You can try that....ro try a plastic scrubber like a Dobie pan...and that Dawn Dissolver that everyone is talking about.
I also would guess that oven cleaner will work.

I don't know about the Maytag specifically but we have a Viking rangetop with those textured gray grates. Viking says that you should not soak them or put them in the dishwasher because it could eventually cause them to rust. I use regular Dawn and a blue Scotch Brite pad. And for the things that don't come off, I've used the Easy Off Max Fume Free oven cleaner that Viking recommends.

I have a new GE monogram stove with the same grates. The manufacturer actually recommends the ammonia-in-a-bag method. Although, I have yet to try it. But many others here say that method works great. And for some reason, I think the manufacturer specifically said "no oven cleaner" or that may have just been for the oven. Stupid, huh?? Good luck!

Got a new gas stove for Christmas with the grey grates and a WHITE oven handle. Why do they do it? Black grates are less slaving. I end now cleaning the grates and the gas top covers every time I use them instead of wipping them with a mix of amonia & water. The heat burns the small splashes and leave the dark spots, so I have to use the soft scrub every time in details. The white handle is another issue, specially in the fridge and with a mechanic son! I really wish they where black!
