Hi Jim: Mas mentioned that she's applying silica ... known to strengthen cell-wall. I checked on potassium and disease-prevention, and found this in Wikipedia, "In agriculture, some cultivars are more efficient at K uptake due to genetic variations, and often these plants have increased disease resistance.[1] The mechanisms include a decreased cell permeability and decreased susceptibility to tissue penetration. Silica, which is accumulated in greater quantities when adequate potassium is present, is incorporated into cell walls, strengthening the epidermal layer which functions as a physical barrier to pathogens. Potassium has also been implicated to have a role in the proper thickening of cell walls." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_deficiency_(plants) **** From Straw: I notice that my disease-resistant roses: Basyes Blueberry, Excellenz von Schubert, Knock-outs, Kordes Flower Carpet, Annie L. McDowell, Marie Pavie, Bolero, Christopher Marlowe, Frederic Mistral, Old Port, Lilian Austin, and Nahema have THICKER LEAVES than flimsy Gruss an Teplitz' leaves. The disease-resistant own-roots are more efficient in getting potassium from the soil, than Dr. Huey's parent, Gruss an Teplitz. I notice that when I bring down the pH of my alkaline tap water through a bit of vinegar, ... the leaves of Sweet Promise rose became thinner, and more wilting in hot sun. So I checked on that, and a few University Extension mentioned that as the pH drops, levels of calcium and potassium are less available. There's the misconception that the pH has to be slightly acidic for roses to bloom best ... that's NOT true. The best tons-of-blooms in HMF are from sandy alkaline gardens, such as of Kitty Belendez in CA, she uses a soluble fertilizer mix, including kelp meal. Seaweed has alkaline clay soil, and she gets tons of blooms with soluble fertilizer. Alkaline soil pH doesn't matter, since plants can do acid-phosphatase (secreting acids to utilize phosphorus in soil). Dr. Huey root-stock is good in acid-phosphatase for blooming, but lousy in getting potassium from the soil. Here's an excerpt from eHow: "Potassium levels increase with higher pH levels, so acidic soils, which have lower pH levels, tend to have less potassium content than alkaline soils. According to professor Linda Chalker-Scott, potassium levels are particularly low in sandy acidic soils. Amending Your Soil: If your soil has low pH and potassium levels, you should apply lime to increase soil pH. For potassium-deficient soils that are not acidic, fertilizers such as potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash) may be more appropriate." *** From Straw: below is Annie L. LOL Lee...you 'caught' yourself!! I'm glad you picked up on my 'quilt' for guilt..! Actually I can cover myself up in that quilt... to hide my guilt!!! lol...couldn't resist. I collect all patterns of old B&W..If afforadable enough, I can't resist. I went to an auction years ago, and waited 9 hrs...to bid on a Box Lot of Platters...It paid off. They put it up towards the end, and most of the crowd was gone...and I won it for $35... One of those platters is well over $100. I point out to my DD...these are NOT just old junk dishes...so when I go, be aware..lol My passion started when my mother received a set as a housewarming gift from an aunt..I just loved them. When I got married...I started my quest. I bought a new set of Churchill (Chelsea) Blue Willow..and then J G Meaken Blue Onion. However, I did a real stupid thing, and sold them when I moved.. I had brain fatigue and was just getting rid of everything for the move. Even though we don't get too many people here either, I still find excuses to buy... (bad habits die hard) lol jane

I honestly do not know why you are worried about your dish drainer. It looks fine on your countertop, especially since your appliances are white. In fact, it looks like a lovely kitchen that is USED by actual people. Since when are we not allowed to live in our houses? The dishes in the top rack of my dishwasher are never dry, especially the plastic cups/sippy cups that are necessary with small children. I run the DW (almost) every night, transfer the wet items to the drainer in the morning, and put away the dry items when I return from work each day. When we have a party, I tuck my drainer under the sink. (But a nearby closet would work just as well.) If you decide to use a towel instead, remember to angle your pots/glasses/bowls to allow air to circulate to the inside. Otherwise, your pan will be dry on the outside and wet on the inside. (Sometimes I'll lay a wooden spoon under the first pan to lift it off the counter then lean all the other pans against it.) I use towels for overflow items, but the draining rack dries dishes faster.

I have a set of white porcelain that I love. I bought them piece-by-piece at Marshall's 20 years ago, and there isn't a chip on any of them. Food looks beautiful on white plates. I also have a mismatched set of colored plates and bowls - reds, purples, green, orange, yellow - that I set out deliberately to collect whenever I saw a piece or two on sale. I love to use those with certain meals. Both sets are mixed in my kitchen dish cupboard, and I pair every meal with the right color dish. Part of the fun of cooking is presentation for me, and I love setting a pretty table. I think you'll love having white dishes.

They are owned by BedBath&Beyond now, and I have been emailing them for years asking them to come to L.I. So if there are any lurkers out there from L.I., please email them and ask. They said it was a possibility...
In the meantime, I have my list made and have been nagging dh to take me. It is over 2 hours away, in an area I am totally unfam with, or I would be there tomorrow! I guess that is a good thing or I would need the POD to store all the stuff!

kathleen..there is one about an hour from me...I have never been to that store but I travel to that area ones a week for work...
I am very tempted to spend my lunch hour one day next week at that store...I love about everything in that flyer....lol

Tam, go if you can, it is a fun store!! It will lift your spirits..
I am on my way out the door now, but I had to encourage you to go if possible!!!! It is not a junky store, they really have some nice things.

Unfortunately I don't have one anywhere close to me.

I really like the black/white dishes and did ya'll see the black/white metal accessories? I can just see a floral arrangement in the largest one on a table with the black/white dishes. Bet that would be pretty!

That would be soo pretty, Dream! I will take pics if I go! I still have a gift certif they sent me. The last time I went I drove an hour to meet friends, then she drove the 2 hours to the store, lots of traffic. When I got home I realized they didn't put some things I paid for in my bag. I called them, and they wee so nice. Took the items off, and sent me a 25.00 cert for my trouble. Still have it, have to spend it!!

The Dish Police say NOT TODAY! I really tried, nag, nag, nag! Oh well, I may have to mosey to someplace closer and much more EXPENSIVE....bringing camera too , see if I can get the pic of the beau charger I talked about.
