They did this on Home Dec., so since it is slow here thought it would be fun to see where we all live!

We aren't living in a drought state. We're next to a Great Lake! (We still have water restrictions for lawns.) Like Sushipup, we have a recirculating pump on our hot water line. It not only saves water, it's a luxurious convenience. We don't require daily showers or tub baths. We sponge bathe most evenings. We wash our hair a couple times a week. My jet tub is 'just my size' and fills adequately in a couple of minutes. My front load washer uses small amounts of water. The dishdrawer is right-size for two adults to run once a day and uses very little water. (No hand rinsing either.) Our underground sprinklers water only the front lawn and the immediate area around the house and some flower beds. The far back lawn gets rain...or not. Sprinklers water to 1" midnight to 5 a.m. once a week -- when we haven't had rain. Nine big flower pots are hand watered daily. If we have drought, we water even less lawn and soak our trees. We could conserve by adding rain barrels in the rear of the house. I'd like to replace the far back lawn with native plants. There's enough slope for water to run down from the barrels.

Windsor shares the same latitude as Northern California and the French Riviera. Hot and humid in the summer and cold and damp in the winter. I don't usually put my furnace on until November but gave in last week when the inside of my house dropped to 14.5C. I think it was warmer outside or at least it seemed to be. I shut my furnace off some time in April but we do have some cold days in May. Winters here sure aren't what they used to be. We get snowstorms and the snow is gone within a few days. I would rather have the snow stay on the ground than have slush all the time. We get much less snow than London or Toronto. My heating bills aren't outrageous for this drafty house. I pay $73 year round for natural gas using a 45 year old furnace and this year I had a 2 month credit because I paid more for energy than what I used. I use just a wall unit air conditioner and have only used it on really not and humid days. i would rather use fans. This summer we had extremely hot temps and my air conditioner was not working but I had 3 fans going all all times and I took ice packs to bed with me to keep cool. My electric energy usage rarely goes over 250kwh and I pay $101.00 every month year round. Not too bad. Living close to the river it seems cooler in the summer than elsewhere in Windsor and colder and damp in the winter. Stay in Canada when you retire and move to BC,where the weather is moderate. My brother and his wife left Windsor and moved to Squamish and they love it there.

The reason I don't LARGE face-on photos of family over the fireplace is it just seems like I am being stared at, lol! On the flip side, I covered my mantle at my old house with SMALL photos in ornate frames of friends and family members. Then a large picture/wood block print I loved in the center. I had wall mounted lights that looked like candle sconces on either side of my art, something you might consider., (either the lights or the sconce, well out of the way of little kid hands). That corner curio cabinet is GORGEOUS and I would put something on the mantel with a brown wood tone to tie in with the cabinet. Maybe a picture with a brown frame or some art with some color in it including brown. Or consider adding some colorful art or something on the wall kitty corner from the fireplace, so the room look a little more balanced. I don't see anything wrong with the sailboat photo, but then we are sailing people and love boats and the water and have spent considerable time thus engaged. If you're land-locked and have no association with boats, then it is a little contrived but will do until you find something that speaks to you. If it were me, and I had traveled the world, I would want pictures of that somehow. I have a large travel advertisement picture of a famous place I visited (Valley of the Ten Peaks in Canada, which is often used in Canadian tourism advertisements) which hung over my couch in the living room of my last house, and was surrounded by some other art pieces evoking the northern Rockies. Which made the space feel welcoming to me. Not saying you should copy me, but just sort of showing how you can develop a theme of stuff that reflects your live and loves in your "living" room.

My favorite of the ones you've chosen is your third island light. I like the sparkle you get with the metal and glass juxtaposed with the stone fireplace and wood floors. However, you might want to consider not doing clear glass in the kitchen. We have a fixture above our island with clear glass, and it gets dusty so quickly. And because it's in the kitchen, tiny bits of grease float up and then make the dust stick to it, so it's difficult to clean. I also think that your dining light can be a different style than your island/sink fixtures. (I think your first options are too matchy.) That would define the dining area. Here are some options I found that are reasonably priced. Sink: Island: even though it's glass, the top is solid to hide the dust. Dining: the white color ties in with your white cabinets. This company also sells chandelier shades so you could customize it with a color or pattern.

I am with patty cakes a state of confusion most of the time! I live in southren Ohio, close to ky and W.V borders, I call Ohio home but have lived all over the U.S.

Unlike Oddie, I have lived on L.I. all my life. I did go to college in Ohio, and grad school in Phila. So all these stores you mention are sometimes foreign, but if I ever see a Fred's or some of the others you mention in your travels and I will be sure to check out the bargains!!

The panhandle of Florida, but like Judith I have lived all over due to my husband being in the Navy. Best duty station was Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, second best, Honolulu, Hawaii.

I have lived in Wisconsin my whole life,hate the winter cold and snow ,but love the change of seasons. And right now I WANT A CHANGE OF SEASON.....

Sew, I hear you, no more cold, but we are bracing for snow right now. In the meantime, go make a stacking plate and post a pic! It will help you forget the weather!!

I'm in the southern part of Alabama, only a couple of hours away from the beaches.

Paintingfool, I bet I'm close to you! It only takes me about 1 1/2 hrs to get to Pensacola from my house.

I am ALWAYS in the state of confusion!!!!, but I decorate in Central Texas....I'm not from Texas, but got here as fast as I could after being a Navy brat and an XArmy wife!!!
