Dog hair

I have a BIG problem with dog hair. Both of my puppies weigh about 85 lbs and they distribute their hair all over my large house. I brush the dogs often and they love to be vacuum cleaned. But still they shed everywhere, and all year. I try and try to keep the floors and rugs dusted and vacuumed, but I'm losing the battle. I'm 70 years old and in poor health. Please don't tell me to work harder at it, because I physically can't. I love these big angel dogs dearly. They were both strays that I got from the Humane Society and I WON'T GIVE THEM UP. I'm not a fastidious person but I feel like I'm drowning in dog hair. Any suggestions?

First of all, bless your heart for adopting your doggies from the shelter.

I have a second chance kitty that sheds white fur all over the place. You would think we had a pack of cats instead of just one! The product I could not live without is my Swiffer. I vacuum and mop once a week, but I Swiffer an additional 2 to 3 times and am shocked by the amount of hair and dirt gets picked up from a relatively clean looking floor.

Try using a shedding blade as well as a brush. It removes much more loose hair than a regular brush will with the same amount of effort. Use only on dense fur areas and use gently as it can scrap the skin.

Dog hair in the bottom of a pond will never, ever rot. It will stay there until it is removed. The best thing you can possibly do with your design in to incorporate bottom drains. I am not talking about pool bottom drains, I am talking about pond type bottom drains. These are 4" drains with 4" pipes that carry waste from the bottom of the pond to the filters. Having bottom drains means you will never have to vacuum the pond. I know someone who did a pool to pond conversion. They laid the 4" drain and plumbing in the bottom of the pool and had another concrete floor poured to hide all the plumbing. If this is too impractical to do, you could use black ABS pipes and a retro-fit bottom drain and let the pipes sit on the pond floor. I would never consider a pond project as large as this one without incorporating bottom drains. You will also need a skimmer to handle floating hair and leaves.

yeah and those cats take care of all those nice creatures that you don't want to get rid off. They are indiscriminate killers that kill native songbirds, threatened amphibians, and mice alike. They don't respect property lines and will roam neighborhoods defecating on other people's homes, gardens, and patio furniture spreading disease. hmm, maybe people should respect those around them and not let theor cats roam free for cheap lazy pest control.

Vacuums are the subject of countless discussions on the various Golden owners' mail lists. A number of people have been dissatisfied with their Dyson's, some people love them, and I caught someone talking about getting a Miele. If you can get subscribed to a golden list, you might enjoy it. No, it just clumps up. At least it does with our washer and dryer. DH insists on cuddling with our American Eskimo every night- it's a sight to see, big tough guy curled up with a fluffy white dog. I have to vacuum the sheets and comforter before they go in the wash, and they're still never completely hair free.

I sent my Lab to the vet for a bath and groom for the first time this past December and it has made a huge difference in the amount of hair he is shedding! Pretty sure they used a shedding blade to take off at least 5 lbs. of fur. Certainly worth the $50 every so often when it gets rally bad.

The shedding blade does work wonders, though it gets so much hair off my dogs I really have to use it outside. Professional grooming is also a wonderful idea. Can you manage your dogs in the car? In this town have a "mobile groomer" that comes to your house with a van that's equipped for baths and such right on the spot.

Another idea - is there a pet sitter or dog walker service in your town? I've found these people to be pretty flexible when it comes to what they'll do for pet owners. You might be able to make arrangements for someone to come in once a week or so just to brush and use the shedding blade on the dogs and then sweep up the hair too.

Another idea is to get cheap roll of packing tape and use it for blotting up the hair. It will stick to it. Recently I saw a rolling thing on a long pole for rolling over the floor to pick up the hair. then you rinse it off in the sink (I'd use a good strainer in my sink for that)

The rolling thing doesn't work. One swipe and its covered and stops picking up. I tried it and returned to store.

I have two dogs, two cats and try my best to be a fastitious cleaner, but there will always be fur tumbleweeds at times. The Dyson vacuum has been the answer for me. It's expensive, but I found it easy to use and the fur is literally no match for it.

if its on furniture, use latex gloves to 'brush' the furniture. It really does work wonders
