all look great to boot. My sister has a Kitchenaid FD fridge (not CD) and not to be men, but the interior of the GE Cafe fridge is much nicer looking than the KA.

So, in short, the CD FD fridge is working out wonderfully for me and my husband. We love it. Think about your family size and how you use your handing. If you are often carrying a baby, maybe a side by side is better.

Hellonasty--there is another option besides SxS or French door if you don't want the freezer on the top. (I would never buy a freezer on the top ever again!) You can buy a single door, bottom freezer unit. That's what I'm doing because it fits my kitchen layout the best. Plus, now I won't have to open two doors in the heat of the meal prep battle!
