Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Place Settings

Thought I'd post these pictures as an extension to Duckie's question about tablescape use. As you can see, these place settings aren't ones that took lots of thought, but they are the typical ones I put together - "down and dirty" so to speak. More elaborate ones are a rarity and are done for special occasions or when guests are coming to lunch or dinner.

The theme tonight: Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Watching.

For "down and dirty" , it's awful pretty OA.
I like the check pattern on the placemats and napkins and it's balanced so well by the plate combination.
I'm getting obsessed with silverware/flatware as of late and I really like yours. Is it blue and white as well?

Love all your checks--especially on the flatware. Cute little soup bowls too. Eskimo pies sound very appropriate for this event! LOL

You have good wind blocks under that deck so that will help, Tammy. I get my burlap at Home Depot or Lowes usually but I think most garden centers carry it. You may have to ask them for it though. I literally beg, borrow and steal bags of leaves from all my neighbors in the fall! We have 5 big trees and I still need extra. I go out early on trash day and drag the bags over from my neighbor's lawns. Two of my neighbors now just bag their leaves and put them on my lawn instead of theirs, lol! But if leaves aren't available you can also use bagged bark mulch. It's way more expensive though. If you go that route make sure you bag it back up next spring to reuse. You could also use straw or hay. One of them has seeds, and I don't remember which, so you may get more weeds in the spring but they do work well as insulation. You want to wait until they are completely dormant before you put them in storage. And the ideal is to keep them completely dormant until you are past any freezing temps at night in the spring. The worst thing is for them to go through repeated freeze and thaws during the winter and especially the spring. The most roses I ever lost, 37, was during the big Easter freeze in April of 2007. I had just taken all the pots out of winter storage and they were all leafing out when the temps fell drastically for a weekend. Thankfully, Alan came up with a plan for the pots. He wheeled his tractor out of the shed and we put as many pots as we could in and he set up a couple of lamps with 100 watt bulbs in them for added warmth. I only lost 3 or 4 potted roses that we couldn't fit in the shed. All the rest of my losses were roses planted in the ground even though I had NOT yet taken off their winter protection! I don't recommend the cones for a couple of reasons. First, you have to really cut the rose back severely in the fall to get them on and I don't prune in the fall. You are going to get winter die back no matter what. If you cut them to 12 inches in October by April you'll be cutting them to 6 or less. Second, unless you cut the tops off for air circulation (which sort of destroys their integrity) they create the perfect breeding ground for fungus to grow. Particularly in the spring when conditions are very damp, the sun is getting higher up and days are longer and the temps are warming up. I understand that you disagree with me about raising up the pots, Michaelg. But I will stand by my opinion. It's not to protect them from freezing. I want them to freeze and STAY dormant until the temps will stay consistently above freezing. The freeze and thaw yo-yoing is deadly. It's for moisture retention. Desiccation kills them quickly too. That's why I water during the winter. They're asleep, not dead, and still require some water. How many of you have a glass of water on the table beside your bed because you get thirsty during the night? When I didn't put them up off the cement the pots would be bone dry with nice damp rings in the cement under them. And I lost roses. I do not raise them up where they are on the dirt. The dirt retains it's own moisture and does not pull water from the pots so it isn't a problem. BTW, I do winter my tree rose inside the shed, with the tractor, every year and have had no problems with the gasoline fumes affecting the rose.

How you feel about winning a particular medal is a relative thing. Going in to a competition expecting to win nothing, you would probably be elated to win Bronze. Going into the same competition expecting to take Gold and ending up with Bronze, that's a completely different feeling. Not that I'm excusing anyone, just that I can completely understand. It's human to feel disappointed when losing a hard fought game. On the other hand, do ya just LOVE Apolo Ohno? He got disqualified in that final round in the 500 meter when he could have won silver. I'm CERTAIN he was disappointed, and he made some remarks regarding the fact that he disagreed with the judges' decision, but he still smiled and said how he had no regrets and felt that he'd had a successful and satisfying time. And speaking of speed skating controversial decisions, the judge who disqualified the Chinese team in the women's relay received threats on his LIFE! How's that for sportsmanship? Ah well, it's over. It was great fun to watch. Congratulations to ALL the winners. Looking forward to the summer games in London in 2012.

I agree about asking your music people about what they recommend. Also, if you are getting married in a church, ask if there are any restrictions on the music which the church will make. I think too you are expecting entrances and such to take longer than they will. So you won't need all that many songs. General seating - determine about how many pews it will take to seat the groom's people, and how many the bride's. Divide that by two. The first rows of the groom's side ought to have groom's people. Then fill in the remaining with bride's. Or, don't worry about which side is which and just seat most people wherever. All in all it is dreary to see half the pews filled with the other half empty. Your proposed seating plan for grandmothers and step-grandmothers seems awkward at best. If it seems like it will work, great, but it probably wouldn't be my first instinct. I'd have candleabras lit well before the family candles. Candleabras are just set decoration, while family candles are symbolic and should be lit closer to the ceremony.

I'm looking forward to it -- we can sometimes get the Canadian coverage, which IMHO is much better, they show a lot of events without a lot of ads. I wish a US channel would just show what's on without all the extra. With the summer Olympics I remember jumping through hoops on the tv to see some event advertised, and when it came on, it was something like 15 minutes of highlights, and that was it! Not what we expected at all. For some events, I am very happy to watch it ALL. At the same time I agree with commenters saying "its boring" -- agreed! That is why I like some of it.

I really like your cloche stand.
Did it come together?

I have some antique blown glass cloches (3 sizes) and I'd love to find something like that to use with them.

OA, you've done it again! I love your "Sports Bar" area that you eat, watch TV, AND decorate so wonderfully. That's my kind of dining. LOL.
I know my DH would really enjoy something like this too, what man wouldn't tho!

Nice tablescape! Is this a family room...your tablescape on a bar? Love the decorated ledge shelf above the tv!

I like all your sports memoribilla that surrounds your TV.
The feeling of sitting at a sports bar, to enjoy a dinner and relax while watching TV, is just great.

Wonderful OA! The Olympics are being held in our province and I haven't even thot about a tablesetting yet you live in CA and have done one on opening day! I'm impressed! We've been hearing so much about it on TV for so long that it's almost getting tiresome. In fact lately we've been watching the news on CNN more than on any Canadian news channels! We're quite a distance from the coast so won't be attending - I think traffic will be crazy altho I've heard Vancouver has cleaned up very well and it would be fun to see!

I know I'm from the "frozen north" LOL but I had to google to find out what an Eskimo pie is! Dairy Queen has something similar as I've gotten them for the Grands but when we were kids we got Revels which I think are similar too. BTW Canada's northern first nations people are known as Inuit, not Eskimos.

Love your tall cloche and the colors are so pretty! Thanks, I've enjoyed it.

"Slam dunk" is more like it!!! It does look like a (very upscale) sports bar set up for watching the games, OA. What a great way to eat while you watch tv. We watched the event balancing dinner trays on our lap; yours is a much better way! Love the cool/icy feel of it all, but that's it's warm and cozy, too. Your cloche is wonderful! I really like the white filigree detailing of it's base. All in all, a terrific tablescape, as always! TFS.

That is so cute and creative! What a fun table! I love the blue and white..very crisp!
I see "our" PBarn flatware...I got green and another color too, I forget..It was such a bargain at the end of the summer, I couldn't resist.
And I love the little round tube it comes in..easier to store!
I like Klondike Bars too, do you have them?? Inuit Pies?
What a shame about that young man who was killed..very sad..

Oh thank you! Ya know, that's the sort of thing I really could do. Doesn't take much to make dinner festive. Just a little bit of thought and the gumption to do it.

Please keep posting your "down and dirty" set ups. They aren't as intimidating as the really good whole-nine-yards kind of tablescapes. That, for me anyway, makes them more inspirational in a practical sence.
