Tile Over Solid Surfacing?

We have a shower remodel gone bad. Long story short we put Formica solid surfacing in a shower remodel - there was a water problem involving carpenter ants (yuck!) and we thought the solid surface would be the answer. That was over 7 years ago and I haven't taken a shower in the master bath since then. Tried to get my husband to hire someone - he (thought) he knew better and would save money on install. Instead we came to a stand still since he could not finish the product (sanding) and there are gaps at the base and other problems. Now I want to just tile over it - we would maintain the waterproof aspect of it and my question is - how can we tile over it? Rough sand it and tile as usual? Help!!!! I want to stop sharing a shower with my teenagers - they smell!
