my NEW Xmas purchase!!

I am so excited I can hardly stand it. LOL. Late last night, in boredom, I went prowling on Craigslist.

I decided to look thru "Collectibles". And I saw an ad for a huge Nutcracker....40 inches high, made of wood! For $25! Probably less than a third of his value! I quickly emailed, tho knew I wouldn't hear anything till today. Finally this afternoon, the man emailed me his phone number and said the Nutcracker was available. My darling DH drove across town (after golf, LOL) and picked up the Nutcracker for me.

I am so ecstatic to have one this size. He's heavy, solid wood.

What a great buy! I would love to have one or two that size. I used to buy a nutcracker each year for my son and daughter when they were growing up. So guess who has a huge collection of nutcrackers now? My daughter doesn't want hers. So much for starting a tradition. But I enjoy the memories that go with them. Again, great buy. I'll have to look at Craigslist more.

What a nice Santa he is, Karen-- (I'm still laughing at Jim's tax deduction comment...). 37 inches tall-- WOW-- now that's a lot of Santa per square inch for your money. :) I'm sorry to hear so many folks had to deal with Scrooges for Christmas... Why people can't manage to just suck it up and be NICE for a holiday-- ONE DAY-- but instead need to act out whatever issues they've had going for the rest of the year, well, I just don't understand it. But unfortunately it seems the way the holidays go. Me, I find I spend much of my time on holiday damage control, heading off moods. So I understand. :) --Jenn

Heck, as long as he can afford it, why not? I was talking to my ex-boss, now one of the regional Senior Execs (used to be called Office Managing Partners when I was there), and he told me he was so dissatisfied with the service he was getting since US Trust was taken over by BofA, he had pulled $500K out from his portfolio (fortunately before the market took a dive) and it was now just sitting in his savings account. LOL! He's a car addict, too, and also drives every exotic auto you can think of in a local car club. But personally he's faithful to his 9-yr old Porsche 911, which he bought for his 40th birthday and has loved ever since. His wife, a more sensible woman who has to drive the kids around to and from school, prefers the Acura MDX. OTOH, I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't succumb to the McMansion craze, and are still living in the same modest three bedroom house they were twenty years ago. If I was in TGG's place, I'd definitely prefer buying the Bentley to a Porsche. At the very least, it carries four people a lot more comfortably, hehehe.

I once had a very irate lady call our store chewing us out about the amount of smoke her new range made. Well, she had forgotten to remove the taped on bottle of oven cleaning cream that the manufacturer had supplied. So, I always ask if the cavity has been inspected well before being engaged in operation! So first make sure that you've removed all of the literature and supplies that came with the oven. That includes any tape and tape residue. Tape residue can produce some nasty smoke. Check your storage drawer or broiler drawer if that is how your range is configured. Then, make sure you've done the required burnoff that new ovens will need. That should be done before actually using it to cook with. It's a stinky process, but you have to heat the oven to 450Â° and keep it there for a couple of hours while any of the machine oil and grease burns off. You should be standing by to operate fans and open any windows while this process occurs. After you've done both of these things, run the self cleaning cycle (Make sure your racks are removed if they aren't also self cleanable. Most aren't.) Let your oven cool and wipe it out with soap and water.

Karen, you are so smart to be on the look out for Christmas decor sales in the post-season. What a deal! I love that your DH was thoughtful enough to drive over and get it for you (even if it did have to wait till after golf! LOL!) - that's kind of like a V's day present that he did that. Looking forward to seeing a pic of how you display him at Christmas.

I still can't believe I got this guy, and at that price!!
I don't check Craigs List that often, except maybe to scan the free stuff. And I've bought very little off it. Tho last year I got a wonderful marble-top round table and a console table with heavy ornate wood, both things I'd long wanted but didn't expect to find 'affordable'. I've never seen anything in Collectibles on CL that I wanted before.
Guess this was one of those "meant to be" things.
I just started collecting Nutcrackers last year, tho I had a token few little ones. I didn't even know they would appeal to me so much now. LOL. I like this King one, but I also like the soldiers as much. Some of my 11" ones are golfers, along with 2 golfer Santas...in honor of U Know Who! In Dec, at my favorite antique mall, one of the dealers had a 6 ft tall Nutcracker. I about had a fit seeing him. Boy did I want to bring that one home!! But he was $300. Way out of my budget. Tho out of curiosity, I looked the life-sized ones up on the Web and found they were usually around $700. So he was a good buy. He'd have looked great standing by my life-sized Carousel Horse in the livingroom. LOL.
As it is, I need to find a place to store this guy. He's in my bedroom closet at the moment. My Xmas closet is FULL, especially as I have the 36" Santa in there too. I can't wait to display the Santa and this Nutcracker together.
Is it Christmas yet????????? LOL

Karen, that really WAS a great deal you got! Where do you plan on displaying him, come Christmas? He'd look great on a covered front porch or in a foyer. I used to collect nutcrackers, too, but once I had an entire long window ledge full of them, I quit. I still enjoy the ones I have, though . . . including my two golfers ;^P

Wow, I think I'll start checking out collectibles on my craigs. That is one heck of a bargain and it's in fabulous condition.
